My 6 slot candy cabinet PSU died today. I verified it was the PSU by taking the PSU out of my TMNT cabinet and putting it in my Neo Geo. Never before have I been able to turn on the 6 slot so readily since changing the PSU. Something must have been not quite right with the old one - in fact it had died 3 times including today and after lengthy inspections previously nothing could be found, it just worked again after some weeks.

Anyway, although the new PSU works great as far as turning on the machine goes, after playing for a few minutes (sometimes up to 15 minutes), the machine now crashes and gives me random squares on the screen. Turning off may not fix it unless I wait a few minutes. Also I found that increasing the voltage makes it slightly more reliable. Is this the right thing to do?

How high can the voltage go without damaging the Neo Geo? It is documented to use 12volts and 5volts. I am about 14.4volts and 5.7volts currently. Actually if I make it 12volts it won't actually power up properly.

6 slot are greedy mothers when it comes to current. What most likely happened to your old power supply is the control element has suffered extreme thermal damage because it couldn't meet your 6 slot current requirements or it was just to old and used up. The reason it worked after being left alone for a long period of time is the element will cool down, then when you try to use the supply again the damaged control element will only have enough life in it to run for short periods of time, but make no mistake its finished. Let me ask you this, did the supply ever get boiling hot when it worked? A 6 slot needs at least 15 amps on the 5 volt line. I am currently using a arcade power supply with a current output of 15 amps on the 5 volt line. What you need to do is measure the voltage of your power supply why the board is running and adjust it to 5.3 and like 12.3 volt why its running, it need a 5 volt load voltage. No do not turn your supply up to full capacity.

As mainman said, I would add

The 6 slot typically draws 5 amps from the 5 volt supply, but you need as much headroom as possible. An arcade style psu like the Peter Choi is rated at 15 A max so its ideal.

I would not set the 5 volts to anything above 5.2, mine are set to 5.1 at the moment.
Remember to measure at the jamma/mvs edge connect not the psu as there will be voltage dropped in the harness. and of course the board must be running to obtain the correct load.

A funny thing happened to me recently. I converted a machine from SC2 to 6 slot. Even though the power supply was adequately sized ( 15A on 5 V ) It blew after 15 mins. of runtime?

When I replaced it , the new one ran fine, so I know it wasn't a short.

I wonder which draws more , System 246 or 6 slot?

I rechecked the voltage and was about the check the amps, but it won't work if I lower the voltage...

Before there was absolutely *NO* heat from the old PSU, the new one is warm. I used to run the old PSU *without* the fan plugged in to the cabinet because of lack of heat. The new PSU I've plugged the fan in due to the warmth. Both PSUs are rated equally.

I need a brand new PSU anyhow as I now only have 1 PSU for 2 cabinets. I'll put the brand new PSU in the neo since that is the one that actually died.
