If so, any tips? What national chains are best? What are your best/coolest finds? Any cool stories?

I'm planning to make it a new summer hobby, I'd like to dive at cell phone stores so I can sell old phones on eBay. My dream would be to find some cool electronics/gadgets. Maybe another laptop or a RGB-compatible C64 monitor...

So far I've gotten some stuff from a Hollywood Video, which is lots of DVD, PS2, and GCN cases (LET ME KNOW if you want any), and some packing material. They had, oh, about 400 VHS "squeeze boxes" last time (guess they're making room for DVDs), and if y'all would like some let me know and I'll keep an eye out for them next time I go.

Damn, I'm frugal.

This may sound odd, but just let me know if you find the corpse of a middle-aged Italian person with slicked back hair. His identity or how he ended up there shouldn't concern you, but if you could retrieve the otherwise exposed body I'll send some people over to pick him up from you and leave you a reasonable "finders fee" before they make sure he's duly relocated. Oh, and we'd prefer to keep the authorities or any other inquiring parties out of it. If you can do that last part we'll double the finders fee. In the meantime, you may want to get a piece for protection until we can send people to you for pick up.

Ill take a GC one for this Pac-Man VS so I can get a proper case for it instead of the normal DVD one I have. Shit a few PS2 ones would be cool too.

And how many DVD cases have we found?
DVD cases? I think about 50, not so sure. Generic cases.

Maybe 200 cases total.

EDIT: oh yeah I have about 25 clamshell VHS cases with the plastic for an insert.

Interesting. I'd be worried about the police catching me if I was to try that kinda stuff. It's something I wouldn't mind doing if I knew the cops never check a certain area.

Damn, I'm frugal.

NOTE: there is a guy over at DP that likes to buy up the GCN cases.
Forget who it is but a thread over there in selling might find him..

My Best Find is the Playstation Display Unit I got that was on the side of a Gamestop Dumpster(no TV)..It's in storage because I have no room for it here.
It's either that or one of the Arcade machines.....

Thing is:..It's not me doing the dumpster diving, though I have..It's my Uncle in his van..he works nights, and checks the Gamestore dumpsters early in the morning.
He'll call me and ask if I want what he's found and sometimes to ask what to and not take....In all the times he's been doing it he's acquired lots of stuff...(Some is here, some is in storage or his apt)
So when he said Playstation Display Unit ..I said "Oh Yea"..I want it...I really thought he was pulling my leg until he described it..
He came here with it in the van,I took a peek at it and off to the shared storage bin it went.
When I move I'll set it up/bring it home...I'm in no rush.
..................He's in it for the thrill IMO... and I'm not complaining..I think after he found a bunch of Good complete DC games in a EB bin he was hooked.
He's kept a few cool things that I didn't ask for as I'm not greedy...he's doing the diving..

Other cool stuff found is a 20 inch TV VCR-Combo that must of been used in Gamestop as it still had the "January 2004 Gamestop VCR tape inside.
The TV has nothing wrong with it,just no remote..It's mint..It's in my kitchen being used.

Pelican System Selector(the $100.00 one)..It had a small dent on top so they must of chucked it because of that,in it's box..
That's what I currently use..

Xbox Real Arcade stick with a broken joystick..I'm still working on making it work for AES,got all the stuff to do it but lazy to get to it.

The most thing I have here is a big box of Gamestore Game inserts..Promotional stuff..Some of the games inserts are different from the released versions so it's cool to compare..
Just a bunch of stuff you'd find in the store like NGPC Combo Pack Display Sheets.
Everytime I look in the box I find something else neat to check out..

My uncle's found everything from Xbox,GC,PS2,PS,DC,GBC (1 GBA) Games/Steering Wheels(a whole pile) Light Guns,Lots of store displays(small and large) like for instance I know that latest released Final Fantasy games' large store display is sitting in the storage bin./...Magazines,link cables,Controllers, crap and lots of empty game cases..

With the large store game displays (cardboard) he came here one day and asked if I wanted to take any to display, and since he had so many I only grabbed 2.... as they are to damn big and take up so much room..(Into storage)
Honestly, some stuff I just don't want ..and I don't want to pile stuff up here,I have enpugh of it hanging on the walls now..

I don't feel like posting at DP, at least not now. Anyhow, great stuff. I know that at least two gamestops near here have their dumpsters locked up at night so that's no good, but I'd still like to try some of the other ones.

I could use a new Xbox case for my copy of Ninja Gaiden. Those fekkers at EB sliced right through the plastic on the front. :oh_no:

I actually have three X-box cases, huh. Forgot about them.

OK, guys who want cases: They range from about a 6.5/10 to a 10/10 condition. I'll try my best to only send out the good-looking ones. Remember that these were rental and display cases and some of them have stickers on them (they can be removed with a solvent or heat I assume; I've allready removed some with just my fingernails). Determine how many cases you need, and PM me with an offer+shipping. Trades are welcome.

Yeah Hollywood gets extra DVD cases/Inserts...

Rememeber that they print thier own Cases for games.

It's really cool ifyou work at a hollywood. You can grab the extra DVD inserts and cases, take out the DVD for free and Burn a copy to put in a nice case.

I have a vague recollection of this dialogue... was it from Guy Ritchie's Snatch?

No reference. It would just be funny to have the same clerks react to what would initially be considered an odd occurance as though it were a regular problem.

In this post-modern age it is still possible to make jokes that do not reference other things. ;)

Please remember to keep be posted regarding the body.

Damm, I would like to get, like, 30 or more of those VHS squeeze boxes. Unfortunately, shipping would be a pain in the ass and I don't have the cash-on-hand (because I'm a broke-ass motherfucker right now).

If I see some next time I'll grab a bunch. I only have three on hand (souveniers). They are lightweight but they do take up a lot of room. I can hold them for you for a bit I guess.

BTW I am yet to receive any PMs...

Have a Klonoa 2 ps2 case by any chance?
Maybe... maybe later in the week if I have a lot of free time I can go through and see what-all I have, but I'd honestly rather just sell cases as they are. Since people seem to be requesting specific games though, I guess it would be worth my time.

OK, y'all. I went through and made a list of the inserts and manuals that are on their own (as in the cases were in too poor a condition to keep). I guess I'll go through the cases and pull out their inserts and manuals and list them too. I guess since no one would want to buy a case in bad shape, I'll only try and leave those in 7/10 condition or better. Expect, in the near future, a thread in Everything Else with my list on it (I'll bump this when that happens).

MEANWHILE!!!! If you want bare cases (just the thing you put your game in, not the inserts and manuals), PM me right away!

Update!
1.) Only haul today was the accessories for a Treo 650 at the Sprint Store. I will keep this store "in the route" as there might be other goodies in there later on in the summer (we pretty much scrutinized it). Funny thing, the alley faces a parking lot which a McDonalds feeds into. These teens drive by, and we hear "GET A HOUSE!" "DOOOUBLE CHEEEEESBURGER!" and they speed off laughing. LOFL they thought we were homeless and I guess were taunting us with food. Anyhow I have all the stuff that comes with the Treo (except for the unit itself and the earpiece that I kept for my phone) if someone wants. Man, we got so excited when we realized how heavy that box was...

2.) Went to Hollywood Video/GameCrazy, and they had a whole load of stuff in the dumpster, filled to the gills. We found a bag of used shoes (!?) and a new-looking stroller but looked past that to see the stuff we'd want... as my brother was lifting the "The Incredibles" display to get at what was underneath, I noticed a LARGE RED WASP walking around on it between these two pieces of cardboard! Yipes! We got outta there.

3.) Radio Shack was a disappointment. Only thing of interest was a broken coaxial cable.

4.) The one GameStop we went near, the dumpster was too out in the open to dive in. Plus that parking lot has cameras in it (we only drove around though). No dice on that particular one, but there's like 7 game stores near us (including Gamecrazies) so we could find other stuff.

5.) A used book store HAD A WHOLE CRAPLOAD OF BOOKS THEY WERE THROWING OUT. Old encyclopedias and bags of books. They have said they have too much supply/not enough demand, but the fact that these bags of books were in there means that they were offering customers dirt for books, picking out what's good, and throwing the rest away. We didn't see anything worth keeping (that we could get to, the dumpster went deep and it was filled up high), woulda been nice to have found some por-----natomy, yeah some anatomy magazines :P ;).

Well, I can't think of anything I need. I've made out pretty well with things in that regard. However, I find it odd that someone would need to be concerned with dumpster diving (aside from public appearance). I mean, why on earth would it be illegal to take someones trash. They obviously don't want it anymore.
