Back when I was 13 I bought a Super Dodge Ball arcade machine for $225 (saved up all my birthday money and monies from before). A month later it broke down and I had to pay $60 for it to get fixed (which was a few years later).

I still have no clue as to how a PCB works or if I can even install them in my SDB cabinet to play some others.

You can plug any "JAMMA" game in that cab (most games more recent than 1986 are JAMMA). JAMMA is a standard... just like Genesis games go in a Sega Genesis, and NES games go in an NES.

Oh, well...

turns out it isn't as easy as that.

Contra is "vertical". Meaning it would show up sideways on your monitor. You'd need to have a vertical cabinet or a rotatable monitor to play that.

Really, there's no magic to the insides of an arcade machine. Just plug and unlug the game like you would any cart in a home system. The "system" itself is on most every PCB sold (which is why they cost so much - it's comparable to purchasing an NES every time you wanted to purchase a new NES game). That's why Neo MVS games cost so much less than PCBs. You have a "system" that plugs into the JAMMA harness, and carts that only contain the ROM data that plug into the system.

But, essentially, everything else is "as easy as that".

I'll help all I can. Keep the questions coming if you have any.

JAMMA is a universal system for the majority of arcade games from 1986 on. They're design to plug and play most pcb board that run on two players with a maximum of 4 buttons as standard. 4 player games like Simpsons, TMNT, X-Menm etc. and multi-button games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have addition imputs on those boards in which additional wiring and connections are required. Some, like the Namco fighting games have an added connector board for any extra buttons and stereo sound. Gun games like Area 51 and Lethal Enforcers have seperate port connectors on their boards for the guns.

Also keep in mind the older games like Contra, 1943, Raiden and a number of scrollers are set up on a vertical monitor instead of the horizontal that the majority of the games are today and most deluxe dedicated games like driving simulators may have different wiring schemes than JAMMA (though the Crusin' series from Midway is JAMMA)

If you have a manual for a video game board, it should have a perfect layout of all the JAMMA wiring and where they go. Once you figure it out, you'll find JAMMA wiring a piece of cake.

I have been looking at some PCBs as well... never bought one before.
So basically anything that is JAMMA and uses 4 buttons will plug right up and go?

ForeverSublime
04-21-2005, 02:33 PM
Anything JAMMA will work. Even if it only has 2 buttons, etc. There are little hinderances here and there when you get deep into the arcade scene, but you'll learn them as you go along. Most anything is plug and play, though. Drop a list of the PCBs you're looking for and people can tell you if you're going to run into any problems. What type of setup are you using?

Silk Worm and The Punisher will be just fine.

Cabal is controlled by an optical trackball, so you'd have to purchase one of those. There are old style trackballs and new style... the new style ones are silky smooth, but that ruins the purity some people find enjoyable in the older games. The old ones are also MUCH cheaper when you find them used. You can house the trackball in a small project box you find at radio shack (5-15$) and run the wires connecting the trackball to the PCB through the coin door (I don't know how your coin door is set up, but you may be able to open it up and stash the trackball there while it's not in use). The buttons on your control panel should work just fine, or you could install some buttons in the project box with the trackball if you'd like an all-in-one setup.

The Street Fighter series uses 6 buttons, and wiring that isn't too hard. However, you'd have to modify your control panel with some extra buttons. Or you could build/buy some 6 button joysticks and connect them via a controller port like I mentioned above with the trackball.

I'm not too familiar with MVS cabs... www.hardmvs.com to the rescue!

Edit: I've hooked up Jamma boards to a 4 slot cab at some Neo gatherings and it's worked just fine. There are different model cabs, though, so who knows.

so as far as using the JS ports on the street fighter games...do they have ports like my MVS does? or do I have to find some way to wire them into the harnesses?

I wouldn't be apposed to adding buttons to the stock panel...as long as it wouldn't interfere with my SNK stuff... just wondering how you wire them in so they would always be available when a game requires them.

Does anyone have a list of games that direclty connect and play? Without additional button? Most of the games I like are between 1986-96

Heh, the ratio of games that are plug and play to games that require unique setups is like 90%-10%. You can buy most any JAMMA game, as long as it is horizontal (so no vertical shooters, they'd appear sideways on your monitor), and doesn't have custom controls (no more than 4 buttons... very rare a game has 4 buttons in the first place).

As for the Street Fighter games, you need a "kick harness". You can buy the parts to make one at www.therealbobroberts.com or you can ask around to buy a premade one (it'll cost you about 15-20$ as opposed to 2-3$). Tell him what game you have and he'll know what you need. Or just ask around here and someone will give you crystal clear info.

I can't speak all of the street fighter games (as they've appeared on different hardware), but if I remember correctly the first street fighter had a 4 pin "kick harness". So, I think the weak and medium attacks were handled through the JAMMA harness to your control panel and the strong attacks were through the auxilary harness to the strong attack buttons on your control panel.

If you modify your CP, you should be able to have this setup with no problems.

ABCD
DEF

ABCD is the regular setup you already have.
DEF will be three new buttons you install and wire to an aux harness that connects directly onto a board (not through the JAMMA harness). If I remember right, you'd have the two D buttons wired together, and the D button on the bottom row would also be connected to whichever aux harness you need. You may NOT have to wire the two together, but you may run into a game (rare instance) that has the D button set up for weak kick attack (which I think Street Fighter was one of them - I'd have to get the manual to double check).

Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: The ports for the extra buttons on Street Fighter are not like joystick ports you are used to seeing. They are just a few male pins that stick out that you connect a harness to. I believe the exact harness for the original SF was ".156 Housing with pins 4 pos" from Bob Roberts. Most games that used an aux harness in the early 90's used 10 or 15 pin .100 straight molex housings. However, the pinouts were different from company to company.

The best way to get into JAMMA stuff is to just do it. Remember - JAMMA is a standard (Japanese Arcade Machine Manufacturers Association), meaning it was created to be modular. That made it easy for arcade ops to keep the same cab and just purchase a PCB of a new game when the old game wasn't making money anymore. Before 1986, every time you wanted a new game you had to buy an entire cab.

Just adding to the excellent description written by ForeverSublime, here's a page with some illustrations made by the afforementioned (and highly recommended!) Bob Roberts concerning this very topic:

http://www.homearcade.org/BBBB/plus.html

As for the various Street Fighter games and their respective kick harnesses, I have to admit that I dunno anything about the very first one, but as for the sequels there were basically 2 different kick harnesses: one that only works with those games based on CPS-1 hardware (The World Warrior, Champion Edition, Turbo Hyper Fighting), and another one that will work with everything else, namely CPS-2, CPS-3, ZN-1, ZN-2 and Naomi (but only if you use the Capcom I/O board with the latter!).

Oh, and I should mention there are 2 versions of the Street Fighter 1 PCB with different pinouts. When you get your board we can help you identify what you need. Off the top of my head, I think the 2nd revision just had an extra adapter for the sound, but maybe there was something else. Nothing major at all.

I noticed some of them came with sound cards or something similar. What about Mortal Kombat games?

Im going to add the extra buttons I think, doesnt sound too bad. I guess I would get the second harness, the one that works with more games. I do like all the alpha versions anyhow.

I can see my cabinet is going to need some internal shelves added :loco:

Dude, what's your problem? Why can't you pick a normal game? :make_fac:

Heheh, MK also needs a kick harness. MK1 and 2 are 5 button games and MK3 and 4 are 6 button games. Personally I have no idea what type of harness you'll need. I'm sure someone can give you those specifics as it was a popular series... If not in this thread you can start a new one here or in the tech forum that will catch someone's attention.

So, should I start listing what you'll need for mahjong games? :D

lol, sorry... I have been on a real big fighter kick these last 2 months. I have never owned a perfect version of any MK game or Street fighter...since all the home ports blew IMO.

I think Im going to try some easy stuff first, since they are cheap and require no additional wiring. I did find a harness for all the MK games, and Capcom games.... just not 100% on how it ties in yet.

Do they just run from the new buttons to the board? Im thinking there is more to it right?

Thanks for the help, very cool of you guys

Heh, no worries, I was just giving you a hard time. :p

It's pretty much as simple as you just said. You take some wires connected from your extra buttons and unify them in one end of a harness (we'll call this harness "A"). Then you take a kick harness and attach one end to the PCB and one end to harness A and you're good to roll.

Here are some pics:

Street Fighter 1: This is actually the other revision board I was talking about. The kick harness here is on the left side of the jamma edge, and is a horizontally oriented male port with 12 pins (it's right next to the big blue thing).

http://www.crazykong.com/pcbs/P%20-%20S/StreetFighter1.pcb.html

On the version I'm familiar with, there is a 4 pin port on the right side of the jamma edge (where the orange, blue and yellow circular stickers are in that pic). That 4 pin port looks like this:

http://img257.echo.cx/my.php?image=imga02336ci.jpg

That pic is of the stereo-out option for a Simpsons Bowling PCB, but the port looks just the same. There's another port (pictured here: http://img257.echo.cx/my.php?image=imga02320ij.jpg) just above it that my trackball connects to, and that's all that's needed to play it. All the rest of the buttons are connected through the JAMMA harness like any other game. I apologize I don't have a game pictured more similar to what you're looking for, but the concept is the exact same.

You'll really enjoy playing the arcade version of your favorite games. With MK, if you're a HUGE nerd, you can even buy fanmade revisions. There are chips you can buy and swap off your board (so they can be replaced back to the normal revision whenever you'd like) that change the gameplay (1.5x animation speed, no delay on uppercuts so they can be combo'd in different ways, etc).

so these pcbs already have the extra pins for the harness on them?

So Im basically making some sort of harness for the buttons, that I have to connect to the kick harness,...which then plugs into the extra pins on the board?

Do you ever have to add the extra pins to the board to allow for the kick harness?

Yep, you've got it just right for the kick harness. Everything is right there on the board. It's the same concept whether you're connecting extra buttons, rotary joysticks, trackballs, light guns, etc.

great, seems very do-able. So will I need additional / alternate power supplies to handle different voltage setting for the different boards? Has anyone come up with a "switch box" of sorts to change which PCB your harnesses interact with?

I would like to have one or two additional board decks installed in the cab, so I wouldnt be removing the SNK hardware to swap games.

All boards run around the same amount of juice. However, some do need to be changed. There should be a knob on your power supply (probably close to a light that's either red, yellow, or green - indicating the intensity of power being supplied) that will adjust that.

As for the switch box, there is a "multi jamma adapter" or something along that name. I'm sure someone will pop up with the URL. You can hook up as many boards as you'd like to them - they're kinda expensive, though, if you ask me. My problem with them is that they power ALL boards at all times (when it's on, at least). It doesn't just power the board you are playing. So, if one thing goes wrong they all go wrong... if you catch me drift.

Konig

yeah I can see your point... Id be pretty happy with 2-3 boards. Thats about all I could afford to lose as well. Most of the boards I have been looking at are relatively cheap.

Bob Roberts is awesome! Buy all your stuff from him. His wires are thick and well made and he give you penty of it!

That's a pretty slick idea ForeverSublime with storing the trackball in the coin door.

Jamma collecting is inticing and all, but my draw is pre-Jamma cabs. Stuff like Tron and Lunar Lander. Man Lunar Lander is fun.

Thanks. :)

One day, one day... ;)

I actually prefer Seibu and Raizing shooters, so I started there, and then had to stop spending on PCBs for a while. Eventually I plan to get back into it, once a few things are paid off. Then I'll finally finish my MVS collection and get a few more Raizing/8ing PCBs, and then some Cave shooters... :)

Seibu and also Raizing made some of the best shooters for the arcademarket.

Its funny to see that you have Batrider in your collection. In my opinion its the best Raizing shooter so far. After the release of IBARA i have to change my mind ;) (ok officially its a cave game, but we all know that "inside" its a raizing game ;) )

There are a hand full of member here with such a large variety of EXPENSIVE arcade hardware they make the rest of us so called collectors who only have around 70 or so boards ( no cabinents ) look minor League. You Geyser are one of those elite, nice collection. Where you a operator at one time because those are alot of high end cabinets?

if youre handy and patient its not impossible at all to get high-end arcade machines...

if you look twice at his pics you'll see hes renovated it all himself.. i dont think he paid a fortune for that totally busted daytona 2player...? (tho im sure it ended up somewhat costly after it was done, but prolly nowhere near as much as a new machine)

I think money has a little something to do with the equation, I meam the cabs might had been pieces of crap when he bought them but he put more money into restoration right. I live in a apartment so space is a issue and moving one or more cabs can be a problem. By the way does anyone know where I can get a battle circuit board especially a euro one

droid
06-05-2005, 08:05 AM
Yep, you've got it just right for the kick harness. Everything is right there on the board. It's the same concept whether you're connecting extra buttons, rotary joysticks, trackballs, light guns, etc.

Hi ForeverSublime,

Sorry, another jamma newb here :smirk:...Are you saying I can run a trackball, rotary joystick or lightgun game on my candy cab like ikari warriors, missle command or virtua cop by doing the above? Do you swap out control panels also when doing this?

Thanks,
Droid

I ordered a Tekken 2 pcb recently and I was wondering if my Supergun made by D-Lite that uses the neo-geo pinout will be able to use all of the buttons like player 1 kick, player 2 kick ect? Obviously the game wont be as fun if I can't do all the moves...

Ebay. Just look for a Sysstem 11 / 12 kick harness. In regards to tekken, all it contains is the 4th button (which is not on the jamma).

or just make one yourself, its just a matter of ataching a wire to the kisk-pin on the tekken board to the pin for the 4th button in your supergun setup :)

only thing is he'll need to find the proper connector if he doesn't want to perminently wire up the board (aka soldering).

So if I bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=6182945054 what would I attach the wires at the end of the harness to? Would I have to connect it to my supergun or something.

if you open your supergun youll see wires attached to the pins that come out of the front where you plug your controller into, just find the pin thats for button 4 and attach the wires to that one :)

http://www.sgrepository.com/modules/xcgal/index.php?cat=10069

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/johnno15/110_1073.jpg

http://www.spicken.de/dannywm/2slotnew/

About 30% of the games are at my house. Another 50% of the games are at a HUGE storage facility. The other 20% is spread out amongst homes of friends. I'm sure I missed a few games since I sometimes forget that I have a game or two at a friends.

Yeah I'm more focused on collecting classic 80s arcade games. I spent the majority of my youth playing these games so naturally this is my area of interest. I didn't start collecting JAMMA or Neo MVS stuff until maybe about 5 years ago. I did buy an AES system pretty much when it first came out though. The MVS hardware was still pretty expensive up until recently so I never bothered until I got my Neo 19". I might be able to dig up a few pictures but most of my games are jammed packed in my garage and storage so taking pictures isn't that easy.

yeah, the thing is that I don't have enough room in my apartment to hold the fucker :(

I haven't decided yet, but If I do it would be $1000 no more then than that.
It's a great game but I have , just might not have the space. :(

If you do plan on selling give me a pm.

On a side note I just got through buying some cps 2 pcb from a local malibu castle. It pays to open your mouth and ask as some operators are more than willing to part with old games they consider junk. I probably be selling some soon once they are phoenixed as I am starting to have mutiple copies of alot of my games.

Hmmm....

Fully running:

Kangaroo

Partially running:

Pole Position - needs a levelling leg replaced and the CRT rejuvenated
Combatribes - needs a new horizontal width coil
Sega Outrun Turbo - whew... Sound out, control panel needs replacing, and background objects are messed up on the video board

Not running:

Neo Geo 1 slot converted cabinet with Shock Troopers 2nd Squad (a KICK A$$ game!) - Monitor needs recapped and resoldered but I have to finish the other games before I have room in the garage to bring it out of storage!

Neo Geo 4 slot PCB - bought off of fleaBay... someone else tried to fix it before I got it so I'm having to repair their crappy work and THEN troubleshoot it.

Why do jackasses that can't solder to save their hides try to fix things? Leave it to people that CAN! (And... yes, I can... with my Pace MBT 250 soldering station with almost every surface mount attachment - just need to find a cheap BGA iron for it...)

I have the following dedicated cabinets: SFII:CE, Final Fight, Wrestle War, SFII: WW, Black Tiger(cocktail): my living room coffee table... and a MAME cabinet that I made for myself from an old JAMMA cab. I also have a Bubble Bobble cabinet missing the pcb which I may refurbish or convert to another MAMA cabinet.

I also have a bunch of JAMMA and non-JAMMA boards, but can't list them off the top of my head.

From the KLOV:

The game is housed in a large cabinet. The top portion is 33 inches deep by 33.5 inches wide. The whole cabinet is 72 inches tall. There is a version from Taito of Japan (c)1987 with three monitors. The action is spanned across the monitors giving the game a "wide-screen" effect, which also adds to the gameplay.

There are 3 known instances of this game owned by a known collector. Of these, 2 of them are original dedicated machines, 0 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards have been plaed in another game cabinet, and 1 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Other games that run on this hardware include Darius and Darius II/Sagaia.

On the Tekken 2 board,if its like Tekken 3 at all,you can wire up the kick buttons off the second harness area of the pcb to the jamma harness pinout area for buttons 3 and 4,like I did.Just make sure you solder at the end of the pins nearest the pcb so that you can still connect the jamma harness. If you need pics let me know by pm.

Wow, that is indeed a rare cabinet. Did they paint over the sideart when they converted it? Any luck in removing the paint if they did?

It's hard to believe but they left the cabinet as is and didn't bother painting over it (Thank God!). I say this because they hacked up the control panel, removed the marquee, changed out the XY monitor with a raster and converted it to JAMMA.

It was rather funny how I came across it. I went to a friend's house for a BBQ about 3 years ago. When I was driving away, I noticed his neighbor had his garage door opened. As I passed the house and caught a glimpse of the cabinet. I instantly called my friend and told him to go next door and buy the JAMMAitized Quantum cabinet from his neighbor. He thought I was smoking crack or something because he said there was no way I could tell it was a Quantum or that it had been converted to JAMMA especially while driving by. He told me he's seen the game a few times before and knew it was a Ninja Turtles but doubted it was a Quantum. He immediately walks over there and confirmed it was a converted Quantum. The funny thing is that he really likes Quantum after he played it a few times at California Extreme. Heck, I even impressed myself that I was able to identify the game in the back of a dark garage while driving by LOL

As for new additions, this week I've added a 4-slot dedicated Neo Geo and a couple of 1-slot boards and a bunch of Neo Carts. Nothing rare, mostly commons. My collection is now over 80+ uprights. Ouch!

Too much to count, better yet too lazy to count so I'll summarize.

MVS (Missing the last 25 titles which are games nobody plays)
Hyper 64 (Complete new fighting set)
CPS2 (Missing the obscure puzzle titles and the shmup triad GW, MM, PG and D&D SOM)
Atomiswave (Missing the last 4 titles in my chosen 13 meaning I'm not planning to own the craptastic light gun and driving games MS6, SSVI, FotNS and RF2)
PGM Carts (Missing SvG and Oriental Legend)
SPI (Missing Battle Balls and Seibu Soccer)
PCB's mostly shmups and puzzlers from Raizing, Seibu, SNK, Psiko, Cave, and others.

Cabs...all kinds of cabs mostly MVS.
