Top Players Golf

I just got Top Players Golf (MVS) today, and I can't hit the ball more than a couple of feet. I go to the shot opotion and then press A. I move the X to where I want the ball to go. Then I press A it shows the golfer hitting the ball and the ball goes a couple of feet. The shot meter doesn't move. Please help.
