I was playing some hardcore B-mode (9-5, but with the next piece showing (soon I'll try it with 9-5 and no next piece showing)), and it hit me: this game is almost as old as I am, and there have been millions of subsequent versions, yet most gamers agree that this version of Tetris is the best. I can't deny that. But why? What just went so right? I can't put my finger on it.

I know this is sort of a weird topic, let's see where it goes :)

Edit: Well I beat B-Mode at its hardest blind, see below.

You can't improve on perfection... Everytime they try to add features or whatever to the series, they're just diluting it. Like when they tried to add an extra row of squares on Rubik's Cube...why bother?

But if you like black and white puzzle games for Gameboy, check out Pipe Dream. After all these years, still one of my favorites.

The ONLY thing that would have made that game perfect would be the ability to save high scores. That's pretty much it.

It's nice that there were no lucky breaks where you'd destroy a row and accidentally get a 500 chain 80 billion points. Everything is under your control. The only thing that could go wrong against your own control was not getting a certain piece to show up, but a really good player would always plan for that...

It's got to be the music that makes it THE version of Tetris. Timeless.... :buttrock:

Tetris DX on GBC is excellent too, but the music is seriously bad, what were they thinking??

I always loved the NES version of tetris the best, to be honest. GB Tetris was good, but NES was the shit!

The NES version i bought was the nintendo one and i had big big pains to find the rom of it; all i could find was a boring ass version while the nes version i like is rewarding (remember when you finish a mode B last mode ? mario, luigi, donkey, link, princess peach, AND KID ICARUS dancing and playing music with kremlin towers flying... and when doing lot of point in mode A, with finaly the kremlin departing from Baykhonour instead of shuttles/saucer...man that was the best ).

Oh man, kinda OT... I was trying B-mode (9-5) but WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE THE NEXT PIECE.

With the cat on my lap I played for nearly an hour, most I did was 12 lines total (13 left).

Insanity. I must beat it like that.

OT Again: Well now I have my GB Light paused right as line 25, game B, 9-5, no next piece showing, is completed. Well I'll be damned. I decided to play a little before bed (tried for 15 minutes) and allready I have sore thumbs.

There goes the Russian band...

Rocket ship takes off...

CONGRATULATIONS!

Single : 17 x 400=6300
Double : 4 x 1000=4000
----
----
Drops : 184
This stage: 10984

NOW YOU TRY IT! This is the most challenging Tetris of my life.

Pac Man>Tetris.
Pacman was only made portable in 1999 though, so tetris had a decade advantage.

But i still fucking love tetris, it is one of the most addictive games of all time :buttrock:

Fucking Tetris. :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

This game owns a large portion of my childhood.

Comeone everyone, let's get tetris blocks tatooed on our ass.

No? Ok.

Tetris DX wins, solely because of the ability to save high scores, and the wacky 'endings', although I do miss the charming Russian tunes. The older GB Tetris just plays too slowly, it gets very tough to manipulate the blocks at high levels.

Other honorable mentions include the SuperNES Tetris/Dr. Mario cartridge, the Atari coin-op (and subsequently banned Tengen NES port), and the greatest sleeper of them all, Tetris Battle Gaiden on the Super Famicom.

Try this code for the GB Tetris and feel the pain.

Play with faster game level speeds

When you get to the main screen, press the DOWN ARROW key while pressing the START key to begin the game. You will play with levels faster by 10 levels, which means that Level 1 = Level 11, Level 2 = Level 12, and so on.

:crying:

it all ends here ---/\

It was simple, humble and had only 4 hues of B&W. It was included in the GB box. It had the best music of any tetris game ever. Played beautifully...
