A friend and I want to start a new website, mainly for ng pocket games.

It'll most likely have scans of the cover/back art along with misc information for US/JPN/UK releases and a review section.

Question is: I know I have to register a domain/URL whatever and that doesn't cost much.

How much can I expect to pay for a year/6 months?

How is this charged relative to what I upload, how many times the site is accessed ect? Am I charged for bandwidth?

Are some companies better than others? I'd like the most reliable/best service available.

I'm a total noob at starting websites, any help would be appreciated. :)

You can register the URL you want at godaddy.com. I think it's something like $8 a year. Then you find a place you want to do all the hosting. A place I got allows me 100gb of transfer a month, and was $59.99 a year if I remember correctly (I'm going to have to renew in November) and gave me 5gb of space. I never went over my monthly allowance, until last month when I hosted around 4gb of Third Strike videos. After you go over your monthly allowance, your site just becomes inactive, unless you want them to reactivate it but I'm pretty sure you have to pay them. When my site went offline I only had a day left until the new month started (so all transfer status resets) so I didn't find it necessary to pay for a couple more days. So you aren't charged anything extra after your initial purchases of the domain name and the hosting plan, unless you opt for it.

Ah, sweet. That's not expensive at all imo.

What is a good place to have host my site?

That's what I'm using. However, I don't see them offering the plan I'm currently on. Maybe they got rid of it? I don't know. There's still a variety of plans you can chose from, so get the one best for you.

I think the URL reg is free if you sign up for a year. I also think you get 2 free months if you sign up for a year.

5gb storage, 300gb transfer a month (10gb a day)

A little downtime once in awhile, but nothing major.

$7.77 a month

Wait a minute, the plan I'm on is still there. It's the OC5 package. If that's something you're interested in. Depending on how big and how much traffic you think you'll get from your site, you may want something smaller.

I've ordered Chosen One to learn HTML, so I have a whipping boy to do my grunt work. He'll be doing all the scanning ect and I'll take all the glory. We've pretty much decided on a URL.

Thanks a bunch. With the devil's luck we might have a site before OVGE this year.

Threads fall to the bottom too quickly in Unrelated :)

I'm checking out those hosting sites, as we're making fair progress, but I'm not sure how much size it'll take up. I haven't started scanning yet, but I'm shooting for Front and Back scans of the games as well as a good chunk of accessories, flyers, box sets and whatnot. Given the number of games alone I'm guessing this could be rather large.
