alright so about a month ago I won a Power Instinct pcb from someone off ebay, and the guy said it was working 100% but turns out I got scammed along with some other people...anyways..the other day I was looking it over and saw some almost invisible to the naked eyes wires connecting some of the roms together...just wondering what you think those were for...the only reason i've ever heard of wires being on a board was because it was a boot. And I can't really show you the wires because I got pissed the other day and ripped em off.

This is where the wires were tho

and just for the record it has never worked, everytime I turn it on it's just a black screen..but i did get sound like twice but then that stopped working for some reason.

It's very possible the wires were there because it's a bootleg, but my Frogger PCB has jumper wires on it and as far as I know, it's a legitimate factory mod. I've used wires on PCB's before to fix broken traces.

Having wires on original PCB's isn't uncommon. Frequently flaws are found in the original design, and boards must have rework wiring installed on all of them until a newer revision of the bare PCB is made with the fix applied to the printed circuit.

When I worked at Hitachi we made ultra high end RAID server PCB's and when bugs were found on those they usually required lots of complicated rework.

And as mentioned, wires are used alot to repair broken traces caused by scratches or burns. I had to fix a I/O board for a redemption game once that had an entire section of traces burned off from a bad transistor. I had to study the schematic alot to figure out what wires had to connect what.

ditto to above thoughts, jumper wires are alright, it's just when they're coupled with EEPROMs that you should be concerned

No maybe's about it. That PCB is a definate 100% bootleg.

The distinct lack of any custom IC's is usually the big give away. The wires will have been to patch up some screwup they found after blowing tons of OTP roms for that daughter board you pointed out.

It does look like a bootleg, do we have a piccy of a ridgy didgy original to compare.

From my experience the bootleg layouts look nothing like the original board set (exception being my 1943) afaik

Its also unusual for a bootleg boardset to flaunt the original manufactures Atlus logo, screen printed, as in this case. Having said that, there seems to be no other board reference markings.

The Hyundai programmables tend to suggest boot ? Most of the boots I have of that era use Hyundai

I don't have any pics before I ripped those wires out..and I can't even find a pic of what an origional board should look like..but if the hyundai roms are a good sign that teh board is a boot well then that pretty much takes the cake right there cause the entire board is almost Hyndai and Goldstar roms....and even if those wires were there to fix some broken traces they didn't do a very good job anyways cause that dumb ass board has never even came up with so much as a picture.

Hmm, are there any other labels or printing on the board? Usually bootleggers don't put the name of the company they rip off on the silkscreen.

However, while looking through the MAME source, I found this, describing the layout of a bootleg Power Instinct board

Code:

That MAME source looks almost exactly like the board he has. Wow, that board's a boot for sure.

To be honest I kinda doubt the originality of any of the Power Instinct boards on

http://arcadecollecting.xmission.com/pcbpics/f135.html

or Crazy Kong for that matter.

I got a dead set original from 300wins and its layout is WAY different than any of them. None of those PCB's have the surface mount custom chips that the original has and they seem to have those big raised socketted square chips (Altera made often) which the original lacks.

Here's a pic of mine -

PowerInstinctoringinal.jpg

Either that or there's a bunch of quite varied revisions out there...doubtfull though.

You should get that dumped, as MAME does not have a dump of an original Power Instinct 1, only bootlegs.
