I wanted to get some advice for replacing a Z80 sound chip in a neo MV-1F board. I could take this chip from one totally dead board and tranfer this to the other one with the Z80 error... do I need a desoldering pump?

Thanks

Remember that these boards have three layers of track, double sided with tracks sandwiched inbetween for some connections like 5 volts and ground.

Unless you have experience working on these boards, I wouldnt recommend desoldering ICs. Z80 error messages are not necessarily caused by the Z80 itself.
I would check for broken traces around the associated memory 6116 and the SM1 rom before ripping out Z80s.

I see what you are saying... removing the Z80 is the last thing I want to do for sure. Thanks for the tip.

Do all neo boards have a middle layer, or are some only souble sided?

Some are only double sided. Will try to make a list.

afaik there are diffrent versions of the 2 and 4 slot, one has the inner layer the other does not.

I think MKL may have some info on this

we should pool the info and pass it on to Briggs to add to the HardMVS board listing.

The presence of internal power and ground layers is irrelevant here as the holes of thru-hole mounted components are obviously not occupied by these layers. The holes, however, are double sided*, which means a component pin will be soldered on both solder and component side, making it pretty difficult to remove without the right tools.

* The holes on cart PCBs on the other hand are soldered only on one side and chips are therefore much easier to remove here, which explains why any idiot can make conversions...

OK, so as long as you can properly desolder double sided you're good then?? I had no problems at all with the 5814 on my 4 slot. Lots of sucking involved with the desoldering iron bulb. Desoldering braid seemed to help lots when heating to melt the solder on both sides of the board.

Wow I never realised the chips in carts are only soldered on one side. I often wondered how people remove chips in carts after all the trouble I had desoldering the old bios from my aes.

If it's that easy maybe I'll have a go at converting some of my mvs carts.

Just beware of this, once spent hours figuring out why there was a Z80 error message on a 1F before I realised that the mid track connection was missing on the 6116.
