Have you ever changed your racial/religious clichés after meeting someone?

I was wondering since it happened a lot to me.

For example, I had a lot of clichés about musulm people. I'm now working in Egypt and I have met many open minded musulms with whom I had great discussions about the Coran and the behavior a musulm should have.

I even read some part of the Coran and I was surprised to see how different it can be from what the medias tend to make us believe.

The musulm religion (completely different from the intergrism based on it) took a completely different image to me after that.

So if it happened to you with any cliché, please share your experience here.

Do not change religion. Jesus is your only saviour, don't be swayed so easily from the beast in the middle east.

I won't change my religion but I just got a new idea, more accurate, of what the the musulm religion was.

Sorry Robert, my opinion of the French will never change.
I was a kid in Auckland when the french committed a serious act of terrorism (Rainbow Warrior) and got a heroes welcome in Paris after their premature release
You guys are as bad as ................................................................

BTW I dont blame you

Absolutely. Most Christians I know go to church on Sunday, are horrible customers, poor parents, self-righteous and downright depressing, condeming and annoying.

Then I met some who have actually read the Gospel and live it daily. Yes, they struggle and fail. Their hearts are in the right place and they don't condemn others for their mistakes and downfalls. Seeing the attitudes and lives of those who live by faith and love others as Christ loves them is what made me want to be part of the Church.

Are many churches lame? Yes, they don't have the Spirit and therefore can't walk.

I too have worked with many Muslims and that changed my attitude of them. They were a great bunch of people with similar values and ethics as me. I've been invited into their homes, have met their families and I really enjoyed it. Do I agree with their religious views? Not all of them, and I didn't convert to Islam. I did give my respect to them because the didn't condemn me for being Christian and I don't condemn them for being Muslim. We respected each other and got along fine.

Every Christian (besides myself) that I've ever met has been all talk and no action.

They know how to read the words written on the pages of the books, but they don't know how to make the necessary lifestyle changes in order to follow them.

I'd be inclined to explain to them what they're doing wrong, but as much as I am a devoted Christian, I'm an equally apathetic individual.

I just hope they won't be too shocked when they're greeted by eternal hellfire instead of the infinite love and joy they were expecting.

PS - Jesus Loves You.

Nigger this & nigger that.
Then I met my best friend.
Until I met him I thought all black people were just dumb niggers.
He showed me I was wrong.
Have been best friends for over 10 years now.
I would help that man bury A body.
But the bigger picture here is that DashK is A fucking dolt.

getting to this site had me reconsider my views on other religions.

even some jewish members were nice to me ...... which lead me to think that all people can get along, regardless of their religion.

@Ely13:

I know how you feelin' about this, dude. but trust me, most Muslims are not like this.

it's like when we here read about the Abu Gharib and Guantunamu scandlas, how American soldiers randomly kill innocent civilians, and how Western journalists insult Mohammed "peace upon him" ..... etc (and like you guys, we have biased media), people can't help but think they are hated by the whole world, while in fact, most of the world condemn these acts (but we don't read or hear about them. thanks to the media). same here. 90% of the people condemn all the acts in the links you provided, but you won't hear or read about what they think.

we are in a whirlpool. if both sides stayed like this, things will only get worse.

Any religious hang-ups I had were gone by Junior High School because so many of my classmates were from all over the spectrum (Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Jew, Muslim, etc). I guess I can thank being raised in SoCal for that.

Race issues were more mixed: I never seriously believed any one person would automatically be like the common stereotype, but I still kept them (and joke about them) until the end of High School. I was a Republican up until then, and among my peers it was fairly accepted to make racist jokes without any serious guilt because the whole point of being Republican (to us) was to make money and take away any advantage from the poor and minorities and belittle their "inferiorities" (which were often just a result of the unfair system). By the end of HS I had grown out of that mentality.

Yes, in school a few weeks ago, we met a Jewish Man.

There was a special assembly held for him, he was a polish man called Solly Irvine. He was no ordinary jewish man, he was a holocaust survivor, he had many amazing, and horrific storys to tell. It totally flipped my view on all and any Jews, (Bar JewBag), it is amazing that the man is still sane, and a very nice, calm man too.

I'm Jewish, but I've never had any tension with the Muslims at my school, despite the conflict in the Middle East. When I was going to start at my high school (one of the most diverse campuses in my school district), I thought there would be tension, but there was none. Just thought that was worth mentioning.

As for races, I never really held any prejudices against any group. I guess it was a good upbringing.

I never thought that Hasidic Jews could do reggae, but I saw an album that proved my sorry goy ass wrong.

Also, I never imagined that anyone could incorporate jazz hands into the song "Angel of Death" by Slayer. That also surprised me.
