What is your average transfer rate when downloading. I used to go about 80K/sec but today we finally upgraded. Charter in my area now offers a higher speed service so now I am going about 450K/sec :)

I am curious to see if I am now finally around the average or still behind the curve ;p

Home: 3 MB/s.
Work: roughly 200-250 kbps. DSL sucks.

That's right. Ghetto-ass dial up

Out in the stix, there's no BB, unless you want to pay the monopolists for wireless $70/month or go Satellite which has epic $2000+ start up costs.

It does the job for me. All I do is browse message boards, post on blogs, and check out news occassionaly. Don't need a blazing fast connection for that.

Highest I've personally witnessed is 1.1mb/sec. That was once mind you.

Cox sucks.

Bandwidthplace.com claims I'm at 4.8mb/sec. Tell that to BitTorrent and Soulseek plz.

Where the fuck are also these 3-5 MB/s connection figures coming from???

That's like a T1 rate or something. I think you guys must mean 5 Mb/s.

Anyway, to address the actual question being asked by this thread, I usually get in the 4-500 KB/s. Sometimes it's a little sluggish during the daytime, but it usually doesn't drop below 300.

If you guys really are getting 5 MB/s, who the fuck is your provider?

I'm using Road Runner, and I've been pretty pleased with it over the past couple of years.

I too was shocked at the 3-5 MB a sec. That is crazy fucking fast. I wish I could go that fast. I imagine that type of service costs a shit load though.

Thanks for all the replies

My speed is up and down all the time. Tested it says I get roughly 1.2megs a second. But I've only gotten up to that once or twice, even surpassed it once getting about 2.1 megs a second.

For the most part, servers I download from seem to be slow. But I've had the occassional really fast download, and that is certainly a nice thing. Microsoft updates and so forth tend to have really good speeds for me.

You probably aren't going to get much out of things like bittorrent and soulseek because it's p2p stuff. More often than not, bittorrent has more leechers than seeders, cutting into bandwidth there. And people sharing on soulseek probably are downloading or uploading quite a bit in addition to your own download or upload.

From websites, HTTP downloads, Newsgroups, etc: 650k. From direct servers (i.e. Game patches, STEAM, etc) I get about 5 megs a second.

I can download an Xbox game in about 2 hours, depending on the size.

Also very surprised...

My Road Runner tops at about 600 kiloBYTES per second, and I thought that was pretty damned fast.

I could see the Europeans here topping the megabyte/s mark, but I didn't know anyone living in the US had a home connectiong going that fast o_O

That's about right. It's a 3 megabit connection, which is roughly 350 K/s or maybe a little more - but they almost always give you a best case scenario.

That's what I mean I am hard pressed to get that, most of the time its bogged down all day until night time.

I think some people are confusing their terms. I'm on a 3 megabit connection and the best i've ever downloaded at was near 350-360 Kilobytes/second. Usually around 330.

I have a 1.5Mbit up/ 384kbit down DSL connection. The speed never changes, it's just expensive.

Yeah, that's a downside about some cable connections - the speeds tend to vary quite a bit during the day. However, my cable connection is always faster than the DSL connection I had, even during peak hours.

In france we have DSL2 and high speed cable, that goes to 20Mbits/s.

Personaly i just have uncapped DSL and that s 8megabits/s because my building is not compatible (well, i tried dsl2 but it didn t work for over a month so i cancelled).

We soon will get power lines broadband that could go up to 100Mbits/s, but that ll be expensive.

btw, here, 20Mbits/s connexion is about $25/month

My max I have gotten is about 200 kilobytes/sec. That's the highest I've seen on my transfer speed.
