Neo AES video problem HELPPPPPPP !!!

Got a good condition AES recently and decided to get it modded with the NeoBitz - Jeff has been most helpfull with the mod and when I tested the unit upon return and had a problem with the video he even offered to do a fix for what he thought was a sync issue.

Well I just got the Neo back for the second time and it is still not working :

- screen is constantly flickering with either input (composite, s-video or component)
- while using component there is a green hue on the top of the picture and all colors are washed out.

Here is a short film, which compares s-video (beginning) with Component input FILM

Can anyone help me and Jeff figure out what's going on? Jeff has tested the unit on his TV and apparently did not see any problem.

I use the AES on a Samsung DLP HDTV on which I also have a PS2/GC/Xbox/Laseractive with Sega CD pack and NEC pack and all work flawlessly.

Thank you.

at first i thought it looked fine but after it really does flicker.
did youre AES do this before you modded it?

if it didnt and you modded it and it now flickers, maybe check the connections done inside the system and see if any of them look a bit dodgy.

I'd love to but I do not have access to any other TV - + Jeff Kurtz modded it and told me that he tried it on his TV without any problem (Don't know if he tried Component or s-video or both though).

I remember the sweet TV you had when I was there... :buttrock:

I wish I lived closer to help you out with :access to another TV .. :(

Can you hook it up through something else...like a VCR or,to see what happens..(Just throwing ideas out there.

Already tried to hook it up through a video component hub but ti does nto change anything - I really need to hook it up to another TV with component and s-video in order to compare all that.

You MUST try another TV. Or through a VCR. Jeff did the mod, and doublechecked it, it's not a dodgy connection. I'm guessing a tuner issue, where state of the art TV does not like not so state of the art NEO signal.

Keep us posted. If there are issues with modern TV's, we need to know!

I'd love to be able to tell, I also don;t know in which condition Jeff tested it (only s-video or composite or both) - I definitely believe Jeff has done a good job and he even installed an extra sync circuit for free to try to fix the problem.

The strange thing is that I had another Neo before which worked fin on this TV and all my other systems work on it (PC Engine, Sega CD, Laseractive, ...).

My last resort would be to ship the console itself to someone with an HD TV and tell me if there is any problem or not.

Just thought of something else -- a quick test you can do. Test the Neo using the standard A/V cable and let me know if there are any video issues. I never tested your Neo using a standard A/V cable. I test all the output jacks that I install (of course), but don't recall testing the original jack. I don't mess with the existing jack (unless asked to do so).

If the standard A/V jack isn't working either, we'll go from there as the video issue most likely goes beyond the Neobitz board. But we'll get it figured out somehow.

Let me know...

I think thats your problem. As mentioned earlier in the thread by omnedon.

I think Magnaflux has talked about problems with a supergun or consolized board on a Samsung HD TV before. I did a quick search of the forums and wasn't able to find it, but positive I rememer reading it.

You really need to find another TV to try it on. Most likely its just not compatible with your Samsung.

I wonder if it would work with my Panny HD set...hmm.

Well I found this thread : http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117956&highlight=samsung

but it says that the Supergun with Neobitz works perfectly on a Samsung HDTV.

YI-------PE!!!!

I don't want something like that to happen to MY AES--especially when I want to have it Neo Bitz Board modded by JMK!! In fact, when I tried to plug in mt DVD player through the component inputs of my RCA 36 incher, it didn't tur out right; I don't know if only the green showed up but I think everything was black & white. :help:

Howdoin tested the standard A/V jack and the problem was still there. So there may be something up with the Neo Geo itself.

I just fixed a two slot that looked very similar which had a palette ram problem. Now, I'm not sure why I wouldn't see it on my TV set, unless there is a bad solder joint or something and I've just been lucky when testing and it was making contact while I had it, but for Howdoin, it's not. But with the video he made, I now have something I can see.

It's a weird one, but I think we're on the right track now...

To test the palette ram on a standard bios one simply needs to turn the AES on with no game in and then note the color of the screen.

Code:
Blue = All tests passed (does not test z80).
Red = WorkRAM error (0x100000 region).
Green = PaletteRAM error (0x400000 region).
Yellow = VideoRAM error (programmed through custom port).
Pink = Bios selfcheck error (0xC00000 region).
Cyan = Memory card error (only tested if card in unit and blank).

If its got a unibios in put a game in and power on while holding down A+B+D. Keep the buttons pressed down, every time the screen flashes white its tested the memory. If there is an error anywhere it will be reported on screen.

From looking at the video it does look like it could be a possible palette RAM error.

I worked on your Neo over the weekend. I did find a couple potential problems. The power jack was going bad. A little wiggle would reset the Neo. Also, the SNK video daughter board had some issues which could cause some serious video problems -- one of the logic ICs was pretty warm to the touch. I replaced the board with one from a parts Neo.

I don't see any visible video problems (didn't last time either) on my TVs, but I'm thinking this may have been your problem. I'm going to test the Neo on a couple DLP sets for a couple hours tonight before shipping it out.

Some TVs just flip on certain consoles.
For example my Mom's Hitachi 21" TV flickers at the top of the screen if it get's fed a low resolution signal from a PS1 or PS2 at 50Hz and it also does it on the manu screens on my Samsung VHS Recorder. However it accepts low res signals from all of my other equipment such as MegaDrive and Saturn etc. It doesn't always mean theres a problem with your console; but perhaps a compatibility issue between the output of your console and the video chip inside your TV :D

well, Jeff has been kind enough to test the console and do some work on it but it appears that my Samsung DLP 5085 still won't take it properly.

Thank to Jeff for all the help and testing and I guess I'll need a new TV :(

PS: Neo with Neobitz board, component out, s-video, stereo and reset led (blue) for sale... works perfectly (Jeff Kurtz tested) expect with Samsung DLP.

I'm wondering if it's a TV setting. Some sets have seperate component jacks for HDTV and for 480i capabilities. If you have other component inputs, check on another input. Let me know if you can get into a setup menu on your TV and control the component video settings.

I tested on two different DLP HDTV sets, two standard TV sets, and a projector -- all tested a-ok...

I have tested with three different input in my TV :
- Component (on hDTV)
- Component through component switch box
- s-video

all have the flickering problem so it my be the video processor (Faroudja) that is in the set.

I'd be curious to test another Neo (with higher serial) with component on this TV to see if all Neo have the problem or just this one...
(Speaking fo which email me your price for a Neo with the same modif so that I can get it from you Jeff).

What is your Neo's serial # Howdoin? And good luck with your Elite Neo, I'm having trouble with mine as well (different problem though), and I've just been too lazy to send it in to Jeff. Jeff, if you're reading this, I will send it to you soon.

Bought a second unit which was modded by Jeff with Neobitz and component output:

- same results

It seems that :

1- the Neo Geo is not compatible with Samsung DLP 5085
2 -the Neobitz board is not compatible with the Samsung DLP 5085

I would like to try different systems but cannot buy them all at once so if someone could help me and lend me a system that is untouched and one with only s-video mod that would help a lot in figuring out what is going on.

Fuck that, I went on and bought a Polaroid 15" LCD TV today and the freaking thing (Neo Geo) is not working through the component input!!!

This is the second TV I try 2 moddified Neo on and this TV does not even find any signal when plugged with component (but finsd the PS2 no problem).

Works through s-video tough.

Still why the fuck did I pay $$$ for component and the 2 tvs I buy (including this freaking LCD which was going to be dedicated to my Neo) do not work.

Your neo issue is puzzeling... I've had so many people use their modified Neo systems (all models) on HDTVs, LCD TVs, etc, and always hear about great results. I can't begin to imagine why these just are not working for you... The only thing I can think of is that the first gen board's sync difference is casuing problems on some TVs.

So, if you want to send your system to me, I will change out the AES board to a later version board (AES3-5) to see if this fixes your problem -- I'll even cover the shipping.

Screw buying all the NEW types of TV's, just get a NORMAL TV with scart/RGB and A/V and play through that....saves dollars....lots...
