hi,
I had my AES shipped cross country fedex, and when i unpacked it and tried it out, all I got was a black and white picture. The games work fine, and the sounds work fine, there just isnt any color anymore. MD3 is near impossible to play without color! Anyways, I was wondering if you all could offer any hints as to the problem here. Im pretty sure im seating the carts right, and everything is plugged in ok. It happens with multiple games as well.

Thanks

All I can say is open her up and see if any of the capacitors or resistors have broken away from the board. If so, solder them back in. Otherwise you might want to have JMKurtz look at it. He's the best.

could be a european system. PAL output on some NTSC TV's is a normal picture, but it's black and white. NTSC on PAL also is B&W. THis is because the frequencies for color information are not compatible. You should be able to convert it.

cheers,

Did you purchase this from overseas? Or have you used this system before and it was in color and something has happened to it?

If you just purchased it and this is the first time using it, I would have to guess at it being a PAL system and you will need to convert it to NTSC. It's a pretty simple process (change a jumper and the crystal).

used it before for a year or so, and no problem. All of the KoF games, MD3, RotD... etc worked fine on it. I moved and had it shipped to my new place, and now, no more color.

What cable are you using to connect the NeoGeo to the TV?
Are you sure the TV and the cable are ok?

the plain old mono audio/video rca cable thing that came with it, same one i used before, and it doesnt outwardly look to have been damaged.

Can you try something else with the same type of connection to your TV and see if it displays color?
On my TV S-Video and Composite do share the same line for luminance, so if I connect something to the Video (RCA) plug but I select the Input as S-Video I don't get color.

God I hate RCA TV's, especially the Home Theatre or Colortrack Plus. My 1995 Colortrack plus 20" - Everytime I hook to S-video and a screen flashes you lose the signal for a split second, really anoying on Neo Geo games that flash almost every second. You had to use the same channel 00 for the S-video and composite RCA. So it cuts to composite when S-video loses its signal even for a split second and then goes back to S-video.

Anyway, it sounds like to me that either your systems CXA1145 is going retarded or the RGB lines aren't making a connection with the CXA chip. It also could be the chromanace part of the CXA's line out.

If you have use it before and it is fine, open up your system, near the CXA chip and the crystal is a variable capacitor. Use a flat driver (plastic preferred) and turn it slightly. You can do it with the system connected and switch on.

The 50p thing right? That is just to adjust the frequency so the dotcrawl and rainbowing effect can be adjusted.

Just remember exactly where it was set to originally. Best thing to do is take a sharpie and make a mark on the screw and on the outerpart of it.

Its part of the Crystal Oscillator circuit to provide "proper timing" to the video chip. Incorrect = No color

Any luck with the system? I remember a friend of mines SNES doing the same thing after he moved it. This is wierd, I wonder if it is just simply a bad connection? Sometimes the heavy vibrations from moving things can easily loosen something that is already loose.

Oh well try everything you can, if nothing works send it to good ole Jeff Kurtz. He is a great guy, helped me out a lot.

Finally had enough free time to try this.

There was a little thing that looked like a metal screw head recessed in something covered in orange foamlike stuff, it had a 20P marking next to it, i gave it a full turn each way and it didnt seem to do anything, and I didnt see any other variable caps, and didnt see with a quick pass any broken off capacitors/resistors either.

Probally a bad CXA1145 chip. It can easily be replaced. I am sure tons of people have some extra chips sitting around in the forum. Many that did the RGB bypass mod will have taken those out. Also dead systems will have them inside. You could always take one out of the Genesis 1 model, but there seem to be two versions, the p and m. The m definitely won't work which is what my Genesis uses, way too small.

If you know how to solder then it will be a cinch. If not, I say learn now, its easy once you get the hang of how it works. You might want to practice on something first and look at a faq for soldering on the net.
