I think they provide college tuition assistance, but i would suggest against it,

living at sea is not the greatest way to live, i hear they use credits for currency

and not cash in sea, and you have to purchase credits before you board the ship,

to pay for stuff abord a ship. and try going fishing, see if your sea sick. if it was

me, i would join the air force, but thats the hardest regiment to get in.

only YOUR family gets benifits (wife, kids). your mom, dad etc wont get anything. and your kids will only get them till they turn 21, but you and your wife will get them forever. so if you wanted to do this to help out your family, and you aren't married, don't do it.

It's a bad idea to leave your family behind because you will be in the Navy way to long & that would be very hard on her to wait that long for you to come back home. Your wife will miss you. You do have wife right?. :)

My brothers friend join the Navy & was gone for a very long time until he was finish being in the Navy because I saw him at the mall back in 2001 which it was cool! to see him again.

I would never join the Air Forc, Army, Marine Corp or the Navy because it isn't worth it & their might be chance that they will send you to fight in a war. :(

Think very hard before you decide to join the Navy or just do something else that will take care of your families benifits kay. :)

If you're going to join the NAVY, do it because you want to do it... not because you think it's going to be a quick-fix for a family crisis. As someone already mentioned (I forget who, and I'm too lazy to scroll back up the screen) if you're not married the benefits don't count for a girlfriend. Another thing to think about is whether or not you can handle be gone long periods of time without being on dry land. A few of my droogs from back home joined up and by the time they got to their first shore leave, they were all ready to leave. Some from sea sickness and others from the motion of the sea (not neccessarily sick mind you) and the fact it's boring as fuck for the most part.

The only pros I can think of is that if you're in a MOS that keeps you on a ship and get deployed for war, there's not really an enemy Navy on Earth save the Russians doing their thing in subs here or there (whom were watching but not fighting) that can rival us. Thus you'd be 99.8% gauranteed to not be a casualty of war, but there's always that 1% human error / "Shit Happens" you need to think about. But if you can deal with that, hey go for it... why not? But if you're not with an open minded other half chances are Jody's gonna be playing anchors away on your girl before your fifth letter home gets to her. Not saying it to be an asshole, it's simply how it is most of the time. It's a good profession though and don't let anyone knock it for you.

In the Navy...
In the Navy...

Jokes apart, I agree with Merc. Here in Brazil, LOTS of people with low income are volunteers rto the army, as a easy way to get a job. The don't really like the soldier's life and get frustrated after the first 1-3 years, and ending turning up the intitution in a bunch of incapable men, and the worse, prejudice the ones that looks for that slots with a real vocation.

Never belive anything a recruiter says...

Navy isn't bad.....

But recruiters are bigger lowlifes than unliscened used car salesmen.

This man speaks the truth. Recruiters are worse than credit-card collectors.

I joined the Navy when I was 18 - As Merc said earlier, ONLY join if YOU want to join - you should never do it for someone else.

I joined up because all my mates were in, but found out very quickly that the lifestyle just didnt suit me - the actual job that I did (MEM - marine engineering mechanic) was ok, no problems there, it was just the liffestyle that didnt suit, so I came out, which was the best decision I made and I've never regretted it once, but I did waste quite some time there when I could have been doing other things

In this day and age, Navy is probably the safest branch of the Armed Services this side of the Coast Guard. However, there are the bordom/cabin-fever issues people have already mentioned. All my friends in the Armed Services gave the Air Force the best review --but as noted above it can be harder to get into.

My advice?

Don't do it.

The bright side to joining is that you won't be going to Iraq.

the only thing the US Navy has to worry about is each other

but at least you have the Royal navy to protect you. The Missouri has a silkworm missile locked onto her and the gloucester shot it down - apparently it was an impossible shot: gotcha

its not so bad, i've been in the royal Navy for 15 years and i have 7 left before i become a pensioner

pros
decent pay
nice gratuity when you leave (uk anyway) i get £40,000 in 7 years in my current rank and £450 pension every month from the age of 40
some stability
decent visits
possible nice postings abroad - i got Gibraltar for 3 years and it was superb

cons
it can get boring
sea sickness can be a bitch, i suffer slightly and its an awful experience
time away from family

its true about Benefits, The Royal navy offers my wife alot of different benefits but my mother gets nothing, but if i wasnt married my mum wouldnt get enough funs to bury me if i was to die in combat

bad time for the US Navy... they are cutting 80,000 people out. I'm currently working in a joint environment and 2 CT branches are getting cut out. They have to either finish their enlistment or retrain into a new field. So if your looking for
long term i wouldn't join the Navy for the moment.

And as many people have mentioned don't look at it for a quick fix to get benefits for your family. 3 out of 10 married people in my flight had their spouse leave them.. some with kids.

On the other side of that... the Air Force is the best for family. It offers more stability and much better housing around CONUS for enlisted.
Just make sure you don't choose a career field that deploy's alot :loco:

Maybe i can help a bit.

Let a real soldier tell you how it is.

I'm in the air force but the air force and navy share something important in common that the army and marines don't have. QUALITY OF LIFE! BENEFITS, BENEFITS, BENEFITS! your family will be taken care of however in the Navy the biggest burden and causes of most divorces is the fact that you will be at sea(quite often for some career fields) if you get in a certain career field. And it ain't pretty. Don't take what I say lightly. I've seen plenty of families destroyed from b.s. like this.

If you want the real scoop i'd say join the air force and this is not because I am in the air force its because it has the least cons. And don't trust recruiters one bit they are liars from hell. Pick the job YOU want, don't let them sway you no matter what. Trust me and I hope the best for you.
