according to radio shack, they're best suited for lighting purposes... that's pretty much all they say about them...

It's a single, contained "switch" that throws any number of other switches. So you could have an 8PDT in one unit that's actuated by a single button push. The are activated by a charge that causes the pins to flip positions.

to get real basic, it could switch the headlamps on and off in your car, its a way of romotely switching high current- i hope this helps.

Best description of a relay:::

it's an electromagnet that when activated, physicly trips another switch or a series of switces.

What are you trying to do?

If you are doing what I think, you might want a multiplexer IC.

But does not have to be. I've been considering using an 8-pole relay for the Turbo Grafx mods I do, but that relay ain't smaller than the 8PDT switch I'm currently using.
