Got it the other day for free from GameStop (mint condition, score), and hot damn this game's a lot better than I thought it would have been. When it first came out, I wasn't too familiar with Irem's games and looking at the screenshots made it look to me like some kind of Koei strat-game..but wow, how different it really is! The graphics have held up great and overall it's just fun..the X-Sonar aspect is really cool (it's looking at the skeletons of the graphics, which imo is pretty darn neat) and aside from blowing stuff up, the exploration factor is there too (looking for lost relics to power up and get more money).

I think Thunder Force is the guy here who praised this game many months ago, and now I'll definitely give this game big props.

How funny, that I find this game more enjoyable than the last entry in their R-Type series..

Speaking of irem, how's Disaster Report?

For the R-Type comment: :spock: .

Re: Disaster Report, it's pretty good. Not a revoluntionary game by any means, but a few parts survival "horror" (not really horror, obviously, but plays very similar) and a few parts environmental puzzle make for a unique game, worth a look. I still have my original copy.

Man, I was on Final's cock for like a month before I realized I was forcing myself to like the game. I mean, it was my first R-Type game (now, the only R-Type I haven't played is Leo...and Delta :( ) and I was just really excited. Then I saw through the 101 ship gimmick, and most of the time I would give up halfway through level 3 because of that unfuckingexcusable slowdown..the slowdown in Final just bored the hell out of me.

Final's a good game, just not great.

Thanks for comments on Disaster Report, I saw a place up here selling one for $13 complete..might pick it up, but I'm not a big fan of survival-horror games.

I have both JPN (U-Underwater Unit) & US (Sub Rebellion) in hand.
I love this game and you just feel you are the commander of that sub.

Chasing enemies is fun

It's well-worth $13, I say get it. It's not like a typical survival horror game; easier to play, IMO. The similarities are more in the control and the camera than the actual concept. Rather than run away from/kill zombies/mutants/pirate ghosts/ghost pirates you have to use wits to figure out how to safely get through the environment before something collapses or a bus falls or something.

And there's also a subplot having something to do with shady bad-guy types.

Worth $13 in uniqueness alone, IMO.
