Corgan wants to reunite Smashing Pumpkins

June 21, 2005

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

On the same day Billy Corgan released his first solo album, he revealed that he wants to reunite his band, The Smashing Pumpkins.

"For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep," Corgan wrote in a full-page advertisement published Tuesday in Chicago newspapers.

"But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams," he wrote.

The Smashing Pumpkins, a leader in the early 1990s alternative rock revolution, broke up in 2000 after winning two Grammys and selling millions of albums during 13 strife-ridden years. Corgan's subsequent project, Zwan, dissolved after only one album.

Corgan, who lives in the Chicago area, did not reveal any details of a Pumpkins revival, including a possible timeline or what form a lineup might take.

Band members included drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky, who left after the final album's recording and was replaced by former Hole bassist Melissa auf der Maur on the subsequent tour.

Corgan's solo debut, "TheFutureEmbrace," was released Tuesday. Drummer Chamberlin-- who also played in Zwan-- is featured on the album, which takes an electronic turn.

Don't get me wrong, the Pumpkins is a good band, but this seems more like,

"Boo hoo! No one liked Zwan and before people start talking bad about my new album I'll pull this trump card!"

And here's part of his statement.

When I played the final Smashing Pumpkins show on the night of December 2, 2000, I walked off the Metro stage believing that I was forever leaving a piece of my life behind. I naively tried to start a new band, but found that my heart wasn't in it. I moved away to pursue a love that I once had but got lost. So I moved back home to heal what was broken in me, and to my surprise I found what I was looking for. I found that my heart is in Chicago, and that my heart is in The Smashing Pumpkins.

For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams. In this desire I feel I have come home again.

SP owns but they should stay in the 90's, their last album was pretty weak.

Now if only Toad the Wet Sproket would get back together. I guess hating each other is more important than making money. You have to respect that :smirk:

Well of course that's the way it seems. Billy Corgan is an egotistical ass. But never-the-less he is very talented, and the Pumpkins made some of the best music of the 90's. I'm all for the Pumpkins reuniting.

One of the funniest things about Billy Corgan is that no one seems to really give to shits about the guy... it's the Pumpkins as a whole that was so great. No one seemed to care about Zwan and no one really cares that much about his new solo album. I don't think that I am alone in saying that every time I see Corgan's name, all I can hope for is the news of the Pumpkins getting back together. Here's hoping this happens and soon.

Oh me oh my.

Perhaps it does sound a little like Corgan wants to fall back on something "safe", but.... I don't care if it's greed or not, it's the fucking PUMPKINS. I pray that this is for real.

Agreed. Personally, to me their last *really* good record was Siamese Dream. The dual CD one "Infinite Sadness" or whatever (the one with Tonite on it) was OK, but sorta blew.

I saw their last three shows (tour for Machina, farewell concert at United Center and the last one at Metro) and after that, I fully accepted that they were done and over with.

If they reunite, it'll be too soon. Have the patience to wait ten years at least! Rumors were going around at Coachella that next year, Pumpkins would be the reunited band, and I told everyone there'd be no way in Hell with the things they've said about each other in the press. Guess I was (sadly) wrong...

Toad had several good records. (Looks like I left the c out of their name)

I remember when Toad played live in Denver via the radio to promote their last (greatest hits) record. Two of the guys Glenn Phillips (the main guy/not sure how his named is spelled) and one of the other guys talked about moving their chairs further apart because they didn't like each other. They mentioned that they could not wait to be done with the promotion so they could get away from each other.

Oh well...they sounded great live though.

Anyway...back to SP

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness had some solid songs, it's just that the 2nd disc was a bit silly, and there were certain singles from that album that got way overplayed on radio/MTV (Tonight Tonight, 1979). But I still liked it overall.

I thought Adore was really good too. But Machina and Machina II never really caught on with me... sure there were a few good songs, but they didn't feel like "THE" final albums to release forever.

There's no denying that Siamese Dream was the best though... it's my favorite album of all time.

Um, yeah, I'd buy that for a dollar.

It's probably just wishful thinking on Corgan's part.

Why did you disband the group in the first place, Billy?

I've heard of Toad the Wet sprocket as well. Really interesting stuff.

Once I was utterly amazed to hear a ttws song on "friends"

how bizarre.

Interesting news about the pumpkins, thanks for posting this here. I would have probably missed it elsewhere.

Now what the hell is Zach De La Rocha up to?

I'd love to see a RATM reunion, but I'm currently gaga over Audioslave.

Smashing Pumkins are alright. Maybe after a few years of working with other musicians (James Iha and Corgan especially) , they can come up with some interesting songs for a new album.

I always thought that Smashing Pumpkins, especially their early stuff, was pretty much nothing but Billy Corgan, minus the drums of course.

I had always read that he was such a control freak that almost every guitar one would hear on the early albums was done by him in the studio.

If that's true, the only one stopping him from making more pumpkins music is himself.

BTW, more Zwan music would be great by me! :buttrock:

Problem with both Zwan and his solo album is they demonstrated one thing clearly- as great as Billy Cogan is, he is just a piece of a much better band.

Ths Smashing Pumpkins have had 5 years off the game. They might be tired out, but they might just be itching for a comeback....

Best Pumpkins song in Said Sadly from the B-side of Bullet with Butterfly Wings imo.
