The directon of console videogame videogaming bothers me. XBox360 games all available in 16:9 780p? HDTV is great for DVDs but who seriously thinks all of your games look better as wide rectangles?

Sega was really smart when they made the Dreamcast with VGA and I like how the Atomiswave does the same. I think that PC and console gaming should both follow the 4:3 ratio with pure RGB. Why should videogames follow the best TV standards? it doesn't make sense to me. Theatrical screen rations and TV broad-cast style black-and-white encoding, etc. make VGA all the more reasonable.

So does anyone know if VGA might be featured on any future consoles/arcades?

Well the reason it will be in 16:9 is due to the majority of HDTV's being widescreen. I would like to believe they will have an option for both 4:3 and 16:9 but I doubt the media will hold that much content.

With the PS2 the aspect ratio was the same but cropped to look like it was 16:9, I'm sure there will be VGA output of some kind, if not then there are already component to vga converters out there.

16:9 ratio screens are easier on my eyes. When you're sitting really close to the screen it just fills your field of vision better.

I've got an hdtv and playing game in high definition in 16:9 looks really nice. Even when sitting very close to the tv you get very sharp images and crisp detail. Its a little odd if the games aren't set up for 16:9 veiwing.

Widescreen images are more natural; They better conform to the way our eyes see. Not only are Televisions going widescreen, but computer displays are headed in that direction as well. Many games are much better in widescreen, though it isn't ideal for all applications. Vertical shooters, for instance, would be annoying if they were on a 9:16 display.

Play F-Zero GX widescreen in 480p (on the Gamecube, ironically), and you will see the difference. It is an amazing spectacle.

Actually, one of the first features about Revolution that was revealed was that it would hook to VGA monitors or TVs out of the box. I'm sure you can dig up the announcement on some news site, just look for the earliest Revolution tidbits. Keep in mind that is of course subject to change in a year or so, who knows.

But I agree, playing on an HDTV in Widescreen is not at all an unpleasent experience, it's quite satisfying actually, which is why a lot of newer PC games are supporting widescreen modes, such as Rome: Total War. HD compliant monitors are hitting the market and dropping in price. With some decent investment, you could run everything through your PC and get some absolutely wonderful performance out of it all. The differences between TVs and your computer monitor is slowly coming to one point. Just take a look at the widescreen HD Apple monitors, simply beautiful.

I think widescreen is an excellent way to do fighting games.

A wider screen gives you more distance between fighters, and I think this would allow for more strategy. Of course it's just speculation, but that's my hunch, anyway.

Nintendo has been hinting that their next console will be able to connect to a PC monitor.

The new r520 based ATI card is being developed to help decode H.264 HD videos. Flippin sweet!

widescreen>4:3

the only reason tv was 4:3 to begin with is because of manufacturing limits of picture tubes back in the day.
all picture tubes started off as being round then with improvement they got the screen to be more square hence 4:3.
then around the time of the sony wega they got the front of the tube flat.

now with the latest technology with crts and fixed pixel displays they can finally make the widescreen ratio
at an affordable price.

widescreen was made the way it is because of the way your eyes are set in your skull.
it is the most natural and the easiest to look at. over all it is 2nd nature.

play any game that supports widescreen on a true widescreen display and you will like the difference.
i know wide screen games started to come out back in the days of sega saturn(nights, xmas nights, panzer dragoon zwei). the luck japanese had these sets way before we did.

LOL sega saturn supported widescreen back in the day nintendo has to be fucking retarded not to support it in their next system.

some other awesome widescreen games
golden eye(plus a handful of other n64 games), halo2, outrun2, panzer dragoon orta, god of war, any xbox doa, ace combat 4+5, gta, many xbox games and some ps2 games

i hope all the pissing and moaning does not start in this thread like the last revolution thread i started.

Not many. The 46" Samsung LCD does. *drool*

The first TV to display 1080p was the Toshiba LCoS, which ironically wouldn't accept a 1080p signal; It would only upscale to 1080p.

The new Sony Qualia SXRD 70" monitor as well supports 1080p. I auditioned it at the local tweeter here. It's quite fantastic even with lower-rez stuff. At $13,000 though, it's a little on the pricey side, but as with most consumer electronics, a little patience down the road will see that price drop.

Well, there does seem to be an industry-wide push to provide whatever HDTV support they can. The idea is to make HDTV the new standard. There's quite a few players pushing it, which does have some advantages. For one, it'll insure that the price of HDTVs come down eventually making them affordable to just about anybody. If the trend of price drops continue as they have been, then I'll say that it wont be long before I make a personal jump to the standard. If you asked me a couple of years ago, I had very little access to HTDV at all. Now, it's like every other person I know has a set.

Normally, I wouldn't think too much about widescreen, but oddly enough it was people like Sega that made me a believer. Outrun 2 in widescreen is a great experience, if you ask me. DOA even benefits a lot from that look, but not as much as Outrun 2. It would be neat to see fighting games work that way because they'll gain the extra screen width with which to work with. I'm also hoping this will finally bring back collections of great side scrollers that normally would have features cut (like taking out 4-player support for a 2-player version) because they're forced to 4:3 aspect ratio. Bring on the Capcom 4-player sidescrollers, etc. They really need to make a wide-screen supported best-of collection out.

Fun fact:

Widescreen actually gives you less viewing area than a traditional set "of the same size".

For instance a 36" set, a 36" 4:3 TV gives you more viewing area than a 16:9 36" set.

Of course widescreen is much more natural to look at since that's what our field of vision is in. It's also what everyone is moving towards supporting, and as I'll demonstrate for console games, it's actually quite useful.

It also makes things a lot nicer in fighters or FPS games since you actually get to see "more" of the game since HDTV standards use horizontal lines (the height) as their basic standard.

Think of a FPS in 480p. At 4:3 the resolution rendered will be 640x480. Now lets look at the 16:9 set in 408p, it's rendering 854x480 for widescreen, so you actually get to see MORE of what's going on around you in the game. Needless to say this makes a big impact in FPS's where you want to see as much of your peripheral view as possible.
