I have a small probem.

First, I have a cable internet connection.

I need to figure out a way to share my internet connection with my xbox. I have a computer downstairs, and the xbox is upstairs. If I went through my roomates celing where the computer and modem is I would be about 15 feet from the modem to the xbox. However, if I take the stairs, It is probebly more like 50 feet.

So what I need is for someone to point out a good wireless router that will hopefully keep me from lagging when playing xbox. I have also heard that I may need a station or something. Don't really know what that is. All I know is it somehow leads the internet connection upstairs to my room.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I really know nothing about routers and such.

Go with a Linksys. I have one and clearly on the box it says X-Box Live compatible. http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=601&scid=35
I put it to the test with my Nephews X-Box and it worked flawlessly. I have DSL, so I had to enter in my password and router name through the X-box, but since you have a cable set up, it should be even easier to set up. It might even be plug and play. The X-Box will be able to automatically reconize your cable settings.

If you want you X-box to be wireless as well, then you will need a wireless adapter for your X-box.

This is what you need to connect to your X-Box

Or one of these. http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=558&scid=38

There are different versions, but the first one is supposed to be the most user friendly.

This is a pricey set up, but worth it if your into online gaming

I can tell you to avoid ZyXEL, at least the 660 wireless model. I was trying to set one of those up for my wifes brother over the weekend for normal pc use. It was total crap, well it worked but was totally non user friendy. I later saw on some forums that they also suffer from problems with p2p software too.

GOS,

I just bought a wireless router specifically for this application.

I had a Linksys before hand, but it would not upgrade, so I went with a NetGear (have a hub of theirs).

Anyways, this works great for my setup. My mac is now running fast too (since it can handle my 6m connection).

Good luck,

I'd go with the 50' cat5e cable... otherwise your friendly neighbors with laptops steal your internet, and your internet speed goes down the shitter.

I second this. Wireless just doesn't give you the performance you need for online gaming, based on my experience. Granted, I haven't used super g, but regular g just doesn't cut it.

OK, thanks for the help everyone. I guess I will try this one kenny recommended, considering it's cheap. Unless I can find the xbox one for cheap.

I still have another question though. When I talked to the guy from my cable company he said I would need a wireless router, and he said I needed something else. I can't remember what it was called though. I think he said It was a station. The purpose of it was to relay the signal from downstairs to upstairs. He also said that sometimes you can find them bundled with the router, but those we're cheap ones. So my question is this....

If I buy this wireless router do I need to buy anything else to get the signal to reach upstairs?

GOS,

Yes, you'll need the wireless router & a wireless "card" for your xbox. Since the xbox itself is not wifi (built-in), you'll need a base-station which receives the wireless signal (upstairs) from your main router. The receiver/base-station then transmits the signal via ethernet wire to your gaming system.

If you cannot/will not run a physical wire from your basement to your upstairs, this seems to be your only choice. If you can fish a wire to your game room, try it (like others have mentioned).

If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask.
