A lottery organized by the USA to win green card???

I just came back from a reception at the french consulate and I have met an Egyptian there who told me that there is a "federal lottery" (that's what he say If I'm not mistaken) every year in november and all the citizens from the countries which have emigration rate to the USA below a fixed value can apply to win a green card. That's the "diversity visa" he said.

He told me that he'll leave in two weeks to go close to Chicago. I was so surprised that I thought he was bullshiting me but he seemed serious.

If anyone has an info on this, please share it.

could be true, so many people want into the USA every year, there is no way we could let them all in, our country would fall apart from overpopulation. a limit on the amount of greencards every year is a great idea, and a lottery would mean everyone had an equal chance.

we're like a club with way too many fucking members, and we need to start being selective with noobs.

The lottery is true. My ex used to always talk about how she'd love to win the citizenship lottery, but it was an incredible longshot.

Ok so it's seems to be possible. I find it quite strange to give green cards via lottery but it puts all the people in a kind of equality.

even if you are a winner in the diversity lottery it does not guarantee you will get a green card, there are still background checks, etc ..................
