How much longer do you think LAG will be an issue for online games?

Do you think there is anything game developers will do to make online games on next gen consoles much less laggy? Have any of you read anything recently that would indicate a breakthrough in technology where lag, desyncs, and lost connections are all but a non-issue in games? What direction will our internet connections go in? Is there honestly no way to get rid of it for EVERYONE, regardless of what kind of connection thet are on? I would like to get your thoughts...even theoretically speaking...on how current or future technology can assist is eliminating lag, disconnections and desyncs in online games.

I have Xbox Live and PS2 Online. I don't lag that often, but I have been getting disconnected more frequently than I have in the past with SBC Yahoo DSL. But that's pretty much irrelavent...I'd like to know where we are heading in online gaming where issues like this are a thing of the past.

well how about this for a solution.
1) get a stable and faster connection.

its not the game developers problem :/ its yours.
dont complain about lag, its your decision wether or not you want a faster connection or not.

LAG an issue for online games? its an issue for as long as you dont have a fast enough connection to have none.

I don't see it going away within the next 10 years. Of course the next-gen machines won't be the ones to blame - it's more a matter of the archetecture that is used for broadband. Too many variables that all have to be perfect.

Maybe when (if?) the infrastructure is changed that supplies cable things will become more stable.

It'll go away when they stop tacking netcode onto games that weren't designed with online in mind. Racers, FPS, and even DOA are better suited to writing prediction code (to mask lag) than something like KoF. There's always lag as nothing happens instantaneously, but the perception of lag depends on how well the game can cover for it.

The problem isnt with peoples download speed, its their upload. I can be using 75+% of my download bandwidth, and none of my upload, and i can play a 64 person battlefield game with little lag. There will always be some type of lag of course, but once upload speeds improve, lag will decrease.
