I have a MV1FZ that was working great then whilst playing a game I heard crackle crackle hiss hiss and then no sound at all, game kept on playing. Re booted and now displays Z80 error. Put in a UniBios and I can still play games, but have no sound. Checked board everything is clean, no broken traces, no wiring problems, tried different cart's etc. This model board has no Z80 so can't replace it, located 2x faulty SMD resistors near the sound chip replaced these, still no sound. Any idea's?

The 1FZ DOES have a Z80 , its just not packaged in a DIL like most peeps are used to seeing.

The Z80 on most 1FZ is labled 84C00AM and is just below IC3 (The YM2610) and next to the SM1 MASK4 rom. You could try replacing this if your ok working with SMD's but i'd give replacing the Z80 ram a shot first. This is a standard DIL package labled RAM11 and is a BR6216A , if stuck a 6116 should also be a suitable replacement.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll go with the RAM option first. Just in case where's a good place to get the 84C00 from?

Last time i was in Oz the only tronics place i ever saw was Jaycar but they only seem to sell to your average Bruce on the street.

To be honest , youd be as well contacting Zilog direct and requesting a few samples , either them or one of their main distributors .. heres the link to ones in your neck of the woods.

Replaced the RAM, get the same error. Yes the OZ electronic stores suck, that's why I tend to get all my stuff from OS.
