Sounds interesting. I've been interested in getting a new space invaders game for some time now. However, I haven't gotten any since the original, personally.

I played one space invaders, in the arcade, which sort of was a new late 80s update to the game. It absolutely rocked, and included certain sections which felt like vertical scrolling shooters, had a ton of new aliens to fight, powerups, and everything. I forgot the exact name of it, though. If this DS Invaders is anything like that, it'll be a must-have shooter to add to my collection.

UPDATE: I found out, the game was called Super Space Invader's '91. Made in 1990, of all things. It was also called Majestic Twelve. Now THAT'S the Space Invaders I really want. However, it seems this DS version isn't getting much in reviews.

I think that version was on the PSP Space Invaders game.

I didn't know this up until recently, but the Retro Atari DS game that came out a few months ago has Lunar Lander! There is also a compliation cart for the GBA that includes it too. Lunar Lander happens to be one of my favorite arcade cabinets of all time. I'm not really too sure where I'm going with this, I just thought you guys might like to know...

If we wait a month Space Invaders will be in the bargin bin. I'll buy it for that. :kekeke:

So I bought this one...unless you are a diehard Space Invaders fan...skip it.

The Stylus Control is gimmicky and not as responsive as using the buttons and the "remix" mode isn't all that inventive.

More later after I put in some time with it.

Space Invaders is at a pretty low price to start, 19.99. I had considered importing it but had read that it was not very good. I may pick it up at some point though.

Okay so I've played this one a little bit more now and can give a better impression on it.

Graphics: Its Space Invaders...don't look for anything great here. The Classic mode is 1978 vintage pixels and the Remix isn't much better. But Space Invaders really isn't about graphics anyway.

Sound: Classic blips and bloops in the original flava. Pretty decent music in the remix where each location on the map has music that thematically matches the geographical area.

Gameplay: Stylus play is atrocious. While you *can* tap the screen to make your ship fire its weapon, it is ackward at best. The Stylus is a little bit more functional in the Remix mode where you can select your power-ups to use. You can alternatively use the shoulder buttons to acomplish the same motion...something I wish you could have done in Nanostray. Using the buttons and D-Pad is the way to go and plays just fine.

Replay: The Remix mode offers different "themed" worlds where the invaders have different characteristics such as having to shoot them in a specific order or having one large multi-pixel invader to chip away at. I believe there are only 20 of these worlds (each with three levels) and after one evening of playing I am through about 15 worlds. I don't anticipate this one lasting too much longer

Additionally you can play the classic mode or the special levels in the remix mode to accumulate points to unlock the special abilities in the remix levels. These are actually prety cool, however, there is a power meter and using too many power-ups simultaneously will result in one or two bursts of your buffed up ship before returning to normal. A little strategy can be employed in determining which power-up is the best for dealing with a specific level. (ie: The laser weapon is great for destroying a whole column at once in the multi-pixel mega invader levels).

I was at first very dissapointed with the game, but after playing it for a bit it has moved up from horrible to merely mediocre. It's a cheap DS game (19.99) by a small publisher (Mastiff) so I recommend snagging this one up if you are a hardcore collector or a Space Invaders zealot since it may not have a long shelf life. For everyone else, however, this title will probably dissapoint. A lot more Invaders (such as Space Invaders '88) could have been packed into this game to make it a more robust offering

Thanks for the impressions. It's a $20 game, but I guess I've been spoiled with certain extremely good values for $20. (Like the Megaman collection, etc.)

But, it is cheap and among the cheapest of portable games, out there. The only thing cheaper, and perhaps of greater value, is the Bubble Bobble Old and New, which I'm also tempted to pick up given it's a great Taito classic.

However, it sounds like this one may have enough to drop 20 bones on it, for some good vintage portable Space Invaders. Plus I don't want to be one to skip out on something that might dissappear quickly. I already had that happen to me with Elevator Action returns (though it looks like I'll have another chance to get it without spending a mint).

I don't think I've ever seen Space Invaders '88. I'll have to look into that one.

I think I might be confusing Space Invaders 91 with Galaga 88 actually. :)

So one day later...after logging about 5-6 hours with Space Invaders Revolution...I have unlocked everything and beat the game.

Worth 20 bucks for the experience...not really.

Am I disappointed in the purchase...nope. Supporting small independent publishers that bring out niche games is certainly worth a Jackson.

Thanks for the impressions. I went ahead and ordered it. I am glad to hear that it is rather short as I have way too many games to play right now.

Once you beat the game, was there anything left to do? Play for high score ect?

Yeah the game does track your high score in Classic Mode, so theoretically you can play that as often as you want and try to top yourself. You also have the accessibility to go back and play and of the Remix levels once you've beat them..so you got that too.

Well, I have put a couple hours into the game and have a couple levels left to play. I think what you said about the game was right on. I think the game is worth $20, as I have had a lot of fun with it.

I wish they would have done more for the updated version in terms of graphics. The game has that space ship scene prior to the start of every level. I would have rather they spent the time on cooler graphics. A two player co-op mode would have also been a nice fit for the new version.

That being said, it is hard to not like this game. The price is low and there is a level of quality about it.

Review at IGN (overall rating 5.0 out of 10):

http://ds.ign.com/articles/646/646799p1.html

But did it need to be on the Nintendo DS platform? There's really nothing going on in this game that couldn't have been done on lesser hardware. Touch screen control is limited to tapping one of the six different power-ups that become unlocked after earning a set amount of points in the classic arcade mode…controls that are duplicated with the shoulder buttons. The game limits its visual appeal to a slight background enhancement to the original arcade game, and outside of a continuously recycled 3D cut scene between levels, this is strictly a 2D game experience. So the short end of it is no, it really doesn't need to be on the DS, nor does it push any "cool" DS functionality. There isn't even any multiplayer option in the game.

Closing Comments

Space Invaders Revolution has a bit of old-school charm, but the developers barely take the game to new levels. The original game's creator is clearly proud of his classic game, because this updated take barely moves into new territory. It's still a kick to play the original as well as a somewhat updated take on the classic theme that doesn't go all wild with ideas that stray from the original theme. But that's its downside: it's not very creative. And past Space Invaders games on current consoles and handhelds have done a much better job with contemporizing a true arcade classic.

Every Space Invaders game I have ever played has been exactly the same.

There just isnt much to Space Invaders anymore, no matter how you try and pretty it up.

Thanks Chimp. It would not be a DS topic with the resident retard (you) making a post.

All I did was post the review. The resident retard is actually you, who will buy any piece of shit put out, in your eternal desperation to find a decent game. :kekeke:

5.0 on a scale of 10? Dude, wake up, that IS shit. Its sad how you buy everything that comes out, always hoping to find a decent game, then try to find something good to say about all of them. Keep on tryin' . . . :kekeke:

What is sad is a guy who continues to post about games he has never played on a system he admits he does not own or like.

Maybe I missed something, did you pick up a DS? Do you own this game or have you played it? Did you post the review score of Advance War, Kirby or Nintendogs in their topics? If not shut the fuck up you poor excuse for a gamer.

Every time you post you make a retard cry. :oh_no:

A) All I did was post a review with no comments, and you got your panties all in a bunch, like a whining baby. I guess thats your problem, eh?

B) No I don't own a DS.

C) No I don't own this game, again I just posted a review and you got all pissy like a baby.

D) Did I post reviews of AW, Kirby, or Nintendogs? No. What does that have to do with it?

E) You shut the fuck up, asshole. You're the one who started the flames, not me.

Every time you post, you make it more obvious that you'll buy any mediocre game just because you're so desperate to find something half decent on the DS. Then you'll talk the game up no matter how bad it is, in a vain attempt to make your purchase seem more acceptable. Then if anyone posts ANYTHING remotely negative about the crap you bought, even just a review from another site, you attack them as if they criticized you (hello, no one said anything about YOU idiot, so STFU with your witless comebacks). Sad indeed . . . :chump:

Oh and for your last point, it really is quite true . . . every time I post, YOU cry, so I guess you're that retard! :kekeke:

Well looking at your incredibly weak comebacks, I can see your arguments fell through . . . no point in going on from here. Have fun with all those great games! :chump: :kekeke:

True, chimp does only post reviews when it reinforces his point, but at least he left it at that.
