My wife and I noticed we have Stray Cats living under our house. We are in the process of getting rid of them. (Humane Society/Animal Control) Well we noticed some Fleas in our Bedroom. We don't own any pets, so we are assuming they are coming from outside. Is there anyway we can get rid of them, without bombing the inside of the house. We have a 1 Year old and 8 Year old at home, so we don't want to bomb the house unless we absolutly have to. The 1 year old crawls everywhere. Anyone know of any alternatives to get rid of fleas? We heard of spreading Borax around the house. But them we would have to let it sit for a day or two. Kind of a pain when you have kids. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks!

i only had to deal with fleas for 1 season thank god, they lived through bug bombs, carpet powder, the traps, and whatever else i could find at the time.

in your case i would buy a bunch of sonic bug repellers. since i put those all around the house i havent seen a bug upstairs. however, they dont seem to work in the basement for some reason.

good luck

I found a stray kitten one time, and brought her in my apartment for over a day until I could get the shelter to take her.

Had fleas in the apartment for just over a week. They died off on their own. But I also used carpet flea powder too...

good luck

Kill the cats one at a time while the fleas watch, they will then be so scared to die that they will just leave

I don't see the humor in your suggestion.

Fumigate every room in your house simultaneously. I usually use Raid or ACE Hardware brand. Be sure to follow the directions exactly (pulling up covers, opening as much surface area to air as possible, opening drawers, etc.).

You'll need to fumigate again 2 weeks later. The problem is that fleas will lay eggs and the fumigation won't kill the eggs.

The fumigation stuff itself is non-toxic (made from distilled flowers, essentially), though you'll need to leave your house for 4-10 hours (depending on the product and how thorough a job you want to do). If you want to make sure you kill everything, it'd better to start it in the morning and come back in the evening/night. You'll also kill any spiders, termites, etc. :D It's pretty neat--it essentially shuts down their nervous system, killing them immediately. Humans are too large to be affected by this stuff, though the fumes will cause irritation and give you a headache.

EDIT: Hmm, noticed that you said you didn't want to bomb the house. I'm assuming you mean fumigation. Honestly, I think fumigation would be a lot safer than spraying bug spray all around the house, especially given that young kids like to taste things. If I were you, I'd just have a family outing, set the fumigation after everyone leaves the house, come back, open all the windows (takes about 30 minutes to air out) then go get dinner or something before coming back. It's about as all-natural as you can get without lighting your house on fire or setting a farm of ladybugs free.

look. there are different types of fleas and it really depends on which you have at home. there are human fleas and dog and cat fleas. human fleas feed off human blood, they are contracted from other humans - whilst animal fleas feed off the blood of cats and dogs and don't like human blood (they may bite once or twice but if there are no pets then they will leave or die).

so your best bet is to get rid of these cats. the fleas will go too. no need for any poison or anything of the sort. unless they are human fleas, in which case you will have to fumigate, and they are a real pain.

It's never easy to say this, but you're going to have to burn down your house and start over in a new community.

(make sure the house is insured first, remove any irreplaceable belongings, and be sure to take pictures of the rooms for the insurance company).

To get rid of the cats, use the microwave (anyone who visits unrelated should remember the story from a week or 2 ago).

Thanks,

The fumigation sounds good, since the stuff is supposedly non-toxic.

I've had good results with this:
http://www.killsbugsdead.com/fop_fum.asp

Though I don't think Bobak was serious about burning your house down :spock:, fleas are very difficult to get rid of once they get lodged in. It's much better to overkill early than to be half-assed about it and realize 2 months later that you have a much bigger problem on your hands. Good luck with your pest problem. We had fleas at my last apartment and partially due to uncooperative and unhygienic roommates, I've learned my lesson.

Thanks for the link. I caught my wife running errands, so she is going to pick up a box. As far as burning down my house, right now it sounds appealing, but what kills me the most is that we actually keep a clean house. THE FLEAS NEED TO GO!!!!!! :)

Actually, a new Asian family moved in next door. The lot next door to me has three small homes on it. So we have three Asian families living next door.

Why do you ask?

because if you tell the asians you have unwanted cats under your house they will send the children under there to catch them and then they will eat them.

the fleas will die if they dont have any pets around so once the cats are gone so will the fleas a couple weeks after.

my grandma used to have WILD cats that lived between two fences in her backyard. they were not stray they were born to be wild and we used to try to catch them and they would tear us up so bad huge bloody wounds all over our arms. we didnt even get any shots or anything before or after each time we messed with them. guess we were lucky not to get rabid or soemthing.

oh yeah and these wild cats ALWAYS had a little of babies around. :shame:

my step dad is a retired fire fighter. he says that the number one way to tell if a home owner burned their own home down is to look at the walls.

all the family pictures have usually been taken down.

hilarious stuff.
