My 6 slot Neo Geo is giving the error:

Video RAM Error

WRITE READ
00008000 5555 FFCF

From reading around here it looks to me that BOTH the video RAMs are at fault, is that correct?

The two RAMs in question are, I think, the *narrow* 28-pin CXK5864 chips (not CXK5814 as I see is often mentioned here). Is that right?

There is space on the board to fit 'wider' RAM chips instead (ie 0.6 'width' instead of the CXK's 0.3) and I'm wondering if I can using some HM6264-70 RAMs that I have (either that or some UT6264PC-70LL that I also have).

Or aren't the 6264's compatible with the CXK's?

Thanks

You can use a 2016, 6116, 5814, or my favorite the CY7C128A-35PC which is a direct replacement for the 5814 35ns found in your neo. Remember that this is the 'fast' ram for your neo's video output, so you might as well put 35ns ram in to match the original specs.

6264 is not correct, bc the 6264 is 64k sram and the 5814 is 16k. Also, the 5814 is 24pin PDIP not 28.

All of this could easily be found using the forum search function.

Perhaps you confused the 8000 video error with one of the other video errors that would mean one of the 64k (flat-pack) sram chips?

cheers and good luck!

*edit*- yes that error message would indicate that both ram chips were not functioning correctly. Do you have a universe bios? If not you may want to get one so that you can boot past this error message to see if there are any other problems on the board before you replace these ram chips.

Thanks for the helpful reply - I now see where I was getting confused (and hence my intitial question) - I was looking at the wrong chips! Oops!

Anyway, I've now found the 5814's on the board (as opposed to the mistaken 5864's) so I'll order some replacements.

Afraid that I don't have a Universe BIOS. Ah well, will have to swap out those RAMs and hope for the best.

Cheers
