Clicking 6 Slot board?

Hi,
I have a Neo Geo cab with a 6 slot board. All was working great until recently. Upon powering up I now get clicking instantly from the speakers and when the screen comes up I have garbled square blocks and the screen flicks in time to the clicks.

I also have a 4 slot board - this works fine.

I have checked the 6 slot board and apart from a couple of repairs to 2 video chip tracks I did a while back all appears fine. The repairs pin out as expected.

I have swapped the BIOS chips between the 2 boards. The 6 slot BIOS works fine in the 4 slot and the 4 slot BIOS in the 6 slot board does not alter anything - it still clicks and flicks.

Is this a dead 6 slot or can anyone offer any advice please?

Rgds and thanks

First thing you should do is take a 5v+ voltage reading..using a digi-voltage meter.
You may have a failing power supply.
.....and/or ...the power supply voltage may be just a tad to low...As I hear 6ers are power hungry...it may need to be raised a little.

One board may work(4 slot) ith the current power supply voltage and the other(6 slot) may not..

Thank you for the advice - I assume if I search I will find a pin out easily enough? If not Ill pop back and ask :)

Thanks

Right - found the pin out easy enough :)

My 4 slot I see 5.2 volts and my 6 slot I see 4.8 volts. Is this enough to cause a problem on the 6 slot?

I have a Neo Geo UK cab with a Hantarex US 250 power supply. I found the adjustment for +5v. It is set to its maximum and I can only lower the voltage.

Is it likely this is the issue, or could it be something else?

Many thanks

In all my experience... of being here,4.8 volts is to low to run a 6 slot....should be 5V or just above it..

Thanks for the reply. Assuming this is the issue I need to replace the power supply. Do I replace it with another Hantarex (assuming available) or do I go with something a little more modern? If the later can anyone suggest a replacement please.

6 Slot Needs shiloads of power.

Anywyas,

I'd replace your failing powersupply ASAP....

It could fuck some shit up.

Someone here lost like 4 boards including an ATW board

Yup - will replace it. Im not too hot on power supplies. I need to replace a Hantarex US 250. If people could suggest a replacement that would be a great help :)

Is that at the mvs/jamma edge connect or the psu ? remember there will be voltage dropped in the harness. 4.8 at the PSU may turn out to be only 4.5 at the board :spock: Set it to be a whisker over 5.0 at the board, that may fix your problem.

That is 4.7-4.8 at the edge connector. I cannot set the voltage to be any higher as the Hantarex is set at its maximum already. Hence asking for advice on a replacement PSU for my cab :)

Those Hantarex US 250/350 monitors have an integrated psu for both the monitor +B rail and the boardset 5 and 12 volts. (rated at 5V/10 amps)

So you will have to keep running it for the main monitor board along with any new psu you install, unless you intend replacing the monitor as well.

You need something like this.

switcher-new.jpg

It has a pot for adjusting the 5 volt rail, as does your Hantarex psu.( actually its a +5 volt current limiter in the Hant, which effectively adjusts the voltage dependant on load)

Let me know if you need the schematic for the US 250/350 psu, I did link to it a while back in another thread relating to these psus but its down at the moment.

You hear clicking sounds, that strange because there is nothing mechanical on a mvs board not even a fan. The sound you are hearing has to be coming from the audio output which would suggest something wrong with the +12 line.

Ah right think I understand - the PSU is doing the monitor and the board power? If I replace with another PSU I keep the Hantrex PSU and use the new PSU to power only the board?

I would like the schematics for the US 250 please :)

I may have found a new Hantrex 250 in Germany, Im waiting to hear!

Thanks

I agree - it is an electronically induced noise and the screen flicks in time to the click I hear from the speakers.

So there video problems too, that would also indicate a problem with the +5 line . That power supply is screwed most likely as everyone has suggested, have you switched it out yet. Arcade power supplies are cheap even when bought new. 6 slots are greedy mothers power wise, I have one and heats up my arcade power supply to the point where I had to install 2 fans on it.

I have not switched out the PSU but I put my 4 slot in and it works fine!

4 slots don't suck nearly as much power as a 6 slot.

The clicking is NOT a 12 volt line problem OR a power supply issue.

The CPU is not functioning, so the watchdog timer keeps on firing continiously, resetting the board. This means there is a problem in the data or addrewss busses, something to keep the program from running correctly.

Sounds serious? Is the board dead then?
