I went to buy a 512 flash memory thing and I said, "fuck it", a shuffle is only a bit more

now I'm thinking, "fuck it, I should just go all out and get a mini"

I'm pretty sure a week from now I'll go "fuck it, ipods are mainstream"

I have one of those Creative Nomad MUVO 128MB as well as my PSP, but I haven't felt like buying a bigger memory stick. I'd probably rather have a HD based one though. To put many more songs on it. As is I can only hold about 1 CD. So I would get a Mini if you listen to a lot of music.

I don't know why I bother sometimes

I think I just get bored and feel like I have to spend money and shit

with that said, I'll probably open it tomorrow

My cel has a 1 GIG SD card on it, I rip all my albums at high bitrates (VBR floored at 192kbps... usually average 270kbps)... and I can fit about 12 albums on my phone, give or take. It's plenty of music for me, and honestly I like to rotate a lot, so no need to have 4 gigs of dead music on the machine I'm not listening to. Honestly, 1GIG of space is perfectly fine for me. I don't know what your habits are, but if want to have a ton of music on the go, go get the 4GIG mini... otherwise maybe just upgrade the shuffle to 1GIG? My only complaint on the shuffle is the lack of a screen and I don't really ever listen to stuff random, if I want to listen to an album I listen to it all the way through. Meh, my 1 GIG SD card in my phone is fine for me ;)

I like the Samsung 1 gig flash player for 200 (smaller than the mini and color screen)

but it accepts only WMA (and mp3), and I've ripped most of my albums from itunes with loseloss and AAC (is that the right term?)

I'd just go with a mini. The Shuffle strikes me as a bit gay.

I'd go ahead and open it then. Especially if you walk alot or something. MP3's made the trips to class so not boring.

you can put the switch on "not shufflle" instead of "shuffle" to listen to an abum all the way thru.

Now, out of the 12 albums on it, I want to listen to the new Gorillaz album... how do I find it?

Seriously?

The whole reason I was thinking about not getting a shuffle was because randomly listening to tracks is retarded, like others i'd like to listen to an album all the way through.

I'd stick with the shuffle, personally.

The i-pod's are cool and all, but all hard drives are shock sensitive to some extent. And since the whole point of these things is portability, it just doesn't make sense to me to choose something that's not extremely resilient. Whenever I'm running on the treadmill or working out is when I most need some music, and with a regular i-pod I'd be afraid I might eventually screw up the hard drive.

I drive with my iPod hooked up and take bumps, haven't had a problem yet.

Hard drives are sensitive to 6G's for laptops, im sure Apple took that into consideration and made the ipod's drive to the same level of quality.

With flash ram you have a max of 1,000,000 write cycles which depending on how often you change out your songs, the shuffle can be completley dead within a year, I have seen some flash drives die quicker.

I was also thinking about a shuffle... Pretty sure the usb cap will be lost within 3mins of purchase. Also there are rumors that a new ipod incarnation will show up this summer, possibly a video player. The new iTunes just added support for video playback and ogg vorbis audio format...

:spock: care to explain? I've seen most flash drives last longer than a year, and there are only 365 days a year.

One would have to write songs to the iPod shuffle an average of 3,000 times a day to exhaust the write cycles. While manufacturers do not advertise the maximum number of write cycles, I've seen estimates of anywhere from 1 million to 3 million write cycles.

The Shuffle is a generic player (not that there's anything wrong with that), but for a few bucks more you can get another flash player with more bells and whistles.

I've been a critic of Apple's players since day one, but I have to admit that their wheel is a great interface. The Shuffle's lacking, IMO.

Yeah, I didn't understand that either.

1000000/365 = 2740

And that's assuming you change out the songs every day, which I doubt most people do. For active people, I still think that flash memory-based devices have a significant advantage over those that are HD-based.

i use my shuffle when i'm skateboarding. my buddy uses his when he's at the gym. they're perfect to use while you're doing any sort of physical activity. the regular ipods harddrives can get damaged easily if you're constantly shaking them about...

ipod shuffle is great. yeah, i'm an apple whore, but i love mine...

My fiancee bought me a Shuffle from Circuit City. It was cool until I wanted to listen to a specific song. Try skipping through a couple hundred songs to find the one you want. It sucks.

The Shuffle is perfect for working out though. It weighs next to nothing, and if you're content to set up a playlist beforehand and just let it play, it's fine.

We took the Shuffle back and exchanged it for a Mini, which is only a bit more. Very pleased with it, though I already find myself wishing for more storage space because I rip at such high bitrates.
