Attention New Yorkers--Especially those in Manhattan

Hello all,

I am going to be moving in NYC in August for my final year of school and I was wondering if some people who live in NYC (Manhattan especially) could give me some advice on where to look for housing. I know to check with my school for school housing, but I need to bring my dog and have the place for at least 2 years (after that I am planning on buying), so school housing probably won't do. Anybody have some suggestions on where to look and what are some decent places to live. Also (and I am sure this is an impossible question), what are the going rents for a decent 1 bedroom? It needs to be a place that is pet friendly and is at least decently clean. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

a one bedroom in manhattan is going to be at least $1700, you can find a studio for a bit less. if you go to brooklyn you can get a nice place for anywhere from $1200-$2000 depending on where your looking.

your best bet is to check newyork.craigslist.org under all the "no-fee" apts. and start looking right away. if your moving in august you literally need to start looking immediately, or else you might have to settle for a place that's less than ideal.

trendy/cool/youth oriented places in manhattan aka expensive:

lower east side/alphabet city
east village

in brooklyn:

williamsburg
east williamsburg
bushwick(gentrified areas)(this is where i live)
greenpoint

classier places in manhattan aka super expensive:

upper east
upper west
midtown
chelsea
harlem(the nice gentrified area)
soho

in brooklyn:

dumbo
carrol gardens
park slope
brooklyn heights

rough neighborhoods in manhattan aka affordable:

alphabet city
harlem
bronx(not technically manhattan, but who cares)

in brooklyn:

brownsville
bed-stuy
crown heights

i don't know anything about queens except it's a bitch to get to from brooklyn, so i almost never go there. some of my friends live there, and it's affordable, but they have to say they live in queens :emb:

your best bet is to find a roomate or four, because the more ways you split the rent the cheaper your rent is going to be, for example:

studio - $1200 = your rent: $1200
1 bedroom - $1500 = your rent: $1500
2 bedroom - $2000 = your rent: $1000
3 bedroom - $2500 = your rent: $833.33

etc., etc., etc...

these are just averages, but are pretty accurate as far as i can tell...

good luck man, living in nyc is worth the price of admission, but know what your about to get yourself into, it's expensive...

LOL, I love my $550 a month rent for my place in NY. Of course it's a house.

ok, if you're moving to NY, prepare to live meager. Unless you're shitting cash like an investment banker, the city is a brutal place. I like the upper west side under harlem as a place to live. It's not as dangerous as you might be told to believe. Very nice area.

The village is trash. The people in the village are fake. And it's filled with non-NYers.

If you want to party there, get a place near the meat packing district. No clue how it's managed to stay hot for so long in the NY nightlife. Usually places chill down and the scene switches elsewhere in 6~12 months, but it feels like that area is still hot.

Dorms aren't a bad idea for a semester, just so you can hunt for a better deal and talk to people in the area. Feel your way around.

Yikes.

Just seeing those prices gives me the chills. Westwood, Los Angeles was too much for me, I can't imagine how quick I'd haul ass in a place like NYC.

Is Alphabet City still considered a rough neighborhood? I thought it turned around, kinda like Hell's Kitchen.

And other places for the original poster that have good 'hoods but wont break you: Midwood and Sheepshead Bay (both in Brooklyn). Also Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge. None are considered trendy, but it's all good. Trendy 'hoods are defined by what in em , rather than who's in em (which is probably why Manhattan has no community feel).

yeah, i put alphabet city in the trendy list and in the "affordable" list, because there's nicer parts and still some not so nice places to live...

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great advice so far! I am definitely going to contact my school and see what's available. I just hope they have places that are pet friendly.

I went last summer to NYC, and I am getting there in a month aprox.

I stayed at the De Hirsch Residence, between E92 st and Lexington Ave. So, it´s in the Upper East Side, one of the most expensive areas in Manhattan.

Double Room goes for 300/week
Single Room goes for 360/week

You have Gym facilities, Kitchen and dinning room in each floor, swimming pool, library, wi-fi Internet, TV room, etc.

It is close to 96 and 86 Subway Stations, where you can get the Green Line for going downtown in a rush (it takes ya to Grand Central Station)

You have restaurants, EBGames, Circuit City, Best Buy, cinemas and Barnes and Nobles nearby. There are also a couple of big supermarkets and Pharmacy 2 blocks away.

Check it, mate

Very safe and nice, place.

Um... my 2 bedroom apartment is $650 a month ($325 between my roomate and I) and we have a living room, kitchen, dining room, fireplace, in-door patio, and we each have a bedroom and a bathroom. As well as a dishwasher, washer, dryer, fridge, stove, oven, tons of cabinets, walk-in closets, and access to a gym, pool, and tennis courts.

Yeah, it doesn't really get much better than Huntsville AL.

i had an opposite slip-up when i was looking for a place to live in london. it seems like europeans list everything per week where as americans list rent prices by month...
:kekeke:

i thought every place was an absolute bargain!

lol i love those pictures. why doesnt anybody look like me though? they are all happy and friendly in their little bunk beds and whatnot. so clean and sterile. laughing and joking and sharing the fridge prolly got stuff in tuperware with their names on it.

if i moved in and suddeny my segment of the building turned into what my room is now i would prolly be dead and in a dumpster b4 my week is up. plus i would steal everyones food out of the fridge and piss in their beds.

i pay my rent i do wtf i want. :very_ang:

thats badass a maid comes in and cleans the piss off the bathroom walls for you though.
