Now in Shanghai - crazy place [now with 2 people] & PICS!

I'm leaving for Shanghai July 1st, Anyone who's been to China before, please give me tips: do's/don'ts, what to expect, what to see? I am going to be studying at Fudan University taking intensive Mandarin language classes. I plan to go to Beijing, and Nanjing as well. For anyone who's familiar with China, where else should I go that's not too far from Shanghai. Hong Kong is out, since it's too far of a trip. My classes don't start until July 9th so I will have a whole week to sight see as much as possible. I will be there until September 2nd so if anyone's familiar with Shanghai at all, please tell me what is fun, where to eat, arcade locations, etc. Thanks!

Tip#1:
Make Sure you always carry a bible and christian literature wherever you go. Hand it out to everyone you meet.

Tip#2:
Whenever you can, make sure to bring up Taiwan. Make sure to refer to it as an Independant country. The love that shit.

Tip#3:
When Sending Emails home and Blogging, make sure to use words like Democracy, Human Rights and freedom.

Tip#4:
It's always good to refer to the virtues of Marxism and reject wonton capitalism.

Bring up the fact that Japan textbooks are always right

stop one of every 3 people you pass and ask them where to get some American take out food

Wear a shirt that says Daewoo sucks

Walk around screaming "I am the mighty giant sent here by Buddah to destroy you"

Ok seriously,

Dump your Girl.

Find some hot peasant girl with good teeth that is dying for a Green Card. Make sure she doesn't speak english.

Marry her and giver her family a nice cash present.

Once your done with your studies, take her back to the US and live somewhere where there are no Chinese people. You pretty much will have your own household slave to cook, clean and do whatever you want. It's not like she can leave you.

That's what my friend told me to do.

Buy a Lonely Planet Guide.

I'm (likely) going for a few weeks in August, that's all I plan to do (and hit the exact cities you mentioned + Hawaii on my way back for a football game).

You can't go wrong with that series. They cover everything you mentioned. I've used 10 of them, they're usually pretty decent and great if you don't want to go on some stupid "bus tour" (or equivalent).

Man have things changed since the 80s... I had a friend go back then (pre-Tiannamen Square Massacre) and her slides were hillarious because her government guide was always with her. Not like that any longer of course :D

Serious Reply

I went to China in about 96'.

I was only in Shanghai for a few days so I'm not sure how much advise I can give.

As for places to go I don't even know where to begin theres so much.

TIPS:

1.) It rains alot and it doesnt just rain if fucking downpours, this makes it insanely humid. Don't just get an umbrella get a rain slicker.

2.) If your buying something from a vendor you must haggle with them.

3.) Buy alot of stuff while you're there, anything maufactured in China is dirt cheap there so take advantage of that. Shanghai is the biggest mainland port so there are goods aplenty.(especially artwork)

4.) Watch out for bootleg shit!

5.) Do not be afraid to eat things you wouldn't normally.

6.) See and do as many things as possible, which should not be a problem.

7.) Be prepared to walk everywhere!

8.) Prepare to see some pretty sad living conditions, and you know China has a population problem and 1.3 or so billion people sounds like alot but you have no idea until you actually see it for yourself.

When I went we landed in Shanghai and made a giant reverse ? shaped loop out, around and down to Hong Kong over the course of 3 1/2 weeks.

I dont know how heplful any of this will be to you. You can shoot me a PM if you have any specific questions.

Just came back from Shanghai not too long ago and let me tell you:

- Food is so cheap over there.
- Restroom is not that convenient to be found and they are kinda "below" US standard. Make sure you bring some tissue paper with you (pocket size is good for you) coz restroom over there normally has no tissue paper available (depends where you go) and they will charge you some $$ for tissue paper :kekeke:
- Be smart (don't act like American or tourist)
- Know the timing to cross the street (make sure you become a jaywalker). Timing is very important

I had a lot of fun in Shanghai though. Girls are pretty for sure. :smirk: I don't think you will have any problem finding a "girlfriend/wife/slave" overthere as girls in China love to hang out with American (or white) and want to live overseas. :glee:

Very good points

Also I'm pretty sure that there is no Pepsi over there just Coke a Cola products.

and everyone smokes so I hope cigarettes don't bother you.

Please note that The US is working on stepping up it's Anti-Trafficing laws.

Do whatever you gotta do now.

Another Suggestion:

You can be tried in the states for Commiting sex crimes in other countries. So stay out of underage brothels.

It's a long read, but useful:

US State Department's Consular Information Sheet (1/15/05)

I'm about 5 pages into it for curiosity's sake. Only thing that strikes me as interesting and to be mindful of is the exchange rate. Foreign currency, according to this sheet, can only be exchanged at hotels, banks, and other 'official' places, and is flat out illegal to do so anywhere else.

Oh yeah- and leave the religious material at home, as the government doesn't take kindly to it.

Whee okay, I can help out hehe.

Some quick tips:
1. Crossing the street during a red light, even if there are no cars coming... is a BIG no-no.
2. Keep your wallet safe. If you have a bag, hold on to it tight. People may come up to you with a knife and slit your bag and steal your stuff without you knowing.
3. When taking a taxi, keep alert. The driver may take advantage of your tourist status and drive around in circles to jack the price up.
4. Watch out for black Audi's with a red hammer/sickle on them <3
5. Always bring toilet paper
6. Shanghai is high on crime. Good luck, and watch out who you associate with.

There IS Pepsi. In fact, Pepsi is rather popular over there because of celebrity endorsement.

Bootlegging is on the down lately, thanks to government crackdowns. If you do plan on buying any bootlegged goods (eh, I guess white people don't go there for that... but Chinese people do =P) keep it nicely packed to avoid customs.

Security is lax as hell. Well, when I went in 2002, it was very lax. All we did was talk to a security guard and pass a gate, showed passports, and we got out. Not sure if that's cuz we were Chinese (which uh... doesn't make much sense considering China's wariness of American spies).

Norton is a retard.

Keep your cock covered if you don't want diseases.

Of course, the same goes for the rest of the world, not just Shanghai. ;)

On a more serious note (though the above is good advice no matter what), when you use a taxi, don't let them put anything in the front seat. If you do, MAKE SURE you get it before you get out of the taxi. There was a woman where I work who had her laptop stolen in Shenzhen this way. And of course, the taxi driver wasn't legit nor did the receipt have a valid taxi number on it (so it couldn't be traced).

It's a bullshit lie. Many people told me so but actually it's one of the safest cities in China.

I was hand-carring my Gucci wallet in Shanghai and nearby cities all the time and I was fine. I'm telling the truth here.

There are some thieves around metros and bus stop but you just need to pay more attention.
