I FINALLY got a Killer Insinct Board from another member on here and wanted to know some stuff because right now I don't have a hard drive to fully try it out. when I boot up the board the only thing that comes up on the screen is black and white horizontal lines and there's no way to get past that, is that a normal thing without the HD?! I also notice right away that the "D. drive active" Led comes on...and then a few seconds later I hear a noise then the "sound active" led comes on.

i'm also concerned because in the top right corner it looks like there is a rom missing, and I saw a picture of another v4.0 board and it had the rom on the board.

is there any way to tell if the board will work without having the hard drive!?

You are missing a critical ROM actually. The missing one is the boot program, which also contains the entire game program. The game will not work without that ROM. I can't remember if the game will do anything without the hard drive if the boot ROM is present though. I haven't tested that on my KI2 board.

The "dong" noise is the ADSP2105 CPU booting and saying that it's working. The program for the ADSP is one of the 8 ROMs on the left.

Thank you so much for that info! I almost just up and bought a hard drive because nobody I asked before this was able to tell me anything that I wanted to know. many MANY thanks !

Just for your information, the large chip that has the number "R4600" stamped on it is the main CPU(a MIPS R4600 at 100MHz). It gets pretty warm while the game runs, and is supposed to have a heatsink attached to it. If you get a new boot ROM you should get a heatsink and thermal compound to put on it.

And come to think of it, with the boot ROM installed and no HD present I think the game shows a black screen and then fills it with either a red/blue screen. I believe you can enter test mode with no HD installed.

i have the full KI2 pcb and hard drive set
i am having the same problem.
my problem is it use to work as of last night.
it was acting a little odd i would keep getting a blue screen every few cycles during the opening demo.
i never noticed this blue screen fill in effect before.
after a few power cycles i would only get white horizontal bars.
both sound active and d-drive active leds come on. i get a deep beep tone.

so i started to push down on the connector by the hard drive thinking that the connector was loose.
then I would get the blue followed by a red fill in screen effect and the game would start sone as i let go the game would lockup. at some point the chip k12-U1 under the ribbon cable pcb got real hot. i also realized i was missing the heat sink on top of the 79r4600-100ms chip. maybe that is why things got so hot. i now have the heat sink back on. hope its not too late.

after that i only get the white bars or a slowing filling blue screen if i push down on the main pcb board by the reset button.
the original hard drive will not spin/rev up when i power up the pcb.
if i put a different hard drive in it will spin/rev up the sec i turn it on.
my pc can not detect the original KI2 hard drive.
i am starting to think that ki2s hard drive just went bad. its odd that it just stopped spinning.
i never seen a drive fail like that they always spin and just click a lot when they start to fail.

i cant find any real solid info on replacing the hard drive on google and only a few hints on this forum.
are there any sites or guides on how to replace the hard drive in games like KI2.
