Does it make a difference using shielded audio wires for an AES Stereo Mod?

I know this is an old topic, but I've only found one old thread regarding types of wire to use. Does it make a performance difference to use shielded audio wire when doing an AES Stereo Mod?

If I use non shielded audio wire will regular electrical wire work the same?

Go ahead and flame me, if you think I should have done more research.

It shouldn't make a difference if the the wire is shielded or not. Shielded wire is mainly for balanced audio sources and the AES doesn't have balanced audio output anyways. You could use some radio shack cable that is thicker and has the ground or common wire wraped around the center cable but that only will do very little. I say that because the ground is all the way around the board anyways and it just makes it harder to run the thicker wire between the board and case.
Best way to do it is just to use some thinner wire that will fit between the solder points on the under side. Use as little solder as you can and don't have to much wire eposed at both solder points.
And if possible use the shortest length of wire as possible and that will help a bit.
Good Luck! And enjoy the stereo.

Thanks for the input. I will just follow the mod in these forums and use regular wire. I appreciate your advise.

I'd go with MKL's advice if I were you. He's pretty knowledgable on these things.

I found some at RadioShack, but they only sell it in a huge roll. My search continues. :eye:

I decided to use some Audio Wires instead of standard electrical wire. It's probably the same thing since they weren't high end cables. But I cut off the red and white connectors and used the wires for the stereo mod. It works well. Instead of having the wires run underneith the board, I ran the wires on the top of the board. The wires are coming out between the PCB and the memory card bracket. There is plenty of space for a thicker wire.

Sounds like a good idea. Easier than cutting away a portion of the pcb anyway. Does the memory card still insert ok?

I don't think buying a stereo cable and cutting off the connectors is the cheapest way to do it but they're only a few quid anyway. Glad you got it sorted.

The memory card inserts fine. The wire doesn't block any portion of the memory card.
