Hi, I'm biffy, I'm kinda new here and have never posted on here before but I have observed this forum for a while now and have learned alot about the various SNK systems from fellow members.

I myself have a Japanese AES, serial number 72,XXX and I love it to bits but since moving out of my girlfriends flat I'm now tele-less and itching to play some King of Fighters '98.

We used to share a nice JVC 28" flat, widescreen that had 3 scarts sockets and was 100 Hz and the AES looked amazing on it but now I find myself having to down size to a 24" or even a 21" but the main thing is not really screen size but more importantly, not compromising RGB quality.

I bought a Japanese machine initally because I wanted to see all the red blood flying whilst brawling in games like K.o.F '98 , so a decent TV with a crisp image and warm RGB is vital as I'm sure it is for you too.

So then, what's everyone use here?

Thank you for your time

Once you get much bigger than 27-32" Neo starts to look pretty crappy, same goes for the new HD TVs. No scanlines, stretching to fill the 16x9 ratio...all makes it look crappier to me. Which is why I love my cabs. :drool_2:

Well not entirely true with the help of the s-video and many of the Neo-Geo AES advance and modded unit and componets everything looks pretty cool here to me. Still lookin a killer neo graphics. :buttrock:

I've got a few 25" rgb crts for my soon to be cabs... they all get beautifull picture... flat panels are inferior in my opinion... They suck many an ugly egg.

Thanks for all info so far, it's much appreciated. So...from what's been said already, would it be fair to say that there is a slight division amongst Neo gamers as to what is better for displaying the best image.

I always presumed that flatscreens would be best ( unless you're using a cab of course ) but stuffmongers post has thrown the cat among the pidgeons somewhat.

Should I even entertain the idea of getting a non flat screen and whilst on the subject, what key features should my new TV have?

Is 50Hz still O.K?

What about the different types of scanning?

Cheers.

A low res RGB monitor (or tv) would give the best quality for neo games. An HDTV actually makes the games look much worse since they're stretched from low res > high res.

I'm using a Philips 100hz 29" 4:3 TV for all my consoles, all have RGB cables too.

I especially bought a 4:3 and not a widescreen, cause all my older consoles (Neo, Saturn, SNES, SFC etc.) display like shit in widescreen.

I guess for the coming next gen consoles a HD widescreen would be awesome.

playing all my goodies on a wide screen 56" dlp samsung hlp5674.
i have a 36 wega. ill never miss those scan lines.
i like seeing every pixel perfect, wide screen is the way of the future, why hate wide screen for your neo? just leave it in the 4:3 format?
i have my neo-geo, genesis, turbo duo, super grafx and super nova running through a neobitz rgb to component board.
dont ever use compsite video on a HD tv it looks like poo. hell it looked like poo to me on my wega. my dreamcast hooked up to one of the vga ports.
xbox, game cube and ps2 with component,(xbox is a must for any hd tv owner out there).
all my other systems jag,3do ect are fine with svideo.

Im the oppsosite, I prefer to have scanlines for neo geo or any other 2D game as thats the way its spose to look. Without scanlines just looks plain crap for 2D games and same applies to widescreen IMO.

HD and widescreen is only good for movies and new consoles but not very good for retro stuff.

Basically if it doesnt look the way it's meant to look its no good.

I'm using a 27" old school Sony Trinitron. I've had it for about ten years, and I must say it's held up pretty damned good. I'm starting to notice a few imperfections in the picture, but overall it still looks great. I actually thought of switcing to a plasma screen, but with the way this TV still looks, it's hard to justify it to myself.

one of my fav backup monitors for games is my old ass c64 monitor.
has svideo you have to make a cable for the back to get modern consoles to use the svideo. hell if you use composite video you dont get any pixel crawl. unlike
every new tv out. these new tvs must use some digital converter that adds that shitty pixel crawl effect. i never noticed it with any older tv back in the day.
i like a nice sharp picture with no artifacts. it seemed some older sets had less problems.
but that is why i like the nice crisp look of a old console on a hd tv as long as it is crisp the games are low res and blocky no way around it. i could see the every other pixel effect in neo, saturn and genesis games even back in the day of using composite video. any time they tried like in light, shadows, smoke clouds and water ect...
back in the day when i played my 1st emulator on a pc i was the same way ..yuck why does the game look so blocky...
but that is the real raw picture. scan lines are just a old time relic of the past just an other artifact in the picture. well maybe they can make a hd tv that can add fake scan lines as an option for non interlaced pictures. that would be cool.

about the flat panel vs. crt debate... the thing is, is that flat panels just don't quite meet up to the picture quality of a decent crt... for starters, the resolution isn't as good, and secondly, the pixels on flat panels are slow to react compared to crts... which gives a more fuzzy picture, especially when things are moving quickly. also, flat panels tend to make your eyes hurt more if watching for prolonged periods of time. I don't really know much about plasmas, except, they don't have that great of a lifetime, and they cost a fortune... My advise... get a crt for now, and let the flat panel technology catch up before you buy one.

ps... I heard a rumor of an lcd-2 monitor coming out sometime soon-ish (maybe a year or two... it was just a rumor), which is supposed to make current flat panels seem like a joke.
