I have a MV1F board that has been in storage for awhile. I went to plug it in and it no longer works. I get nothing, no bootup screen no errors nothing. The power light comes on and the monitor shows some horizontal lines.

Is the CPU dead?

The first thing I'd do is clean the Jamma Edge..It may have yellowed etc while in storage.(this means harness too)

It's worth a shot.

How's the board look..is it clean or ?

I've already cleaned the board and all contacts, I also have 5 volts present. I've tried the board in 2 seperate cabinets. Same result.

Did you double check to see that your JAMMA connector was not inverted (parts side up, solder side down)? I have accidentally done this before (my jamma connector is labled in chinese) luckily it didn't damage my board.

All boards play great in my cabinets however this MVS won't go. The board is totally dead, I've done a few more checks. The screen that I see when booting up the MVS is the same if I don't have any board connected to the cabinets.

According to my multimeter the z80 cpu chip has 3 dead pins in a row. Double checked with a working 4 slot and these pins all return readings. Guess that I need to replace the cpu.

Just as a side note, reversing the jamma edge connect will not cause damage (its designed to be idiot proof)

If you hold buttons or sticks down at the same time you may see smoke though

I see humor in that for some reason.. :tickled:

Curious as to if this board can be fixed..and at what cost..
Does the dead pins mean bad Z80 chip or just bad pins/traces..something that may be repairable..?

Curious as to what would cause this to happen to a working board put in storage.

Chris1 your curious as what made the board not work. Well so am I. Had the board for ages, then got another cabinet with a 4 slot in it. Converted one cabinet to mame and wrapped the single slot in bubble wrap and stored it in a box. Got another cabinet and thought I'd put the single slot in to it. But now it doesn't work. The board is very clean and certainly has no scratches or broken traces.

Also to point out, a dead Z80 would not stop the board from booting I think, it would simply give you a Z80 error and stop. I think also that even a dead 68000 will still allow the board to output something to screen. Basically the flashing garbage and clicking sound one sees when booting with no bios in the system for example.

The fact that no picture is coming out whatsoever makes me wonder if the board is actually running but the gfx output is somehow dead. Have you tried leaving it on for a minute to see if you suddenly hear the NeoGeo jingle?

Finally I think the first thing to check will be the timing crystals maybe one has gone and it would totally explain a black picture I think.

Has the nicad battery spewed over the board causing corosion of the tracks.
Make sure the dips are off- then boot up.

All dips are off, there is a bit of corrosion to some tracks, but this is not from the battery, I live close to the ocean. The board has been washed and the tracks or traces that I have checked are all good.

Have you checked the 5 volt vcc on the ICs, it may be present at the edge connect but maybe a poor connection or break in a track could be causing a problem. Try gently twisting the board whilst running, it may make or break an intermittent broken trace that may be the cause. Anything running unusually hot on the board ? How much current is being drawn from the 5 volt supply?

Tried twisting the board, nothing. Nothing that I can find running hot. Haven't tested the IC's yet, will do this next. Just for the hell of it also tried a different z80 CPU, again nothing.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out. I got stuck into this board today. Upon very close inspection I found a number of tracks/traces that even though they looked good, were in fact faulty, these were no doubt corroded by salt as l am close to the ocean.

I ended up giving this board a lite acid bath and then another clean. The acid bath fixed a few of bad traces and so now I need to repair about dozen traces. Also I tested the old CPU in another board and the CPU was also faulty from this board.

The salt from the ocean stuffed up this board quickly, no wonder my 4wd is so rusty.
