Where is the spirit of adventure in America ?

Apart from putting a man on the moon which was a show of strength and might during the cold war.

All of the great adventurers who conqured mountains and poles or sailed around the world were euros.

BTW not putting the US down here, love the place, only interested in thoughts on this.

Considering the move westward (the conquest and expansion from original colonies to california) can be considered a huge, conglomorative, national adventure, I think you're slightly (entirely) off base.

Seriously, could you imagine "Bumsfelt of the Antartic"

I didnt mean this to be a political thread, more historical.

whats left to adventure? discovering the US was like the last great adventure so im not so sure what we are supposed to do. we landed on the moon and there is a pretty big "extreme sport" following here that involves climbing mountains, hiking etc so I dunno what we supposed to do. Find some sort of landmass that hasnt been discovered yet?

only hing left is to explore other planets which is largely pointless and the us isnt the only country that is unwilling to do it.

America was founded AFTER the age of nautical exploration so of course we weren't a apart of that. But aside from that I think the manned of the moon and unmanned exploration of the solar system by NASA automatically trumps anything accomplished by the grand EUROPENIS.

(Not to mention the inevitable manned mission to mars)

But aside from that, I'd definitely look into the expansion westward.

lol, this thread is a sad attempt at American Bashing.

Invention of the airplane and development of flight springs to mind. That was pretty fucking adventurous.

Anyway, the whole "what country did what" stuff is idiotic. What have you or I done that's adventurous? I hate when people feel proprietary over another person's accomplishments, especially due to something as meaningless as where you happened to be born.

For example, when the Lakers were winning their titles not so long ago, you'd see a lot of people here acting all proud... as if they had even the slightest motherfucking contribution to the championship win. Makes me want to projectile vomit into their driver's side window.

So out of curiousity, what mountains have you conquered? Any lost countries discovered? I don't know, maybe you have; that's why I'm asking.

On this note I have to ask the same question, only not Nation Specific. More like "Why the fuck did mankind lose interest in Space Exploration?" ---Okay so man went to the moon. It's not as big a deal as it sounds. If we were only going to the moon because of a pissing contest with the Soviets then it's moot no matter how you look at it. By now we should already have several bubble colonies on the lunar surface where not just NASA personnel and Scientist can live, but ppl (like myself who hates being confined to the damn Earth were just about everything has been done) could also visit and or live there. Instead we're still fucking around trying to build an International Space Station... fuckin' lame. We should be on the moon, and have already built a craft capable of going to and from Mars. In reality this would have happened, but mankind lost their fascination with actually moving into space and getting off this freckin' planet with nothing save the ocean's bottom to explore anymore, and instead waste millions (billions at this point) in entertaining themselves with SCI-FI movies instead of using that money and global ingenuity to make colonization and terraforming Mars perhaps possible.

Thus while I agree with Southtown Kid about "Personal Adventures" and/or "Spirit" I also see that without a collective backing and drive individuals cannot do much, and just look at NASA. They're still using the antiquated Space Shuttle and everything's privatized. People laugh and think of space exploration as a joke instead of seeing the possibilities. Too bad because the world will end before we ever colonize the moon let alone get to Mars. Should've started sooner.

FUCK IT.

Exactly.

We are still looking at going into space with manned missions, but of course it has to be deemed "safe" first by sending unmanned shit out.

Oh, and even though Bush was talking about making a manned Mars mission, with Congress being what it is, I doubt funding for anything like that would be passed. Why fund space flights when we can go to war pointlessly and waste our money that way?

And they won't fix the Hubble Space Telescope, which is a GOD DAMN shame.

We also have deep sea divers, as the only unexplored place left on the planet is under water. And it's arguably as dangerous doing that kind of exploration as it is getting into space. Think about how much land mass is under water (earth is what, 70% water or something like that?). We've got a lot left to explore, it's just a matter of figuring out how to get there.

BULLSHIT.

The Vikings beat you to it by about 600 years.

I suppose the Viking artifacts and coins all around Nova Scotia and New Foundland dating back to at least the year 1200 are just something to ignore.

The Vikings arrived at Newfoundland, killed a bunch of Indians and left. They had no knowledge about been in a new continent.

Spain conquered most of America

Leif Erikson arrived in NewFoundland.

Therefore the Vikings discovered America.

Your argument is absolutely baseless :kekeke:

Just because the Spanish "CONQUERED" large portions of South America along with the Portugese doesn't actually mean that they "DISCOVERED" anyhing.

There are Viking maps with outlines of the Canadian coastline on them that were made centuries before the time of Christopher Columubs. So not only were they aware of this land having actually set foot on it and encountering the natives. But they were definitely aware that it was a huge and distinct landmass via it's relationship by distance and location from Europe.

you know what would be so damn awesome if we did the moon bubble thing but instead we built the bubbles on the ocean floor. i guess there would have to be a purpose first but damn would it be awesome to live at the bottom of an ocean in a giant bubble city. they could simply build the structure with materials that wouldnt deteriorate over time then simply swap the water inside with some sort of device that simply harvests oxygen from the surface. prolly only need an intake/exhaust system to keep a livable supply of oxygen down there and maybe even some sort of tunnel system that would allow for simple transportation to and from the city using current autos.

but the thing is why would we want to live down there. we would have to have a need or something.

i also want to live on the moon or mars or something.

There's a slight problem known as sea level pressure.

forget about that. i dont care about it and neither should u.

anyone else would like to live down there with me? i will must try to populate the city with ocean babies. plus there could be external lights that light up the ocean around you during the "day" that dim out to darkness at the right time. maybe spears etc harpoons that stick out of the structure for defense or maybe even harpooning a fish or 2 for food. it would look something like this:

^^^.^_________big bubble__________

^^.^/^^^^^^^|;;;;|awesome^^^^^\---------> harpoons
^^^/^^^___^^^|;;;;|^^^^^^___^^\---------> spears
^.^/^^^|;;;;|^^|;;;;|^^^^city|;;;;|^^\---------> etc.

Fine. I'll hunt whales and swim with dolphins with you, but only because your architecture is the next Manhattan.
