Anyone else share this view? I like metal stuff more traditional, 9 out of 10 of these death metal groups sound the fucking same to me.
I got this children of bodom album and I realize the vocals for alot of these groups could mix tracks and they'd all sound the same to me, its like mainstream rap. Its a personal thing so dont bash me on it.

I like groups like judas, maiden, danzig, megadeth. Danzig is high on my list cause he would try new stuff, even if it wasnt well received, he isnt a broken record.

But most of the "ROAAAARR" vocals in this death metal shit are just fucking annoying to me now. No fucking joke, they all sound so much like each other I cant tell them apart unless I was told they were different groups.
A good example would be hatebreed, this shit is so hard I dont even know wtf is going on..

I actually would like some recommends of more traditional stuff, even fucking manowar has a few tracks I like and that group is ridiculous, least they got some personality.

Sabaton seemed kinda cool.

Any sites with reviews that cater to this weird demographic? I've been looking through groups to try to find new interests but I think death metal has taken a shitty turn cause even this underground shit is just not my thing.

Think ill grab helloween keeper of the seven keys p1/2 today..

Uhhh...yeah, Children of Bodom fucking blow. While I'm not really into any bands that sound anything like that, I do like some bands who do the screaming thing. For example I don't know where Pantera falls into your classification, but I consider them to be an incredibly diverse band.

I'm very touchy with my metal.. I dont know, I got exposed to christian death and alot of the goth shit and no joke, some of that is way more original then the piss that is/has become death metal.

Death metal to me is the worst broken record.

Like I was checking out guitar world and I liked this one song by lamb of god, then I go to preview some tracks and this shit sounds like a million others.

I don't share your view.

New death metal does tend to be on the stinky side, but I'm stuck in the early/mid 90s when it comes to DM.

Obituary (Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death)
Deicide (up to Serpents of the Light)
Napalm Death
Death
Suffocation

Lots of good stuff there.

I also tend to enjoy the good, yet severely under produced stuff, like Deicide's Amon album or Suffocation's Human Waste.

Everyone's musical preferences are different.

LWK, sorry but you have no clue what you're talking about. I have been a Death Metal fan for many years now, and I can assure you that the idea that "OMFG, all Death Metal bands are exactly the same" is as absurd as saying that all Heavy Metal bands are exactly the same, or that all rock bands are exactly the same. Nor is Death Metal a technically inferior genre.

Examples of excellent Death bands I love:

-Death
-Carcass
-Six Feet Under
-Cannibal Corpse

Now get some of their stuff and listen to it before making such posts again, if you *really* love metal, man. Some of their songs have such amazing guitar riffs that I am sure you will grow to like them, however much you may wanna bash them for their "ROARRRRRRR vocals" (which I love, btw.).

PS: Slerch666 - We have to team up against this Death Metal hater!

Children of Bodom fucking rock. Who needs to pay attention to the vocals? The music is 100% pure class. They sound like Dream Theater on PCP. Anybody can apply "it all sounds the same" to any genre, especially power metal (ie: Helloween, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Manowar, etc).

Hey Soulthug, too bad Metallica isn't metal anymore, eh?

Thank you very much Bob Rock, you fucking cunt.

edit: forgot to comment on the main post.

I'm not into death metal anymore. I was in 9th grade (92 or so) but I just cant listen to it anymore. I think the only DM album I have now is Scum by Napalm Death, but that's only because I like to play 'You Suffer' for my friends and make them laugh.

The song is like 2 seconds long. That rocks.

Wes is right though, you shouldn't have to pay attention to lyrics to like stuff. Par Examplay - Shadow's Fall. I think they suck hardcore, but they are exceedingly talented musicians. I just don't like their music, but their ability to play kicks ass. It's just not my type of music anymore.

Dude you didnt even read what I said.

Im talking about the groups with those fucking same vocals.

Vocals are damn important to me, I've had it with guitar reliance, I like a good balance.

Most of my fandom isnt into this screaming with a low nasty voice.
anyone can do that shit and thats why those groups are so plentiful.
Even some metal groups that shit gets tired. Some would say the same about maiden, but they just got a much better balance then alot of those groups.

I've been into the scene of scenes since I was fucking kid and this new wave of death metal is pissloaded with assbanging clones.

I can like a good death metal group if they try something new, but way to much of it is unappealing to me. Its not my genre. I can take criticism of people not liking the samhain/danzig or bauhaus shit.

Thats fine with me, but those groups offered something a little different.

You go ahead and try to team up against me...

Obituary are fucking great man. I got my first tattoo when I was 17 while I was on holidays in Argentina. the dude had a signed Obituary poster and I was like no way (they had played a short while back). the tattoo artist told me they had all come down and he had done some work on them. that was fucking great. this guy had great talent too.

anyway. Obituary are great.

I think bodom is really over rated. I liked it at first but that cd gets no listens to me, I cant even make out a partialty of alot of the vocals.
Vocals are important on the way they sound, lyrics are entirely seperate.

But we never agree on anything ever, so I wont fight about it.

Bodom is hardly overrated. Overrated? By whom? I hardly ever hear anybody talk about them. Bodom's vocals are good for what they do. If the vocals were any different then they'd sound like the other progressive rock bands. Hard vocals like that are an acquired taste for most people. Most people out there don't just hear something like this for the first time and like it. It takes a lot to get used to it. I was like this with In Flames for many years. I listened to them so much because the music was so fucking good. When something is that good it's foolish to cast it aside from one flaw one doesn't like. Whether you want to believe it or not, but no band is perfect. I can find things wrong in Iron Maiden, Danzig, Megadeth - you name it. There's a reason we listen to these things though - because they offer something worth listening to. Children of Bodom is no exception.

I like to stick to the earlier metal bands that you could say death metal sort of grew out of ;)

Early '80s Slayer
Early '80s Anthrax
Early '80s Metallica

Can anyone say Thrash Metal!!!

Also you gotta love the mid-to-late '80s KMFDM!!! :buttrock: 80's industrial was the best. New industrial just blows. Case-in-point MDFMK and new PIG stuff. bleh!!

cheers!

For me it depends on HOW they create the vocals. If they are relying totally on a VOX of some sort, then I'm a bit cautious. They can still sound good, but some of the bands (Cancer) seemed to rely on it as what "sold" the band. For me, Cancer wasn't much of anything but growly vocals and Cannibcal Corpse wanna be lyrics.

Chris Barnes going to the no-assistance vocals of Tomb of the Mutilated was fucking amazing. This was the first CC album where even if you followed with the lyric sheet, you were likely to get lost at some point and not be able to figure out where he is. However, when you could keep up, you could tell he was actually doing his job.

Glenn Benton, love his religious views or hate them, is equally as amazing.

There are shitty bands in every style of music. Perhaps you've just stumbled upon the shitty bands? Or it's just not your style. It happens.

Yeah thats the thing though, thats fine is someone else digs it, its just not my thing.

I wanna find some bands that try new stuff, I think thats where I am now. Its the same with hip hop, if you told me I'd be into it when I was 10 I would have laughed, but I like alot of the non phixion/necro stuff.

I might evolve to like this stuff, but I got alot of stuff to get out of my system first.

I don't totally hate it, I do hate those vocals tho, its not that the style is so bad, its that this bad ass guitar work is followed by these vocals that seems to me like shit I've heard a thousand times. I tend to dig the guitar work, but its just annoying to me when I am sampling like 10+ acts and the vocals sound identical but the bands are different. Even helloween, which I read is a maiden clone and I totally agree with that, I didnt buy that cd yet, but I'll probably grab it next time.

Vocals are VERY important to me, and especially in hip hop lyrics are. You cant get away with shit lyrics in the underground, lyrics mean fuck all in metal though because its more so about sound then concept.

BTW, I dont like bodom, probably never will like it like you guys do.

I'm real borderline with music, bodom just isnt for me, and it sucks more cause I wasnt knowledged and bought the cd before I bothered sampling anything.

The new reise reise rammstein cd fucking kills. So it really depends.

I think the raw power of old school death just puts some people off. For me to really enjoy something like that i need to put in some listening first. Unless you're totally sick of the genre you could check out Infestdeads "Hellfuck\Killing Christ". It's really like a parody on the genre and bands like Deicide, but its good clean fun and i laughed my ass off the first time i heard "Fucked by satan". Most hillarious 13 second song i ever heard.

Anyhow if its really not for you, you should still check out the more melodic stuff. Get Edge of sanitys "The spectral sorrows" & Cemetarys "Godless beauty". Give each three listen thrus & thank me later.

Edit; (And oh, dont attempt any of thease without the lyrics)

Its not that I cant get into it, I probably could if I invested the time. I'm just not in that direction now. I am fucking confused, when I think of death metal I think like the sabbath stuff and other stuff, either thats a different genre or the genre has changed so much it left me behind.

I came up into the scene when gnr was big and they kicked pretty hard for a more mainstream group.

I gotta say im digging days of purgatory right now, im still a poser when it comes to iced earth, I gotta check more of there stuff out, but I like guardian, so we'll see how this goes. Unfortunately I bought horror show first and its justified because the transylvania instrumental on that second disc owns so much.

IE is pretty hard for me, that other stuff is just so damn hard I get lost in the mix.

Gotta grab more maiden.

Finally a bit of sense amidst the seas of madness. Chris Barnes and Glenn Benton are indeed great.

@LWK - It's precisely the VOCALS that makes bands like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide so great...go listen to some of their classics and make the judgements AFTER you listen to it. All the supposedly Death Metal bands you are referring to are not even Death bands man. And pray listen to some Carcass if you want good guitars. Even better than Megadeth, and I DO love Megadeth.

I've heard good stuff of cannibal corpse and I havent heard either of those two groups.

They all sound the same to me, alot of fast noise with cloned vokes.

I dont think anyone but me sees it, I'd have to be a fan to enjoy this, but I like extreme variations, from blues to underground hip hop to metal, to even corny metal. But it wont make sense saying it to someone whos a fan of this.

Its like a thousand maiden clones, I dont need that shit.

Fuck it, I'll stick with the doors and early cure.

I already know someone is gonna find alot of metal groups with music links that share this view. But I love the different variations. Megadeth is alot different from the maiden sound, blind guardian is different from others.

thanks for the recommend man, but it falls into that same category to me =(

Also to add, amazon is full of fucking morons or something every damn cd gets near five stars.

I might just be a brit rocker in the closet. I'm getting some stone roses next. They seem like they really got it going on.
