I just got a KoF96 MVS, which the seller assured me was legit. However when I opened it up I noticed a couple of unusual things on the boards.

It uses PROGBK1 and CHA256, now I'm not sure if these are the right boards for the MVS version of the game. Also, the boards are a much darker green than any other BK1 & 256 boards I have, the print on them seems different and the chips are labelled the following:

V chips are F32-W1, F32-W2 & F16-W3
P1 & SP2 are F08-Q1 & F12-Q2
C1-8 are labelled F32-D1 to F32-D8
M1 & S1 don't have any labelling matching their location except M & S marked in pencil.

Pins 31 and 32 are soldered together on V3

Also the jumpers are not the same as on any other board I've seen and the marking is slightly off.

Is this a boot? I don't have a MVS yet, so can't test it.

Can you select bosses without cheats Andy? It might be a KOF 96 'plus' or a restoration of an MVS cart following a conversion.

I've seen the boards of 2 KoF96's before and they didn't have the odd labelled chips that this one has :(

Superfamifreak > Is this my cart? If it is and you have doubt, I will send you another one.

I don't think it is a boot, the original label has serial number on it and is a hologram label. I have another one here, I will take pic and post later.

When I sac a AES game like Samurai 2, I put the chips back on the MVS boards if they are suitable and make an MVS Samurai 2, meaning no cart is actually 'killed'.

I am pretty sure it's a bootleg, because I have a metal slug using this same "W" and "Q" naming convention. Anyway...It should have something like a PROGBK1 bc there are 4 v rom chips in metal slug. Instead it's in something like PROGTOP (i forget but it's one with only three V chip slots) so "W4" is soldered on top of "W2" like some kind of bootleg looking bios piggyback.

After inspecting my metal slug (which looks identical to this KOF '96) I'm pretty sure all the chips in these carts are PROMs.

Cart come from ebay?

cheers,
-DT

Is the PROGTOP an official board? If so I have a load of PROGBK1 boards so I can trade you one?

Who's named Daryl?

Just curious as to what's the chip soldering look like on this..Is it factory or ...?

I may have missed this but does it work/work well..?

I have a solid chipped KOF 96 and an EPROM version KOF 96....I'm going to look at the solud chipped one just to compare...

I had a third KOF 96 that if I can remember was solid chipped but didn't work right or work at all..I don't even remember If I ever got it to work since after telling the seller of the problem he wanted it back quickly............... with refund given..
I really didn't pay attention to the chips...shoot,it could of been just like this..

As far as I know it's legit..
It came as a SNKG cart with nice Japanese label and full Artwork in baggie.

It looks to have a repair though..

Both sets of PCBs I sent large scans of to your email address in your profile...I figure you got them.. :)

I'm pretty sure I have all those listed legit..I'll scan them and send them to you..

I'd like to Thank You..

Since I started to take out carts I decided to make small English lables for each Japanese cart so I can finally tell what they are without having to pop them in a mobo/compare to English cart of come online to check.

It's a big mess here with carts all over the floor :D and Fatal Fury Special was in it's kit box..Whereas I thought it would be on the shelf..I was like WTF!! Where's the heck it FFS!!! :p :loco:

I believe the PROGTOP is an official board, nothing suspicious about it other than bootleg roms, but it works fine like this (I have played all the way through the game with no problems) so I'll probably just leave it as-is.

I can take pics of FFS and SS2 for you. I see that you're chatting so i'll come in there and ask ya if you still need them. My camera sucks...

Strange that we should both have games that look exactly like this. Someone must have been making them that way for awhile. I bet it's a NGF scam. Use the original MVS to make conversions and then put bootleg copies of original games back in and sell them.

cheers,
-DT
