View Full Version : PC Engine is/was THE machine for shooters?

How much do you hold this statement to be true?
Modern "retro" videogaming is full of such cliches. When you hear peeps talk about PC Engine shooters, Lords (winds) of Thunder always comes up, same can be said for Neo Geo and King Of Fighters.
TBH, despite these being excellent in their own right, there is a wealth of far more interesting stuff out there, particularly PC Engine wise. For starters the Star Soldier series (of which Final Soldier is my far out favourite).
What PC Engine shooters do you enjoy or play, seems to be all talk of cave arcade shooters and such n such from where i'm sitting these days.
I've got to say that I think both Blazing Lazers and Dead Moon are better than Lords of Thunder. Well, Dead Moon may not be better per se, but I play it as often if not more than LoT.
But I agree, the PCE was a fantastic system for shooters. Although with all the arcade ports now, the Dreamcast may have that title.
Oh, but don't forget Toilet Kids for PCE.

Lots of talk about Cave these days, but the PCE probably has the greatest proportion of shooters in its game library(Ratio of shooters to other games, that is).
I myself consider it -the- shooter console, because besides Dracula-X, that's what it seems to be best known for.
I'd have to say the PCE was my favorite home console, and the shooter aspect is one of the main reasons.
Gate of Thunder/Lords of Thunder still command decent prices for old shooters.
Don't forget this little guy though:

Turbo Grafx [later got a CD, then 3.0 card...then finally a Duo] was my fave system I've had so far in life. Loved Dragon Spirit, Blazing Lazers, R-Type, Raxanber III, LOT, GOT, ungh! LOVE that damn system.

The PC-Engine Hu-Card of Salamander is probably my current favourite on the system.
Other faves would be Soldier Blade and PC Denjin (aka Air Zonk).
I spent over $450 putting together a TG16, CD, converter card, system 3.0 card, etc. (yes, I know a Duo would have cost half that; long story), and I never have regretted it.
I enjoys my Bonk, like D mentioned, but the reason I own the thing and love it is for the shooters- I would agree that the PCE is still the biggest shooter system of all-time, just ahead of the Saturn (Japanese, of course) and the Dreamcast. Gunhed, Soldier Blade, and Final Soldier are all great, great games and absolutely flattened anything that was available on the SNES or Genesis at the time, IMO. Air Zonk is great fun. Lords of Thunder is fun, but I like Gate of Thunder a little better, personally. I think it's a little more refined, overall. Ai Cho Aniki is strange as hell, if you like a little homoeroticism in your 2-D shmup. And I just got Steam Hearts, which takes the title of perviest game I own, topping Strip Fighter 2 and various others. Can't remember playing another game, ever, in which the player character has to have sex with the bosses to purify them.
I would say that the PCE's hold on the title is looser than it used to be, mainly due to the Dreamcast still getting Naomi ports, like Dean said. And it doesn't have enough of them, but there are a lot of really good shooters on Saturn beyond the usual Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga.
But overall, yes, I would still call the PCE THE machine for shooters.
Personaly, on the PCEngine, my original favourites are Coryoon, Hana taka dakka and Star Parodia :)
Maybe if Cave made some shooters for the PC Engine, it would still be all the rage... :emb:

My actual no.1 PCE game is Download by NEC Avenue, for sure its not for shooting purists. Its the package, the way the story is worked into the gme while you play, the anime cut scenes and most importantly the music.
The swearing engrish helps too.
I have long been curious about, but not rich enough to actually play, Sapphire. I've seen it referred to as the most legendary shooter on PCE, anyone agree/refute that claim? :spock:

Body Conquest II is pretty pervy as well, isn't it?

Although for me, the shmup machine of choice between 89 and the mid-90s was the Mega Drive, I once had a PCE and had fun with it for a year and a half before I sold it in favor of the Neo and other vg-related madness...
The PCE shmup I've played the most was Galaga 88. I loved the arcade original, and I still rate the PCE port as almost perfect in every aspect.

It still is a top machine for shoot-em ups i would say for sure!!.... :buttrock:
Gates of thunder & Lords of thunder kickstarted it all for me :D ...along with the following.....
Soldierblade,Gunhed,superstarsoldier,gradius,r-type.....1+2...Ahh! the list goes on :D
Timeless classics..

don't forget the building legacy of PS2, which seems to get a new shooter (or re-released shooter) every few months

Don't forget about Cotton(I just love this game), Spriggan(intense), Super Raiden(I like playing this game even better than the actual arcade game + better music than the playstation version), Gradius 2, and Finally R-type(Probably my favorite all time shooter).
I have a kisado converter and an arcade card so I've played Sapphire. I think it is a really great game. There are some polygonal enemies, cool line scolling, and the bosses animate really well (like blazing star, pulstar, and sol-divide's bosses). I must be due to the extra heaping of ram.The music is nice also, but the coolest thing about Sapphire is that it is a 2-player simultaneous game. That can't be said about some of the other great shooters on this system.

Thanks for the info on Sapphire. Sounds like a very impressive game, makes me even more tempted to shell out the $ for it and an arcade card...

I still think the Saturn is the king of the shooter consoles.
Too many drop-dead amazing arcade ports AND original titles.
Radiant, Sokyou, the Salamander/Gradius/Parodius ports, Sengoku Blade, ThunderForce V/Gold Packs, the mind wobbles.
The PCE and MegaDrive deserve respect, but I think a hardcore shooter fan could own only a JP Saturn and be more than satisfied.

God I love shmups on the pce, I loved GOT and LOT, Sapphire is quite an impressive title too, on the rare occasion I dare to play it.
I adore the 'cute-em-ups' like Pc Denjin and Long Nose Goblin, though my favourite by far has to be Coryoon.

I bought a used copy of Cotton 2 for the Japanese

Is their a Cotton game for the PC Engine Hu-Card game?.
Btw: Have you played Parodius which is a very

Dracula X Rondo of Blood is pretty hard but I'll
manage to beat it soon. :D

:spock: Where is the two button controller that was supposed to come with your Core Grafx?
It came with a six button controller for the fighting
games which I was supposed to get Street Fighter II
Champion Edition Hu-Card game but the battery inside
was dead & my friend gave me Bonk's Adventures as
a replacement which I was happy either way. I got a
game at least though.
I need to get a 2 buttion controller to play my Dracula X
Rondo of Blood game a lot easier, but I will use my six
buttion controller for the fighting games mostly though. ;)
I also need to get a Turbo Tap & the Extension cable so
my mom or her boyfriend don't have to climb over & trip
over the RCA jacks which I found the Extension cable
online somewhere for $10.00. Also I will get another six
buttion controller for the Tubo Tap so that I can have
Two players because my Core Graphic has only one
controller port only. I am very happy with my Core
Graphic unit & the Super CD-Rom 2 attachment
which was in great condition & with no problem's at all.
I got my Core Grafx modded by D-Lite & a Kisado
Convertor to play US games on my Core Grafx since you
need the unit modded.
D-Lite knows what he is doing. :)
I owe about $90 for the Kisado Convertor which
I'll give him about $40 for May & $50 for June which
will be paid off by then. ;)
Are their any good two player games that you can
recommend to me so that I can buy some games
here on the forums & on ebay?.
I want a Cotton game to play on my Core Grafx. hehe

Psychic Storm is a cool vert shooter from Laser Soft and Alfa System that not many people talk about. It's got some shortcomings, but the presentation is nice and the gameplay is solid enough to make it worth checking it out.
http://www.retrogaming.it/pcengine/psy4.gif http://www.retrogaming.it/pcengine/psychic3.gif
The most interesting gameplay addition is a transformation feature. Press I, your character shouts out "PSYCHIKUU STORM!", and your ship transforms into one of four weird bio-insect things depending on which character you choose. Each one has a different powerful weapon, but the transformation only lasts as long as the timer bar at the bottom of the screen. You can pick up orbs to add time on to the bar, and if you get hit time is taken off.
In normal ship mode, you have a life bar, and you can take six or seven hits before you die. You also have a charge bar which fills up quickly over time; when its full you press I + II at the same time to get a traditional bomb-type effect. This is more like a sub-weapon than a bomb though, as it's use is unlimited (the transformation has stocks though, up to three).
The game starts with a nice, albeit short, intro that highlights the characters:

As mentioned above, there are some weaknesses that keep the game from being great. The ships seems kind of slow; in fact, the whole game seems a little slow. THis might be due to the scrolling speed or the occasional lack of enemies. I don't personally mind this cuz i don't need every shooter i play to be Cave-style craziness, but some people might get bored. Some of the BGs can be kind of sparse too, but i dig any game that has a "flying over a city at night" level, which in this case is New Hong Kong (the first level). THe game is pretty easy due to the life bar, sub-weapon, and transformations, but if you die you start at the beginning of a level. This pisses me off sometimes, as the levels (of which there are seven) are looooonnngggg, with two parts to each stage.
However, there are a lot of nice touches:
- There's a two-player mode where, when you transform, both players merge together, with one person shooting forward and one shooting backwards via a crosshairs.
- You can switch characters between stages.
- The enemy sprites are super-detailed and varied, with a sort of mechanized insect vibe, and the bosses are big and cool.
- Once you get to the third stage you can choose your path.
- THe BGM, while not overly memorable, has some nice tracks (i like the second stage particularly).
- THere is some awesome engrish: "YOU SHOOTED THE BOSS".
- With four characters each with a different main shot, sub-weapon, and psychic storm attack, there's a lot of weapon variety.
Overall, it's a game definitely worth buying, especially because it's pretty cheap. Hardcore shooter fans might find it boring or just average, but the small touches make it a game that will get plenty of play.

Got Gates of Thunder from Oldergames, played it today must say i'm very impressed.
Perhaps a little easy, tho i like the fact that power ups are replenished to avoid lewd battles with just a pee shooter.
Certainly shows what the SCD format can do.

Bought a 3.0 card bundle with GOT because I had a friend who got a Duo and let me play it at his house...BLEW ME AWAY. Play it regularly to this day 10+ years later. I'm getting old.

Been playing Spriggan and Nexzr like there is no tomorrow. Nexzr is addictive as hell and also amazingly frustrating at the same time. Spriggan is awesome. My last few nights have consisted entirely of these two games. :buttrock:
Haha, good to see the PCE shooter love here.
I really like Dead Moon for some reason. I'm mostly a horizontal shooter guy and the parallax scrolling in the Moon Stage (Stage 3) is impressive on such old hardware. The game is the right difficulty I think too.
And at first I didn't really like Lords of Thunder, but hell if it isn't one of the best shooters around. Lots of choices for your "ship"/robot/lord and the difficulty is just right. I loved R-Type as a kid, but that game is just ridiculously hard in some places.
And I think Blazing Lazers might very well be the best on the system. Vertical, which normally isn't my thing, but just a beautiful shooter. For some reason the voice samples in that game are really cool to me, if not barely recognizable.
I've tried to get into Download 2 and the cinema screens are great, but I find the gameplay lackluster.

I've always had the love for all domestic Turbo stuff....never stopped playing it since I got my first Turbo CD...once I got Gate of Thunder it was all over. Only recently have I started branching out into imports semi-seriously. Its nice to get that same feeling I got when I played Gate of Thunder all over again.

MUSHA (Metallic Uniframe Super Hybrid Armor) on the Genesis was just the U.S. name for Aleste. There's another game released domestically on the Sega CD (Robo Aleste).
But yeah, there was a samurai game on SNES called Musya.

I really liked dead moon too. It's so damn expensive. I think I like vertical shooters a little better, but not by much. Aero Blasters was kick ass. Blazing Lazers is awesome, and its cheap by comparison. I just recently got Air Zonk, amazing.

Thanks to D-Lite, I've gotten back into the swing of things with the PCE with the purchase of a RX., after selling my stuff off a while ago. Luckily, however, I didnt sell off some of my favorite games such as:
Lords of Thunder. When I first played this game it was incredibly "blah" until I sat down and promised myself to end it before pawning it off. Boy, did my outlook change! I loved the music, visuals, weaving in and out of gunfire to collect the orbs, and, of course, visiting the store to properly equip myself for battle. Choice game!
Star Parodia: Fun, fun, fun game that suffers from a complete lack of difficulty.
Download II: Underrated game with good challenge. Some really trippy backgrounds at times, especially the final one with Hitler and the all of the dead bodies (which I've yet to beat!).

Ture that some times ppl don't give, Lords of Thunder a chance at all.
While the game does get "over hyped" i think any body who's a shooter fan.
Should give it chance at 'least once befor turning it down.
Gameplay+Great Music=Gives a great experince overall :buttrock:

I still think the Saturn is the king of the shooter consoles.
Too many drop-dead amazing arcade ports AND original titles.
Radiant, Sokyou, the Salamander/Gradius/Parodius ports, Sengoku Blade, ThunderForce V/Gold Packs, the mind wobbles.
The PCE and MegaDrive deserve respect, but I think a hardcore shooter fan could own only a JP Saturn and be more than satisfied.
I agree completely, though I may be biased; I've never owned a PC-Engine or TG16. *gasp*

I disagree with what Loopz said.
PC Engine is the king of shooter console.
Look at the following games and you will be the judge:
- Lords of Thunder
- Gate of Thunder
- Air Zonk
- Spriggan 1 & 2 (awesome!!)
- Nexzr
- Rayxanber 2 & 3
- Coryon
- R-Type complete (with intermissions which can't find in other versions)
- Star Soldier
- Dead Moon

I have to agree with Loopz, the Saturn is by far the king of 2D shooters. It has a solid library of classic 90s shooters, like:
Donpachi
DoDonpachi
Batsugun
Shienryu
Battle Garegga
Strikers 1945 I
Strikers 1945 II
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
Cotton
Cotton 2
Blast Wind
Metal Black
Gunbird
Radiant Silvergun
Soukyugurentai
Gekirindan
Guardian Force
The first few games listed alone are worth the price of admission . . .

Can't compare the 2 in my opinion.
Saturn is the king of arcade shooter ports.
PC Engine is the king of console/original shooters.

Actually thats not quite right. I've owned a Turbografx-16 for many years and played many of the shooters on it, still own most of them (including Blazing Lazers, a great shooter). But I never did play a PCE CD title, nor any imports . . . but I doubt many of them can equal the likes of the classic Saturn shooter arcade ports like Donpachi, DoDonpachi, Batsugun, Shienryu, Battle Garegga, Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus, etc. etc.
