Nintendo has announced 3 acquisition methods:
pay-per-game via online payment
freebee via a revolution game
time-limited free demo

games will be stored on internal flash and can be saved on SD card and archived on your PC.

However, there will be copy protection and games will be encrypted for each console so unreadable from one another (making sharing impossible) via sdcard.

That's interesting, esp. the bit about the encryption- thanks for the news.

Do you have a link to the announcement?

I don't mind pay-per-game at all... just as long as it's not pay-per-play.

All of the downloadable cell phone games over here run on a pay-per-month system... that might be a possibility for the Revolution as well.

I'm betting on a one-time only DL fee though. Especially since it sounds like the games will be saved to the memory cards.

I have a question, can they even legally sell games with 3rd parties involved? SNES games like FF4 and chrono trigger, are they even gonna be included? I dont wanna be limited to just the entirely nintendo made games.

Sounds good and all, but I'd really like to have pre-paid cards I can buy at the local EB Games to use for downloads.

At the moment I believe they have just confirmed Nintendo-developed games. No word on third party games yet.

But getting no third party support on this feature would make this ROM feature pretty un-interesting.

The whole archival content sounds sweet! Just think if someone breaks the encription and figures out how to encript pc roms... Hello new xbox.

Yeah, encryption will likely be cracked sooner or later. But still, you have to pay for PSOne titles to play them on PS3, and you will have to pay for X-box games compatable with X-box 360 to play them, so it's not a big deal as long as they charge a reasonable price.

Charging a price also makes it more likely that third parties will want to get in on it, and since you can archive the games, you get to keep them. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

I also noticed that it was said that you could download Revolution software demos along with mention that Nintendo will make downloadable DS demos avaliable to home hotspots. Sounds cool.

My thoughts as well.

I mean, I guess most ppl already have unlimited access to the original or emulated versions of these games in one way or another, so it will take more than just the inhouse titles to get ppl to download and pay for stuff they can get for less.

ive come to realise that between the gamecube and gba player i already own all the nintendo classics

mario bros classic nes
mario bros, 2, 3, and world
classic nes zelda I, II
zelda link to the past
classic nes donkey kong
dk country
classic nes metroid, zero mission

cube
zelda, zelda II, oot, oot master quest, and majora

outside of super metroid and mario 64 i think that pretty much covers it. the rev downloads better be around $.99-$2.99 im not paying much more for a rom when i have multiple versions of the same game laying around.

As long as I can grab Super Mario RPG, it makes for a wonderful feature.

Keep in mind that by charging a fee, Nintendo is much more likely to get some third party support for games, likely selective, however. Even so, Nintendo has a huge listing of great backlogged software that would make it a great feature either way, provided the prices are reasonable.

I've always looked at backwards compatability in a different light. You can get rid of your old console and not feel bad because all your games can be used of the new one. Or you don't feel like you wasted money.

And I think this news is pretty messed up. I don't want to pay for those games I really don't.

That was the first thing i thought. Its a Mario Title...so nintendo owns it right? Regardless of the fact it was Squaresoft developed, right?

This will make vintage game collecting a thing of the past.

Whey didn't they do this sooner? ROMS have been rampant for years. Good to see them finally addressing the issue.
