The arcade power supply I use for my supergun says it should be cooled down with a fan. Is this only for when you have it enclosed in a box. The one I am using is not in a box, I have it mounted to a small plastic board. Do I still need a fan.

I wouldnt bother with a fan, if you feel the PSU getting hot then maybe.
What type of psu ?

A fan wouldn't hurt anything... it would act as more of an insurance for overheating... I think that as long as your cab has some way of venting, you should be fine... The monitor, mobo, and psu can generate a bit of heat... especially on a hot day. I don't think it's necessary, but I am going to put a few 120mm fans with ducting in my cab (it's going to have much more than just a monitor, mobo, and psu to generate heat), but you shouldn't need the fan as long as you have some sort of vent.

stuffmonger it certainly wouldnt hurt at all, but is it really worth the hastle.
Its a supergun application, not a cab afaik, so ambient airflow conditions should not be an issue. I dont think it necessary.

I have several cabs in one room and have disconnected the fans (with no adverse effect) to cut down on the mechanical noise. Hardly hear it with the games running or attract mode, but its plum uncessary imho. The monitor which does disipate some heat is usually well away from the fan which is usually around the bottom of the cab.
I tend to leave covers off allowing ventilation.

btw being the tropics I have a ceiling fan which helps I guess

Indeed, especially if they are lazy and leave them wired up outside the supergun exposed to the elements like you did :).

The one I have is heat shrinked and has a cover on the connections. Always put a cover on the power strip.

Isnt the one he is selling also front mounted... Did you just say Norton built it? So basically your the one saying Norton is lazy, not me. I was under the assumption Samurai10000 built the one he is selling, not Norton....

See,

Front mounted too :).

So keeping it light hearted we could say that mine is only half lazy done because of the front mounts, and his is double lazy for the exposed psu and wires coming from it,along with the front panel mounts, since you consider those lazy....

Then again though, you think the one I own looks ugly so whatever. Since you said Nortons work was lazy by mistake just now I can't even take your word for it anyway.

Norton just sold his d-sub punches and HE makes superguns unlike you.

His are front mounted,so is the ones I own,so whats lazy about it again??? Amazing turn about, and saying he makes them and I don't doesn't mean much. The person who built mine does, and he does them by hand also, just like Norton it seems, drilling and filing down to fit,so saying hes lazy is the same as saying Norton is too.

So which is it,is Norton lazy or not? I mean since you say front mounting is lazy and all and this is what he and others seem to do which is it gonna be??? is it lazy when others do it but not when Norton does? Is this a special double standard you hold for friends here maybe?

Personally the only thing I feel is lazy is the power supply thing, because its exposed. I'm sorry,I don't care who built it,the thing is exposed, wiring and all. Thats the quick method. Tubing the wiring together for protection would have been worth the effort and looked much better.

Now it seems the only reason you really jumped on this is because you feel I insulted Nortons SG here,so you have a personal motive it seems of some type to mess with me... I am guessing hes your friend,or whatever...either way,I don't care. I think his SG looks great,I think that power supply coulda been better.
later...

I've had a bunch of styles over the year....

That looks like it could have been one of my old guns.... But with a different PSU.

For the record:
But I don't leave exposed PSU's........

Yea,and no one is really making this clear. Your name kinda got dragged into it. To me,its not cool to just have it sitting there. there are better ways of doing it then that, and to me,$350 on that with a exposed psu is steep,no matter what anyone else thinks. Like I said,I think the SG itself looks great,so kudos to you Norton if its your work.

It looks like Norton's work but when I think about it, I remember samurai asking a bunch of questions about building super guns when I first came to this site. So I think the supergun was actually built by Samurai. Sorry Norton, looked like yours.

And for the record I never said Norton was lazy, dont put words in my mouth. ;)

It's all cool...

For the record, I wouldn't bother with a fan if the PSU was exposed... But would suggest it if it was enclosed.

Ah,well, either way the SG itself looks great. As I said, its the power supply that is not so attractive as its exposed, which is not ideal or real safe in the larger scheme of things. It could be enclosed in a tight fit pactec case of some type, with a fan,and make a power cable for it to the SG. That would look extra nice and tidy it up alot so it looks safer and more presentable psu wise.
