Hello all,

I am a new poster on this forum, I have been browsing this forum for a few weeks now, I have played Neogeo games for quite some time, probably since the inception of MVS. I currently own a Neogeo AES which is causing me a bit of a trouble.

Could you guys have a look at the pictures below and let me know your thoughts?

I have seen some threads saying that this might be related to problem of power supply or cart slot being dirty. I tried cleaning the slots and my power supply is a pro-pow 3 which is suitable for v6 boards. Thought I haven't tried a megadrive mark I adaptor. I am a bit short on ideas... :help:

Many thanks

Sabre

Power on your neo without a cart and tell what color the screen goes:

Code:
Blue = All tests passed (does not test z80).
Red = WorkRAM error (0x100000 region).
Green = PaletteRAM error (0x400000 region).
Yellow = VideoRAM error (programmed through custom port).
Pink = Bios selfcheck error (0xC00000 region).
Cyan = Memory card error (only tested if card in unit and blank).

is this the only cart you have?

Looks like what you get when you have a dirty cart or dirty slot.

Hi Metallizer, when I turn the neo without a cart it goes white a quarter second with little red dot and lines then blue :oh_no: <= like this blue

So according to your table it should be fine?

I've tested another one and it seems to do the same. Though when I move Fatal Fury in special position, the SNK logo appears on the boot screen.

Many thanks for your help.

...and as long as you remove the battery (not present on AES though) before washing. Anyway I find that washing boards in the sink helping yourself with a brush (for crucial areas like connectors) gives better results than just putting the board in the dishwasher.

I use the same technique, then dry in the sun (with covers over any eprom windows)

Still not working

Hello guys,

I didn't take to thank you all for your kind reply. Thank you very much !!! :D

Unfortunately after trying several cleaning (used all technics apart from the water one) my console hasn't show any sign of improvement :(

Do you guys have any other tips? Could this be the bios, the power supply, the ram? ...

Is it possible to change the cartridge connectors?

I also have a MD jap PSU which I will take from my parents house to try on the Neo in case my pro-pow 3 is too weak.

Please help

Hello guys,

Could you have a look at this pictures for me ?

These are pictures of my motherboard 6, if you look at the red circle there is a wire connected from one end to a Sony chip (don't know what it is :D ) and the other end to a pin called PAL so I guessed this had to do with modding the system. So I figured this could be the cause of my problems. My system is Japanese and i don't want it to run slower!!! So I cut the wire and tested the console, the console was still working but no progress on the garbage though but after passing the Neogeo logo the console would reset itself and restart the boot sequence. :conf:

Any thoughts on this? I saw another picture of a motherboard 6 like mine on this forum but it didn't have this modification though.

Thanks again for you help

That pal mod is not going to be causing the problems. Basically your problem is related to how the AES is pulling the gfx tiles and the fault in my view is going to be in 1 of 3 places...

1) faulty video RAM

2) fault between the video ram and the neogeo hardware that reads it

3) fault between the neogeo hardware that draws the tiles and the fetching of the tiles through the cart socket.

To give an example here in your original picture of the 330 pro gear screen. Basically the blue SNK logo that is incorrect at the bottom of the screen is because its drawing tiles from 0x200 ealier than where they are in the tile data. To me this suggests that there is a fault with one (or more) of the connectors on the cart socket or between the cart socket and the harware thats fetching the tiles.

I dont have any pinouts of the cart socket but if anyone knows what pin controls 0x00000x00000 in the S tile selection it would be a good place to start. This pin is sticking to zero for sure. There are certinally 12 lines that control what S tiles are pulled because there are only 0x000 to 0xfff tiles possible.

Thanks for your comments, I suspect a problem with the ram too, however about 4 weeks ago I managed to get the SNK logo at the bottom of the 330 pro gear screen to display by moving the cartridge slightly, though as of today I haven't manage to replicate the display.

I think I will take the problem pin by bin with a magnifier and try to realign them and check the solder as well underneath. In the mean time I was wondering how I could unmount an AES cart? Once unmounted I could see better where the fault is on the cart slot by inserting the board one by one without the plastic shielding.

Many thanks Razoola for your help.

I will keep my progress posted.

That comment tells you the problem is in the cart socket area and not ram. I would advise cleaning the socket again and also checking the solder points of the bottom of the cart socket on the back of the PCB for bad connections.
