Well I can shave $189 off the price right away.

That video card you picked out, the X600 All in Wonder is PCI-Express based and that mobo you picked out only has a AGP slot for the video. So, that ain't gonna work.

Might want to go back and pick out a card that is AGP based or a different motherboard.

Edit: Shit, the other Mobo I had picked out had PCI-E on it, guess I didnt double check that.

Recomendations on the video card then?

Maybe the ATI 9600 All in Wonder ?

Or spend a couple more dollars and just get a PCI-E based motherboard.

Whats the point of getting an All in Wonder and a seperate TV Tuner?

(feh, nevermind........)

So either I get an All in Wonder OR go with a seperate Tuner and Video card.

Which one would be cheaper/better?

(thanks gamejunkie)

Current Price = 695.

The HD I can probably get cheaper since I have hook ups at BestBuy. (if I had cash Id buy one of those from Staples right now). Anything else I could possibly Tweak?

I can recommend Biostar to the fullest! I have (had) a 1.2ghz thunderbird machine that I swear ran 4 fucking years straight without taking a break! It recently overheated and died... but it took 4 years!

Anything from ASUS, Abit, ECS, Gigabyte, DFI all make great boards. On the other hand I can't recommend MSI, I've had nothing but problems with the 754 board I have now...

Don't go PCI-E unless you're going super highend.

Don't get an All-in-wonder. Get a seperate video card and seperate capture card.

Do you want to play games and capture tv? Or do you just want to capture tv? Would you be cool with getting a slow card for the time being and upgrading in a couple months?

Well enough to play like GBA and SNES and shit would be good, but I know that a TNT2 can pull that kind of thing off without much lag.

So something mid range with Video Out would be what I need.

What kind of tv do you have? Does it accept anything between 480i -> 1080i through component? If so I recommend maybe a 9600 series ATi card with this adaptor. Or a 9800 series card with this adaptor. These are very slick, I have the dvi and a 9800 pro that works very nicely. I've played Doom 3 on my 49" hd set... freaking sweet!

I'm not trying to plug myself or anything, but I'm about to throw my 9800 pro up on ebay. I expect it to pull somewhere around $120 in. Here's a sex shot:

Whats with the fan? My 9800 already takes up the space of a PCI slot, why the hell would I want it to take up even more space (and make more noise).

Something less than 100 would be nice. I was looking at the 7000 series and stuff.

The fan helps cool the dual heat sinks that are connected with a heat pipe. The fan sticks out past where a pci card would go, so you could put a card in the 2nd pci slot. If you're looking in the 7000 series onboard video might be sufficant.

Thats a good idea, could just get a VGA to RCA converter and go from there. Good call.

Also I think you should step upto some name brand ram... My preference is Corsair. You can get 2x512mb value strips for $77. I know this is a bit of a price jump from the buffalo 512mb strip, but since you're video capturing I'm sure you'll be doing some video converting and that is a very cpu intensive process which would benefit from more ram.

Sigh. Again, there are TWO 512 sticks in that thing. Not just one. (the Buffalo is coincidentally 2 dollars cheaper than the Corsair). (I Would have gotten Mushkin, but its kind of expensive).

Oh sorry my bad. I think I would still buy name brand. That Corsair set has 338 reviews and is rated 5 stars.

I wouldn't recommend a Maxtor drive.

I would normally agree with you, but I have a 250gb Maxtor that's been going strong for 2yrs being frequently transported to and from lan parties. Plus $70 for a 250gb drive!
