my monitor is not display full resolution..it is a 25 inches monitor but display the image as 23 inches monitor..there is still black screen all around the monitor..i want to get rid off these black to make the image display in full size..this monitor has a remote that let me change the position, size and contrast of the monitor..the weird thing about this is my monitor a horizontal monitor and i can only adjust the size vertically but cannot widen the horizontal..and another weird thing is when i playing the game(a fighting game)..if i pulled my character to the wall, the character will become really thin..so my question is can i widen the screen in the MVS dip set or i have to do something on the monitor pcb? thanks

You need to adjust the horizontal width coil on the boards. This is not something you should attempt if you are new to monitors. There is high voltage that can give you one heck of a nasty shock!! You also want to pick up a tool for this also.

You can find this tool at radio shack. Do some searches on horizontal width coil and read up. There should be plenty of info on this on the web.

Here are the radio shack tools. Mind you these are plastic, you DO NOT want to use metal as you WILL get burned. Also be very careful not to touch anything as the monitor will be on when making this adjustment! If you don't feel comfortable around high voltage, DO NOT ATTEMPT this adjustment.

Here is a shot of the white tool inserted into the horizontal width coil. I recommend having a second person around to watch the adjustments on the screen for you.

Do all monitor PCBs have a horizontal coil on it? The horizontal size on my monitor is actually too big .. I would like to reduce it a bit to get the stuff off the screen back on it. I looked at my monitor chassis/PCB but did not see a coil similar to the picture you've posted. Could you please provide a little more info on this? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

What is the model number of the monitor you have? Can you post a picture of it? Yes, I believe all have a coil though they look slightly different.

when you want to make the screen wider..which way do you turn..clockwise or counter clockwise..anyway i turned both ways and still get the same result and is there a max point that you cant turn anymore? i kept turning each way for a while and it seem like it deosnt reach to its end..

just turn it a little (1/4 turn) and you should see a result. Don't keep turning it until it stops as you are likely to break something. If you are not seeing anything happening, it is starting to get outside my realm of experience. The monitor may need a cap kit.

I will attempt to post pics or at least find out the model of my setup when I get home. I know its a Zenith monitor, if that makes a difference...

And what is a cap kit?

older gen monitors tend to have width coils, later models may use a potentiometer.

A cap kit is basically just all of the capacitors in a monitor. It will not help you to resize the output of your CRT, and it is not a fix-all for monitors. Often you can repair problems like dimming, bad coloring, striping, etc with a cap kit, but there can be other causes for these problems.

Horizontal size, vertical size, screen position are either going to be potentiometers or coils, and I suppose if one was broken or non-functioning you would not be able to adjust your monitor.

cheers and good luck,

Thanks for the information!

I've got my monitor chassis pcb out of the cabinet .. it was the only way I could get to the horizontal hold coil thinger. Which way normally adjusts for an increase or decrease in hold? Or am I just going to have to try it and see?

Also, I don't as of yet have the proper tool for adjusting the coil. At the top of the coil, I see what appears to be a hole that is hex wrench shaped. Will rotating that piece be enough? Or does the actual tool go through the hole farther into the coil?

And if the coil is bad, what effect would that have on the monitor? An unadjustable picture? Or would it cause other things to be bad?

I was hoping to get an easy answer from you guys since it is a real pain to get in and out.

The tool is hex shaped and fits down inside of the coil. Again DO NOT use a metal tool as it will get very hot very fast and will burn you, and ups the chance of shorting something out quite a bit.

Okay...

So is there more rotation going on than simply the top portion there where the hex nut thing is?

Not sure what you are talking about... Do you have a picture? You can also look back at the pic I posted above. The tool in that picture is down inside the tube.

Unfortunately, the only thing I can take pics with currently is my cell phone and it does a less-than-stellar job. I had a long talk with a coworker who used to do work on tvs and monitors, so he was able to help out quite a bit. I'm waiting for my tools to get here.. I was shopping for buttons from happ and noticed they had a monitor tool kit so I bought that too. :kekeke: I just hope my coil isn't broken.. adjusting it doesn't seem to do anything and it doesn't seem to rotate very far either.

I think I might just start a new thread about this. I seem to have hijacked this one. Heh.
