This month, GNG takes the "groove" into full gear as we celebrate the lo-fi technology of years gone by...with a makeshift musical showcase for the year 2005! Surrounded by a generous helping of 16-bit classics and some of the most fun-filled and addictive 2D titles for the next-gen systems, Chiptune musicians and GNG residents Glomag and Nullsleep are joined by special guest band OMAC for a show worthy of the best at the Knitting Factory, one of NYC's premier live concert venues!
OMAC, our headlining band, has been described as "Sesame Street meets James Brown on the dancefloor," combining 8-bit game sounds with heavy live drum grooves, and we're very excited about their GNG debut. Glomag ("driving, 8 bit eclectic pop songs and furious gameboy cover versions") and Nullsleep ("Eddie Van Halen of the GameBoy, a conceptually unique blend of hardware hacking and high-energy")'s chiptune rock's lo-bit inspired laptop performances will provide the perfect compliment, following up the live show with a modern disco vibe. Intermission music and video by Low-Bit Disco originator Aonami and Famicom Jazz group YMCK will fill out the night keeping the music non-stop. We're covering all corners of the game inspired music world with this rare friday night GNG!
This month's gaming experience focuses on the classic visual style that many of us grew up with, full of colorful sprites and not a 3D polygon in sight! SNK provides the feature title, with the 2D side-scrolling shooter Metal Slug 4 and 5 for the PS2, joined by such perfectly old-school Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube titles as Ultra Bust-a-Move, Space Invaders 25th Anniversary, and Wario Ware, Inc. Finally, we dust off the long-lost Super NES console for a few more rounds of the best 2-player games, including Street Fighter 2, Super Mario Kart, Puzzle Fighter, and Samurai Showdown, and a few more surprises!
