Gunstar Heroes on Genesis: Still one of the badest ass games ever made

I just beat Gunstar Heroes for the first time in about 8 years, and I still thought it was incredible. Even to this day, the graphics are great, as is the sound and action. Anyone that's never played this game should be shot. Go out and play it 'till the end. What an incredible game. I almost forgot how you watch yourself fight at the end, only to get to the room you're in to do battle with the last boss. Everything about this game is great. I can't believe they pushed the poor little Genesis so well! Hands down the reason to own a Genesis.

I remember buying this a long while ago for the second time in Toys R Us. It was like 9 dollars, and when you opened it up, it came with a free Fruit Rollup, too. Like, they couldn't give the game away. What a dirty shame that one of THE best games ever made in the 16-bit era was so little known. Truly the definintion of a sleeper hit.

hehe...

Ironically... I was saying the exact same thing to NEO GOLD when he came over on Thursday...

Gunstar Heroes is a class shooter... I think better than the sequel Alien Soldier... the only thing that detracts from it I feel is the loss of pixels sometimes when the action gets a bit frantic....

Still... it blew my mind away when I first played it and showed that there was still life in the Megadrive!

CLASS! :buttrock:

Btw. My bro is selling a GENESIS Gunstar Heroes... along with lots of other stuff!!

My Bro's Auctions... Shameless plug!

Back in 1995 I got to the point where I could beat it on Normal with only 3 guys and on hard wiht about 8.

I played the tar outta this one.

Diehard Gamefan was so sure that it was going to be awesome that I went and paid 49.99 the day it was released.

Worth every penny.

Gunstar Heros>Contra Hardcorps

Any ways my favorite "run'n gun" games on the Genesis in that order.

Heh, funny how MilkMan and I were discussing this very thing yesterday.
Of course, it's to be expected with a lot of us Treasure faithful eagerly awaiting Gunstar Super Heroes. Hope it's dope!

Never was a BIG fan of GH, but I did like it. Great fun game.

But the best run n gunner on the Genney, without a doubt, is Contra: Hard Corps...

I'm sorry man, but Contra: HC doesn't even hold a candle to Gunstar Heroes. GH had much better sound, a better gameplay engine, and better style. Contra: HC was fun, but it felt more like a poor man's Contra. When you've got Contra 3 on SNES, this one isn't bad, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as Contra 3. GH was in a league of its' own.

IMO of course.

GH single handedly made the Genesis compete against the SNES, just with all the things it pulled off. Mode 7 on a Genesis? Yeah right....

One of the most overrated game of all time next to Radiant Silvergun.

Yeah, but the thing I love about Hard Corps is the goddamned insanity of it all...definitely just one of the craziest run 'n gunners I've played. 5 minutes into the game you see an amazing graphical boss jumping across the ruins of the cities and starts chucking cars at you. Sure, that mini-boss was easy to beat, but everything about that one mini-boss and all the others is so crazy and so fun.

Not to mention the availability to select characters, each with their own attributes and weaknesses (carrying over from Contra Force).

Besides, Browny's the man.

Oh man, I disagree. Just the overall look and layout of the game alone deserves high praise. The universe they pull off seems real. The levels are fun, the explosions and action is high. There's humor, great grahpics, great gameplay (slide kicks, fly kicks, tackles, blocking, throwing, and don't forget: the great guns and gun combos). HOW can you say it's over rated when nobody even knows about the game?

That's like saying FF7 is under rated. :annoyed:

Dont forget the now Treasure classic 16-bit multi-sprite bosses!

When I first saw that shit I was floored.

Gunstar Heroes is badass.

The amount of in-game gameplay options is what really makes the game stand out above the rest.

All of the gun combinations, various attacks, defensive maneuvers and the ability to choose between 8-way shooting or 4-way with run & shoot makes for a very diverse game each time you play it.

Everything else about the game is stellar as well, and while it's obviously a subjective subject, I'd certainly not consider it to be overrated -- not in the slighest.

Haven't played my copy in a while, I'll have to pop it in when I get home later.

Hmmm, could it be the fact that the game is 10+years old?

Gunstar is a great game all around, I think it's too bad its sequel is for GBA though... I'd like an arcade Gunstar.

I'll have to throw my hat in with BIG on this one. I was never really impressed with Gunstar Heroes other than from a technical standpoint. Great graphics for the Genesis but I never found it much fun to play.

I wasn't even sure if I had a Gunstar Heroes. Once I saw the name of this thread, I dug around and found two buried away. Go figure.

nah it's good but not the one the greatest games ever imo

just wish it were longer of maybe if it had alternative routes or something when you first play it, it is amazing but after a while meh just doesn't grab you by the balls like it should :spock:

Gunstar Heroes is the best home run n gun game ever developed; except for the Metal Slug series of course.

The game is timeless.

Well, I got to play a little bit of Gunstar Super Heroes recently at e3, and it's a must have. I don't even have a GBA, but my buddy Zach is giving me his old butchered unit (he installed an afterburner in it, didn't go so well... but I don't care) so I can play it. Really really good stuff, I can't wait to grab this one.

The original got tons of play on the Genesis, but honestly it's been so long I barely remember the game. Can't wait for the sequel.
