Will CPS 3 Boards ever be Phoenixed up?

I was just wondering about this...

I mean... I'd love to play some of the new CPS 3 games... like Jojo's ... SF 3... etc etc..

But the suicide batteries scare me.... Thats why I like a nice phoenixed rom in my CPS 2 boards... even tho its a LOT easier to change a CPS 2 suicide battery than a CPS 3 one..

I wonder what are the possibilities of breaking the CPS 3 encryption and eventually getting the roms phoenixed up....

I'd certainly like to help... if i could... but I assume it'll be up to the tech lords ... like Raz and some others to try this...

What say you to get a movement together to try and get this done? :buttrock:

RAZ for PREZ! :D

Suicide Shmuicide. I've never had a CPS2 or CPS3 board die in my life.

Lucky you, but there's people who have. I must admit I haven't either, but I've never owned CPS3, only CPS2. Like Rot I'm too scared of CPS3, and it looks like a very complicated system to use and with only 6 games, from which I would only like to play one which is already available in good ports to 3 different systems.

Anyway I'm not sure, but I don't see CPS3 boards been revived in a long time. Maybe Raz can enlighte us a bit.

I would say its possible once the encryption is known. I would even go as far as to say that it would be possible to play all games with one phoenixed cart by loading up different games from CD as needed.

Whoa, sounds interesting, thanks. If this ever happens I might give a try to CPS3. Anyway that encryptation looks like a total bitch. Shame I'm a mathematician but didn't specialize on crypthology, otherwise I would give it a go :emb:

It would be much easier to wait for the mame people to emulate CPS3 first, then you will be able to find unencrypted versions of the games.

I hate to say it, but emulation has it's legitimate uses. If it weren't for projects like mame, I doubt if as many old sega games and such would be running unencrypted now, and w/ out suicide batteries.

The hard part about putting all the games on one disc would probably be making the cartridge part.

cheers,

How hard is it to replace the battery on a CPS3 with the board turned on? I really want to get a CPS3 setup but the battery of Death really freaks me out!

If you are good with a soldering iron you can do it no problem. This hardware isn't going to explode in your hands like popular belief, it just needs to be handled carefully like any other PCB.

I have changed 3 batteries and they were a first for me (I've never even done CPS2). It depends though, the later games (3rd Strike and JoJo's) do NOT have a ground wire attached to the negative lead on the battery. Warzard and the other Street Fighters DO and if this wire is removed, the cart will die. It still isn't that hard IMO, just cut the leg of the battery and solder a wire between your new one and the old lead.

Read both of these...

As you see there is another method to do it with a "helper" battery, but I just did all of mine while the system was on.

With the "three wire" cart setup, if the black wire comes off while the cart is on, will the cart die? Is the "helper" battery method just for replacing the battery while the cart is out of the CPS3 motherboard?

Also, I am trying to find a great scan of the CPS3 manual. Anybody know any good sites for arcade manuals?

Now that would kick total ass! :buttrock: I have a CPS3 and can not live without my Street Fighter 3! Ports dont do it for me.

I have a JP CPS3 manual and there is an English one online, what do you need it for? They don't provide much information.

If the black wire comes off then the cart will die. The helper battery is indeed just another method (they say easier) that you can do to replace the battery instead of having the system powered on.

If you want to play emulated CPS3 in your PC, use the dreamcast emulator and STFU.

mmm... spam...
to be quite honest, I'd actually prefer it if they didn't hack cps3 for mame... it's one thing to hack apart a game to fix it, it's a completelly different thing to hack apart a game to mass distribute it without paying the people who made it.

I have a DC emulator and all CPS3 games i'd rather play on mame thought becuase i'm sure there won't be dead pixels and shit on mame. the dc emulators aren't that good! now get back to the regular topic as i said and get off my dick!

Well, you can't do one thing without the other unless the unencrypted roms are kept secret or something. And personally I don't see the problem in emulating such an "old" and basically death hardware so that everybody can play it now for free. One CPS3 game has no port, although SF3 TS has got a lot of life thanks to the ports lately.

Well seeing as i dont think Capcom sells CPS3 hardware anymore....youre not paying Capcom...youre more likely paying someone on eBay...
the SF3 ports for the Dreamcast and PS2 are as close as Arcade perfect as your going to get on a Console...

I never said that there was anything wrong with ports, I just don't like emulators... to me, they aren't legit.
