I've just sold a (working!) 6 slot to someone in Germany (posted it to him, well packed, etc) and now he's got it he's powering it up and just getting random garbage, square black blocks, etc. No game playing at all. It worked perfectly here.

He has apparently tried three powerful power supplies to no avail.

I can't imagine that it's been damaged in transit as I packed it so well.

I'm wondering what he can check on it - I've suggested using a multimeter to check the voltages and also to check that the main connector is clean and making good contact.

Is there anything else that he can do?

using a multimeter to check the voltages ...
That's the first thing to try as someone could try as many Power supplies as they like..If they voltage is not set right they may never get the board to work..Using the multimeter is a must as power supplies can be set to low or even too high..

the main connector is clean and making good contact
..
This too..

It sounds like maybe the Bios has either come out of its socket or is damaged.

Thanks guys.

He's now told me that his +5 volts line is reading +4.3 volts - no wonder it's not working!

He's now going to try and find a more suitable PSU. :)

He's definitely measuring it on the board but close to the edge connector (he can't measure it elsewhere without removing the metal frame which he doesn't want to do if he can avoid it).

Of course, close to the edge connector the voltage is going to be higher - seeing as it's 4.3 volts just there, heaven knows how low it's going to be further away elsewhere on the board!

He didn't say, but apparently he's now trying to find something better than what he has now.
