I imported this game because I am a huge Dig Dug/Mr. Driller fan. I was going to wait for the USA release that is only a couple of weeks but decided to get it early.

The Japanese in the game is fairly limited. There is a bit of a story but nothing big.

The graphics are okay but nothing to get excited about. I would list the graphics as GBA quality.

The controls are pretty bad. This is the type of game where you need to make precise direction changes and there are plenty of times when the controls aren't there when you need them. Several times I have pushed left only to go up and so on.

The sound/music is sub par. At first I thought the music was glitchy. There are two types of sound going on though. There is the back ground noise and then when you are pushing a direction there is music being played. The problem is that the music stops or cuts out when you are not pushing a direction. That was a weird choice to make as it makes the sound appear to be unfinished.

The top screen is put to use in this game. You are digging on the bottom screen and need to drop pillars (by digging under them) that will cause the land to break off into the water. If you time it right you can trap the boss in an area that will fall off into the water, thus completing the level. You need the top screen to see where the boss is and to plan your move. There is a huge variety of monsters on the bottom screen as well as a lot of power ups.

The Stylus is not really used. It can be used for menu navigation and a mini game for extra lives at the end of a level but clearly that was just added on with no real purpose.

This game has two save slots and auto saves at the end of every level. There appears to be a lot of levels. I have only played ten levels at that took a little over an hour.

This game does offer a two player mode but you will need two copies of the game. I was hoping that Namco would make the Japanese version single cart/multi-player, like they did with Mr. Driller but they did not.

I have not really played it enough to give it a fair review. However, although the controls are wonky and the music is glitchy, it is a fairly addictive game. The puzzles get harder as the levels progress but sometimes they are harder than they need to be because of the controls.

6/10

Same for me. I buy just about everything that comes out. I now have over thirty games and a good number of imports.

Regarding Dig Dug DS, I hope they fix the controls and music prior to the USA release. However, since the release is only a couple weeks away, I doubt there will be a difference. I also would like to see single cart/multi-player added but I know that is not going to happen.

Oh well, I'm buying this regardless! Most reviewers gave Mr Driller DS a 6 or 7 out of ten and I still really enjoyed it.
I'm all over Namco puzzle-type games.

I didn't post to turn people away from the game. I just don't think it would be worth the money to import. I import a lot and always have trouble finding out information about the games I want prior to buying them.

I also loved Mr. Driller. I owned two copies of the USA version but ended up buying the Japanese version for the single cart, 5 player mode.

Not to totally derail this topic, but how much better is the JAP/EU version of Mr Driller?
I was kinda irked that they left out several modes and at least one character in the NA version.

Have you ever actually played Dig Dug before? Its always been that way.

I was about to say the same thing. The music isn't glitchy, but they chose to use the original Dig Dug method of playing music. And as Nesagwa said, the original Dig Dug only played the music while you moved.

I have played the original but that was years ago. The problem is that it makes a crackle (glitchy) type sound(s) when it switches between the two. It really comes across as a defective type sound. I don't remember that in the original.

Regardless, this is a new game for a new system. I am a huge DS/Namco fan but the controls and sound should have been fixed prior to release.

If any of you guys pick up the USA version let me know what you think of the controls and sound. If there is an improvement, maybe I will pick that up as well.

As for the Mr. Driller question. The reason I picked up the Japanese version was for the single cart/5 player multi-player mode. There is also an extra mode that was not in the USA version. Sorry but I don't know about the extra characters.

Wow. Looks like they're keeping with their similar pattern in always removing 1 single feature from the Japanese version from the US version, even though the US version comes later. This happened in Mr. Driller "Drill Spirits" as well.

I have no idea why they do that, though I guess the core 'advertised' game mode is what I was really set on buying. I'm really eager for a new Dig Dug, and this looks like a good legitimate followup to Dig Dug and Dig Dug Arrangement. I also hope the controls are supped up for the US release. Still, I was set on getting this just like I'm set on getting the new Gauntlet since I'm also still a diehard Gauntlet fan.

Sorry...it is early in the morning so maybe I was not clear. I was talking only about Mr. Driller at the last part of my previous post. Dig Dug DS is a two player game but requires that both people have a cart. (No single cart/multi-player play)
I imported Dig Dug thinking that Namco might include a single cart/multi-player mode (like the Japanese version of Mr. Driller) but they did not.

I am also looking forward to the new Gauntlet as I will be picking it up for the Xbox when it is released.
