Would a VGA monitor be good for supergun use?

I have a friend who is selling a rather large, 30”, old VGA HD monitor. I was wondering how hard it would be to get the RGB signal to VGA, and how much quality it would loose in the process.

Unless the VGA monitor can sync down to 15 khz, you'd need an upscan converter like a XRGB, which are roughly $200. As for the signal loss, I can't tell you, since I don't know.

Would it be possible to avoid the XRGB converter if using the Neobitz Component converter then putting it out to VGA with something like this?

I'm not familiar with the Neobitz converter, but if it only outputs component, I don't think it would look as good as using something that puts out S-Video...

I do believe you are thinking about "composite", component separates the signals into Y pb pr where as S-Video simply separates the color from the black. S-Video is superior to composite but not superior to component. Composite crams all video into one signal causing horrible bleeding. RGB component or T pr pb component is the best possible if I'm up to date. However, Neobitz has component, composite and s-vido outputs.

Do to how expensive component TV’s are in the states I’m trying to find some low bleeding solution that won’t burn a hole in my pocket. What I’m wondering is do I still need a XRGB converter if I’m using a Neobitz converter and then converting that component signal into VGA. It seems like it might work considering Neobitz makes JAMMA / MVS work with a normal TV it might work with a VGA monitor.

You are going to have to get an X-RGB 2 if you want to have a good video signal. Most of the upscan convertors that are cheaper will give you an ugly signal. So $200 is worth it. It will work on any system with an RGB output. So that means you get RGB on almost all systems ever made except for the NES and older systems. It is actually a better option than buying a NeoBitz and a TV with component.

The NeoBitz won't help at all for VGA since it is still in NTSC interlaced format. I just say get the monitor and buy the XRGB 2. Also the Dreamcast you can buy a VGA convertor that is made for computer monitors and works the best for that system. Also the X-RGB 2 can take S-video or composite (For composite I think you just gotta get a composite to S-video adaptor cheap at radio shack. It doesn't improve the picture into S-video quality but it work for things that don't support any higher than composite.)

I was wondering...what do I need to play PS2 and saturn games on my pc monitor (VGA). I've seen a few of those VGA boxes, but are those high quality?

the neobitz is $115, that component to vga cable is $70... you're talking about doing alot of extra hassle for $15.

I have seen some standard S-video to VGA convertor boxes that work ok for newer consoles but sucks on Neo Geo resolution. Still, you only get a sharper S-video picture than a TV but still doesn't compare to RGB or Component. I still think the XRGB 2 is just worth the money compare to the mixed results you can get with other upscan convertors. The one I got is called Jamm! and uses S-video in only, I bought it years ago for $60 in 1998 or so.

I already have every console running through RGB on my TV, but my pc monitor can turn 90 degrees, so it's perfect for tate gaming in shooters.

How would the VGA qality be compared to RGB?

If you use a VGA with an XRGB 2 it will look most likely look the same quality. It might have a sharper picture than a RGB TV just because a VGA has no scanlines.

Too bad those things are so expensive...for that price it would have to be perfect quality.

Check out this website for very informative video tech stuff:

http://www.gamesx.com/index2.htm

The best info on the XRGB 2 I have seen yet (Look at Misc Tech list). Also check out this site that is part of the same guys that run it.

http://nfg.2y.net/games/

Look at the X-select D4 (in Hard Data list) which makes it so you can use component and other stuff to work with the XRGB 2.
