I just watched it tonight with my fiance and it wasn't that good at all. I was actually kind of pumped up to see it, but halfway into the movie, both her and I lost intrest, but I kept watching it hoping it would get better. It didn't. Stay away from this piece of crap.

Oh. Ok. Thanks, man. I'll be sure to listen to your non-casual moviegoing opinion and not rewatch one of the best films to come out of Hollywood last year. I'll listen to you because you appear to have an impressively vast knowledge of film and film technique which you used to carefully weigh your final judgement. I'll listen to you, Jedah Doma, because you obviously know what the fuck makes up a good film.

Jedah Doma is wrong.

This is a fine Film. And Howard Hughes was an intriguing man.

Oh, my apologies for not giving my in depth review. I didn't realize that simple opinions didn't do around here. Next time I'll make sure to prove my movie l33tness (as you have just done in the above brilliant quote). So, just to entertain you, and to give you less to bitch about (because I know your life is one of misery and pain), AND I'll give you a litte more information on why I didn't like the movie.

For starters, it was well shoot, but characters were not well integrated nor explained. Many of the characters came in and were shown on screen without any sort of dialogue that gave you an idea what they had to do with the story or who they were (ex. the second "girlfriend" after Karen.

Although it was interesting to see Howard's trip into insanity, it was over done. Minutes of him speaking about mundane subjects and musing about sour milk. I understand that Martin was trying to get that point across, but there is beating a dead horse.

The filmed dragged at many points and had a hard time picking up. The ending and start of the film were equally as bad. It started off with a scene with him getting bathed by his mother, and boom, we're off to him making movies. Then at the end, he just repeats the same line "the way of the future" a couple dozen times, and there ya go, end of movie. Plus, who were those guys in white gloves coming towards hum at the end?

I liked Goodfellas and Gangs of New York. They were well directed and acted, but The Aviator just lost it. So many things weren't explained at all. I understand having some foreshadowing and mystery, but many ideas, characters, and scenes didn't make sense and made the movie fall apart.

Now, while I realize I could go even more in depth, I realize you'd still be an asshole about it, so I think I'll stop it here.

BTW: NEWFLASH: People can think movies suck. SPREAD THE NEWS.

Actually saw this one in the theaters twice... I wanted to see it, so I went with a buddy who came to visit me in VA before I moved back to LA. First week back in LA, friends here wanted to see it and asked me along... it's a 3+ hour movie and I didn't say no. Yeah, I guess you can say I thought it was pretty good. Not the most interesting time period of his life to capture on film, but a great ride none the less. Probably best Hollywood film I saw in 2004, or at least the one that stayed with me the longest... (2004 had some amazing releases though... so... heh... it's nowhere near the top of my favs of the year though).

I thought it was a great movie. It must have been a challenge to squeeze what was such a long and varied life on screen, but for me it was compelling and Leo DiCaprio was excellent as Howard Hughes. The plane crash scene in Beverly Hills was pretty fucking intense too, as was his slide into madness. I wanted to see it win Best Picture, just because Scorsese needs a fucking Oscar, badly.

Chris Rock put it best on Letterman last week..."OK, how much do Oscars really mean anyway? Martin Scorsese has none...Kevin Costner has TWO???"

I had no desire to see this film.

Well, I ended up watching it last night and was pleasently surprised. I honestly had no idea about who Howard Hughes was before seeing this film. Very interesting figure to say the least.

Highly recommended if you're the type to watch the History Channel from time to time like me. ;)

The Aviator did not suck. Leonado DiCaprio did a fantastic job and his performance alone was worth the price of admission (not to mention many awesome cameos like Jude Law, that bad guy from Spider man 1, Kate Beckinsale). It IS a long movie but what do you expect, Howard Hughes had a long and interesting life! :)

The movie didn't even touch on his later life... which is arguably way more interesting, but I guess Hollywood has done enough espionage movies for a while, heh... maybe a sequel?

just change the hot 15 yr olds to old slutty gutter hoes and money to dog shit

there'd be no planes either, but we could probably make some out of cardboard

Hah,

This was a fine movie.

Wasn't my favorite last year (of the best picture nominees, I prefered Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Finding Neverland), but it was definitely a top-10 movie.

Scorcese did an excellent job, but hats of to DiCaprio. After a few minutes I stopped noticing him, by the end I was thinking it was a different person altogether.

Dicaprio has some good talent, he played that OCD part really fucking well and you can tell he did his homework, that anxiety was spitfire on the money at times.

They got real comical with it when he had this milk scene and later the safety zones in his apt.

A solid movie, its cool the ending was just like 'thats it', no serious end to his life or other dramatic shit, just 'thats it'.

I watched the companion DVD with the extras... well, the History Channel segment of it anyways. Talks about his addiction to pain killers and his demise later in life leading up to his death. They should have touched more on his addicitons in the film to show how it probably caused his OCD from going over the edge after his one and a half month recovery in the hospital. Would have made more sense.

Oh, and after watching this and that little feature on him, I finally got the reference from that Simpsons episode where they get the casino in Springfield and Mr. Burns becomes a germaphobe. He is Howard Hughes. Spruce Moose. :tickled:

Well I haven't seen the Aviator, but that's exactly how I felt after trying to watch The Eye today. Damn, whatever Tom Cruise does with the remake has to be better than that piece of shit. The glory days of horror movies has definitely come and gone. :oh_no:

Looking forward to seeing The Aviator actually - I'll give anything by Scorsese a chance.

They'll end up giving him one of those honorary Oscars. The man has done a lot for the industry, both in his film making and in preserving it's history.

They continually thank him by slapping him in the face.

I'd just like to know what the Oscar board is made up of
