I'm an idiot. What should I do?

About a hour ago I stepped over my ethernet wire running about oh say thigh high and my toe clipped it. Instead of stopping and trying to go over it, I went ahead and kept moving, which sent my Notebook flying to the floor.

So now my LCD screen is fucked up completely. Local guy told me $327.52 ($275 for the screen and $52.52 labor). HP Compaq said its under warranty and Fed Ex would come pick it up, but I would be charged something which they couldn't tell me. Monday I will call back when I can talk to someone without the Middle Eastern accent.

So what should I do? Just get it fixed by the guy here? Or go with HP and spend weeks without my PC?

I'm typing this with using a CRT monitor we had laying around and hooking it up to the Notebook. So it would be cool if I kept this up while the guy ordered my screen and I got it to him on the day he gets it.

If you can't afford the repairs right now....fuck it, stick with the CRT.

I don't have it right now, but I should have it within the next couple of weeks once my flood insurance money comes. So I would wait until then.

I think you will find that any implied warranty will be void for that kind of damage (its in the small print) acts of god and stuff. So bite the bullet

go with the cheap local guy.

i had a similar decision to make when i dropped a pair of scissors on the display of my powerbook causing a huge gouge in the lcd.

apple was going to charge $1100 to replace it.
private business was going to charge $600 to replace it.

i decided i could live with the scratch...maybe when prices go down when the next generation of powerbooks come out i'll replace it, until then, i can't afford it.

My dog took out my powerbook in a similar fashion. I had it on wireless for net, of course, but it's a fucking computer... and a powerbook, so like 3 hour life max. Doggy wanted to go out, I ignored him, he got all antsy and some how got wrapped up in the power cord. He freaked out and tugged, laptop went bye bye. I said I'd replace it, I never did... I just lived without. I'm cheap, but fuck it, $1,200 for a new notebook didn't really seem worth it (though I do miss it a lot :( )

Quick, to the time machine!

If I had a time machine I'd be like 75 right now :( Nick doesn't always make the best choices the first time.

Damn notebooks are a real problem I see. If I didn't need the portability I would go back to a desktop as it never let me down. Also glad I didn't bother with an Apple as that is very high to fix a screen.

"What should I do?"

Stop running Ethernet cables, and all cables in general, at 3 feet off the ground.

You'll find the prices won't go down much, if at all.

Shit, at some point you could probably get a used PB for the same price as the part alone.

Just get a badass 19" CRT.

I know it sounds that way, but I couldn't understand one damn word he said. I probably said what about 100 times in a 5 minute converstation. It's worse than when I called AOL once to tell them I want to cancel internet.

 It's hard to do when my wireless card doesn't work. So I said screw a router. Other than that I was just lazy and oblivious.

you can get screens for the titanium books for like $300. the aluminum displays are still hard to find though.
