I haven't been to this place since december. I found it pretty annoying with the bickering that was going on. However, I decided to get over it. Anyway, my main point of posting tonight is to wonder what you tech guys know about Voip.
If you can, please share some sites that has alot of info on what you may know about this.

Heh, a local ISP is letting my family betatest their possibly upcoming VIOP service for 3 months, starting, well, today. I need to set it up. We get over a thousand minutes a month for the beta, and we get $20 off our ISP's bill a month FOR LIFE. It's awesome. It's even cooler since we're apparently one of only a handful of families chosen.

I also use a free VOIP service called FreeWorldDialup (freeworlddialup.com) along with the software VOIP SJPhone. I'm 628428 on FWD so if you ever want to try it out let me know and I'll hop online. The cool thing about FWD is that you can call toll-free numbers for free, so you can call the international operators and talk it up with them. And if you get a phone card you can call their 800 number through FWD and use that card.

Dan, you have a limited amount of minutes?

That's really weird. I have VOIP via Time Warner's RoadRunner and it's not limited, plus I have free longdistance to the whole nation, Canada, and Mexico, and to call somewhere like Japan is about 2 cents a minute or something.

Well, it is a beta test after all. We can't call international numbers either.

I'll post here once it's all set up.

Well, the reason VOIP is so good is that your phone isn't a phone in the traditional sense; rather, it's a device hooked up to the internet. That's why calling around is one flat rate, it's sort of the equivalent of going to a website that's hosted in a foreign country.

Anyhow, this website should be helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_over_IP

This must be what they call "the wrong way to skin a cat."

Not really, alot of the forums members were bickering about crazy things. So I sort of quit comming up until now. It SEEMS to have stopped and has gotten alot better to be able to post here.
Anyway Dan, thanks for your contribution.

No problem. I was going to set up the VOIP adapter today but I didn't have a power outlet free (I need "Liberator" adapters since I have so many bulky PSU cords from various peripherals). Once that's all set up I'll bump this thread and let you know what I think of it.

Oh, I should add that Free World Dialup is compatible with hardware phones. If there aren't any VOIP companies that would do a trial or have a money-back guarantee, and you are seriously considering using VOIP, you could buy or borrow a VOIP phone or VOIP phone adapter (which lets you plug in a standard phone (including cordless)), and test it out with FWD and see how you like their VOIP service. I guess that's kind of a stretch, but it's nice to know. SJPhone is okay, but sort of buggy (sometimes I'll "hang up" using the program, but it won't terminate the call properly, and eventually the call times out and then I can place another call).
